I need something bigger than my 2 door civic for me and my 4 kids. I'm in an odd position. I've always owned old junk that I kept running and working good enough for me. The civic was bought as a commuter for me and its great for that, its also the nicest and newest vehicle that I own now. It was never intended to have 4 kids in it, 2 of them being in car seats still. I have my old square suburban and Ive been making that work for the weekends but I only trust it soo far lol. I have said for a while now that I want to get into a late model suburban, '15-20 would be my choice. Mathematically I can take on a payment for the first time in my life and Ive been looking haphazardly.

This caught my eyes a few weeks ago and really got my gears turning

I am going to have to finance this purchase, no way around that. I bank with Chase, should I consider them for my financing? Local credit union? Whatever financing that the used car lot has? My searching hasnt turned up much at the local dealerships and really when looking it looks pretty slim. Part of this is because I really only want white and 2nd row bench, not buckets. I'm not set on another sub, but they have always worked really well for me, I've owned 3 lol.

Lets hear it! or post up other options. I'm in no rush.

I went through a local credit union when I bought my duramax. I could've paid cash but with a 3% interest rate on the loan, it made sense and it helped out my credit score. Paid the loan off in 1.5 years.

when i bought my truck, i had pre aproval for a certain amount from my credit union, but also checked what they were offering. I was shocked when GM financial offered a better deal so i signed for their financing the rate was the same, but some other incentives were offered if chose their financing. my understanding is they make most of their money of financing.

I'd def shop around on loan rates, not sure where the used loans are at right now. I'd shop the dealers rates, CU rates, and maybe even some oddball internet lenders. You can always refi later, so its not like you're locked in for the entirety of the loan.

I'm in Corona / Riverside if you want me to go over and take a look at the truck and give it a once over.

Echo what everyone has said.

Also, definitely check the carfax. We looked at used Tahoes a while back and one for sure had been in an accident and repainted. Dealer denied, salesman said it doesnt look like it, but I knew. Showed him how I knew, what to look for, etc...Just because it is at a dealer doesn't mean they aren't shady. Also helps with odometer readings, etc.

Never be afraid to haggle. Too many folks I know pay sticker for everything because negotiating makes them nervous. Negotiating is not hard, but it is an art. Either way, do it.

Don't fall in love with the first one you see. Those rims and tires can likely be found/installed for $2-3K. Dont let the dealer bend you over for $5k. Look EVERYWHERE. Offerup, marketplace, etc. There are deals to be had (especially if you aren't in a time crunch).

90K and 29.900

all that info is in their "car story" tab, it took me a while to figure that one out too

Interest rates are still up, my CU is at 6.69 on used. Line up a loan with your bank or credit union, but the dealer may be able to beat it. A few years ago, my CU was 2.49% and the dealer had 0.9% on certified pre owned. Never hurts to ask.
Just make sure payments, months, rate and cost match up.

Shopping rates is pretty much where Im at right now. They have dropped the price since I first saw the add. Im betting they have a hard time moving trucks and suv's with gas prices. If I get more serious eyes on it before I drive out would probably be a good idea! Unless you're bored and like window shopping lol

I hear ya, Im not a fan of those wheels and tires as is and they would likely be swapped out cause I know someone else out there has to have 22"'s, not me.

Be careful reading into the ads these dealers have cars listed for. I was just looking at a 22 Camry, dealer had it listed for 22K . He then goes on to say that's the sales price but we added 7k in extras so the car is actually 30K. I finally just bought new as a new camry is only 4k more than a 21 with 30K on it.

I know a couple families that have a Ford Flex and are very happy with them. Not everyone’s cup-o-tea, but I think they’re a less expensive option for a lot of space.
If shopping at a car lot, get them to give you an “out the door” price BEFORE you start answering the “how much are you going to put down?, Where do you want your monthly payments to be?, are you trading in a vehicle?” There’s some good YT vids out that show common dealer sales tricks and tactics. It would probably be worth your time. Just my .02

It's a fair price based on KBB and what similar vehicles are priced at. Most likely it is becoming an aged inventory unit is why they are pricing a bit low. I'm a GM at a dealership in Az if you have any questions. Like others have said, watch for add ons being "required". You are more likely to get a discount if you use their financing and it most likely will be comparable to your own bank or credit union. Good Luck!

