We were taught in Advanced Maritime fire fighting, shipboard fires not dealt with in the first 2 minutes usually turn catastrophic.

There's a live feed on this link:

SAN DIEGO (KSWB/WFLA/AP) — At least eighteen sailors are being treated for minor injuries after a fire following an explosion onboard a U.S. Navy ship in San Diego Sunday morning.

The blaze was reported shortly before 9 a.m. on USS Bonhomme Richard, Krishna Jackson, the base’s public information officer told AP officials.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. Jackson told AP that she didn’t know where on the 840-foot (255-meter) amphibious assault vessel the blast and the fire occurred. The ship was undergoing routine maintenance at the time of the fire.

Jackson estimated about 200 sailors and officers were on board — far fewer than if the ship was on active duty.

The entire crew is off the ship and all are accounted for, according to SDFD. More information to follow.

No word yet on the cause of the fire. At least one of the injuries was from an explosion, per SDPD.

Impossible. It was laid in 1995
I stand corrected, he was part of the commissioning team when working at the LBNSY and went to sea on it as a civilian.

Was on that ship during Fleet Week in SF a number of years back. As I recall a good part of the lower deck is all open space. Going to be a big oven.

5 1/2 years aboard a destroyer during the 80's, thank God we never had a fire in the engine room. It would have been a mf'er to fight.

Yep the top looks like an aircraft carrier and the bottom hold looks like this. They can sink the ship down and flood the compartment to drive boats/amphib craft into the back.

The first step we learned when shipboard firefighting is to isolate the space. Electrically, fuel/oil/machinery, and oxygen. Close all the hatches and turn off all the ventilation. If the fire was in that bottom hold, there’s no way to do that. It’ll be interesting to see what caused the fire and also what fueled it.

You can’t batten the hatches when it’s in port for retrofit. They have electric lines and temp plumping running the whole ship.

My brother has been deployed on the sister ship a few times. He confirmed it was a welding incident and not any sort of act.

Wind shifted up from the south last evening into this morning, so north coastal and here in Escondido by 1:30 AM, were experiencing the acrid stench. Breeze shifted to more westerly now, so back at ya Ramona, El Cajon. ;)

We have some friends there from San Bernardino and they said they didn’t notice anything.

This is a video capture from this mornings local CBS broadcast. Appears they've made some great progress since yesterday. 👍 👍 👍
Was able to open windows and cool the house down this morning, couldn't yesterday due to the acrid stench. o_O

I’ll tell ya what..... this will be a huge eye opener to the Navy brass about Survivability of their ships. They will be looking at every single material used in their ships. And fire rating will be scrutinized!!!!!

The US still has the largest Navy in the world. Even without this ship. 💪🏼