I owned a Flex! Amazing vehicle and if I could buy one new again I just might do it. I also know that the water pump replacement cost 2K, so Id be a little gun-shy buying one used. I havent looked for a used one but they were pretty scarce a while ago too.

I feel like this generation gm suv is fairly solid. The A/C Condenser has a TSB/Recall for a crack that they all get. The touch screen/HMI gets wonky too. Fans stay on sometimes lol. They are a good value now. As stated really look over the body for repaints. So many have been repainted even 5 years back 80% of them on the lots had newly painted panels. My wife had to tell the carmax salesman the silver yukon they had on the lot shouldn't have 6 different shades of paint on it :D

Another concern is paying CA tax buying out of state. How will that work? Living and registering whatever I buy in AZ

If your in the market for a 2014-2020 Suburban (even some of the '21 - '22 Suburbans) - There are 2 items I would be concerned about buying at 90k miles

1) 6 Speed trans - Torque converter failures happen in this mileage range. Some go 150k. Some go 80k. When the converter goes, it takes out the trans and trans case - Big $$$$. Later models may have the 8 speed - these have their own gremlins, stay away from the 8 speed all together.

2) The good-ole AFM lifter failure issue. Again - some go a lifetime with no issues, some die. The chance of them dying is much higher with a vehicle approaching 100k.

Theyre good vehicles overall, but these 2 potential failures would have me looking at an extended warranty.

If it's through a dealer in CA, you're paying tax here and registering in AZ. Best to buy used if your trying to avoid taxes.

I will add to this.
If you are serious about these years look for what called the "max tow package" its not the typical tow package and most dealers sales reps dont know about it. The only way to know it has it is to obviously look up vin but it will have a built in trailer brake controller on the lower left side of the dash.
These subs have lower rearend gears built in brake controller bigger trans pan on top of the typical tow package. Again the sales team will not know what you are talking about LOL

They are not the easiest to find but be patient and one will popup. I waited and waited and for every 30 ads I looked at only 1 would be optioned this way.

Could a 2wd have that tow package or is that reserved for a 4 wheeler? I'll keep my eyes peeled

Beware the FI manager. They will add things like window etching, bump your agreed upon rate up a point, charge for LoJack or whatever phony anti-theft bullshit they add and try to sell you an extended warranty. The last time I bought a car it was price, tax, docs, and smog. Nothing else

Why don’t you get a smaller SUV like your dad has, that seems like it’s big enough for four kids. 🤓

Take a look at truecar.com you can even narrow down your search to include bench seats and the towing package

We could fit in his if a good deal was out there. I wouldn't be happy driving it though to be honest. I'd have to look and see how much room is left over when all the seats are up. Bags and coolers take up space real fast!

I recently bought a new to me 2008 Duramax from Encore Ford in Oxnard. Here's some of the things I learned in preparation for my purchase. Homework is crucial to your success in finding a good vehicle from a money pit and not over paying. Research "buying a used car" online. There's lots of great info., insights and tricks to add to your tool belt arsenal. ( like the video posted above) Being well educated and prepared for the buying process puts you in a much stronger negotiating position and has you feel more at ease and confident when sitting down to negotiate YOUR deal. If possible, do as much of the deal over the internet or phone as you can and then hopefully when you go the stealership you are just signing dox. This can help to have you in a better or more comfortable negotiation position by not feeling pressured or trapped into doing what they want you to. Allows you time and or space to think, reply, or restate your terms for YOUR deal. Ideally, you should have your deal completely worked out prior to beginning the conversation or negotiation. Know exactly what you will or won't do or accept. Be bold and confident in your knowledge, research and value to YOU of the vehicle.
If/when negotiating at the stealership if/when possible bring a friend to support you and your goals. Hopefully you & your wife can make for a strong negotiation team and have a well prepared game plan, and buying strategy before entering the stealership arena. (AKA- cage match haha)
Always Remain MINDFUL......your on their turf, on their home field. Like VEGAS the doors are open and the lights are on because they have their game dialed in and they have the upper hand........but only if you allow them to. You have 1 special power over them though, the power of NO and leaving. If/when you use it do NOT waiver or you will have given it away. How good at chess are you? This is like a chess match...... strategy. Have one and EMPLOY it. As much as possible, and this can be a tough one, remove your emotions from the game. Being too outwardly excited or urgent let's them know how much or badly you want THIS vehicle and they will use it and beat you with it, especially the finance managers. Those guys can be real mother fuckers. If the negotiation isn't going well for you, step away for a moment with or w/o your partner, have a drink, smoke, take a piss whatever. Just get a break to regroup your thoughts, strategy etc. then return to the neg. table if your ready or just leave. (that can be a power ploy too) You can always come back later, another day etc. I've fucked myself a couple times in previous years by not doing this. It's a game so try not to take it personal. If you play it like a game, say tennis, ping pong etc. you can have more fun with it and not have it be as stressful.

Buy a carfax subscription for private party purchases. Note: reporting to carfax is not required so not everything gets reported to them. Verify all maintenance records whenever possible. Vin check every vehicle you're seriously considering. Buy a 1 owner vehicle when possible. Look in to other other states for better deals, Kali is rather expensive as typical. Be very wary of states/regions that have had flooding issues. (texas, florida) Be extra vigilant in those areas.

Not being in a hurry puts you in a advantageous position. You can walk away if they won't work ....your deal.
That's a powerful leverage position to be in on a car purchase. Additionally, it provides you the opportunity of time to get educated and well prepared for the upcoming cage fight. haha
Do everything you can to know everything possible about the vehicle you want and its related options, packages ( towing etc. as mentioned prev.) Know more about the vehicles your interested in then the seller. Know everything about your financial position and financing qualifications. Bring a current copy of your credit report from all 3 agencies so they can't play you for a higher rate then what you actually qualify for and they likely will if possible. STEALERSHIPS are snakes and take pride in "outsmarting you" (aka lying to you) They've earned that derogatory reputation. Read as many reviews as you can for each stealership your considering buying from.
There's so much more to say but I gotta crash. My computer is doing stupid shit and I'm tired of retyping paragraphs. I hope this helps for now.

Look at Certified pre-owned financing. All the manufacturers offer deals just gotta wait for the right one. Last month gmc was offering 3.9% this month Lincoln is offering 4.99%. With used car rates in the 7-8% range on average these financing deals can save you a ton of money.

I see a lot of posts that seem to take the approach that you will be locked in a battle with a car salesman. It does not have to be like this.

I sold cars in 1990 as a 20-year-old and it taught me a ton, but my real negotiation knowledge came from a class my current employer provided to me from Havard.

https://www.pon.harvard.edu/tag/mutual-gain/

No, I did not go to Havard Law School, but I'm very fortunate that my employer provided a private education from top-tier institutions. FWIW you can get a lot of this stuff free or at low costs by searching online or subscribing to Havard Business Review.

I recall Jay (Photoglo) built a pretty solid network selling vehicles on Hotboat and perhaps even here at RDP. I don't have an opinion of him, but he did not build that network by fighting with his customers during the sale.

Used car guys can find just about anything you want if you are willing to wait. I would see if anyone in your network can suggest a good person who works in the business, if not go into the sales process understanding that they need to make a profit, acknowledge that, and set the expectations that you want to buy a great car at a fair price. If it is uncomfortable, it will likely not end with you being happy. In contrast, the longer the sales guy or gal is messing around with you, the less time they have to go work the next lead. Don't waste their time.

Back to the Mutual Gains Approach to Negotiations. I was absolutely crushing the people I had to role-play against when I started the class but was failing the role-play tests because I was taking everything and leaving the other side feeling I cheated them. I had to learn to play the long game and take what was fair and give them the perception they wanted to work with me again so I could continue to build a long-term relationship that would pay dividends and not just settle for the quick short-term win.

If I was in the car business, I would work hard on my referral business.

Hope this added some additional perception to consider. Good Luck.

the finance guy / that little room you sit in with that dirt bag is the worst. when i bought my last truck, i knew the salesguy and told him i will buy from you, but i will not sit in the finance room. he just laughed and said thats fine, i hate him too.

GM V8’s from 14-21 are known for having lifter and camshaft issues because of the active fuel management system. I would check the service records on that vehicle and see if it has had the issue, if so, run away.

I had a 16 Escalade and it ate 2 lifters less than 10K miles apart. It’s a shitty deal when it happens and you end up careless for several days, in my case there was a parts shortage and it took weeks. I picked it up from the dealer after the second failure, drive it to Dodge dealer and traded it in for a new Ram. I lost my ass on that thing and dont think I’ll ever buy another GM as a result.

The “extras” are getting more creative for sure. I haggled with the dealer on my accord for a few weeks. Finally got the number i wanted. Went down with the quote in writing and they sprung the vaunted theft deterrent, ceramic coating and other BS on me. It went from a 1hr deal to over an hour of BS arguing.

@braindead truecar is a new rabbit hole that I haven't been down before! Holy cow there is a lot more out there that I thought. Is it worth setting up an account?

@69hondo found this one with the tow package, not that I think I need it but.......

For the rest, Im reading everything and listening. I dont think Im going to find what Im looking for at manufacture dealership so not sure all applies. I'm assuming Ill find what I want at a independent lot and would think that there would be less haggling, maybe I'm wrong?

Id buy private party as well but don't have that kind of cash. I think someone was selling a sub here 6-9 months ago and timing just wasn't right.

Watch your ram - they are notorious for eating lifters and cams also!

Unfortunately it's an issue with OEM suppliers of lifters - affects everyone who has a cam-in-block designed motor. Even the new Ford 7.3 is seeing lifter failures.

Ho lee fuk, who are some of you buying cars from that yore arguing with sales and finance guys?!

I guess i’m fortunate that every dealer i’ve bought vehicles from was painless. Negotiate beforehand(text, email, phone), Walk in with check, walk out with keys…some even delivered. Yes i’ve known the sales people and owners personally, but i’m in dealerships a lot and never hear yelling and fighting. Lol….and I’m actually texting a sales manager right now about a vehicle :D

A month ago, Schools First offered us 5.25 on new, 5.75 on used, preapproved 60K.

Honda/Acura Finance came it at 3.99 on a 2021 Acura. And I'm still rebuilding my cr5edit after not having any cards/loans, except for the mortgage, for the past 20-years. Score is about 680

They only went $1K less than the Internet price - a couple of other places wouldn't budge on off the Internet price.

Good luck, happy shopping. :)

It's called just as 69hondo said "The MAX" package, comes with over sized oil and trans coolers, larger capacity trans pan, lower rear end gears, all set up for towing.

Usually part of the Denali package in a GMC truck.

FUCK CARFAX ...DO NOT TRUST THEM. DO NOT make any decision based upon their information, if any repair/bodywork was paid for cash, it's not on there.

Are you still in Ventura Warpt? If you find a decent candidate I'd be happy to run down and look at it for ya. HMU.

If it were me, I'd be looking for one that had 70k+ on it with the transmission replaced already and new lifters from an AFM failure. Instantly install a defeat for the AFM, roll on towards happyland!

I was in Solvang 8 years ago, moved to Havasu June of 15. I appreciate the offer though 👍👍

I recall Jay (Photoglo) built a pretty solid network selling vehicles on Hotboat and perhaps even here at RDP. I don't have an opinion of him, but he did not build that network by fighting with his customers during the sale.
Jay is a solid dude. I’ve bought several vehicles from him. Never a surprise or hiccup. He is a straight shooter and makes the process easy. I can buy a 100k truck from Jay and spend a total of 10mins on it.

haha thats no joke

It was the simplest car buying experience of my life. I called him, gave him the run down on the EXACT truck I wanted. He said there were 2 in his network, and could pull the closest one, which was in Bakersfield i think. He had it 2 days later, drove it to my office, I signed the paper work on the hood of the truck. All in all It was under 10m from when he showed up.

We shot the shit about boats for another 20m and he was on his way.

I have no clue if hes even around anymore though

I never bought anything from him, but I have friends who did and they all said the same exact thing. Best buying experience they ever had. He should write a sales book.

Haven’t set up an account. I think the account only gives you access to what dealership is selling the car, but if you look closely at the photos you can figure it out on your own.

I think beyond having his shit together, it was a no BS, legit no haggle deal.

I had been shopping around, I knew the prices, he told me he had the truck, and the price he told me was prob 4-6% lower than the lowest I was able to haggle elsewhere.
