Found a 900 for the kid.
Besides picking up some safety gear (new helmets, comm kits, etc.) and tools, should be god to go.
Already has
1) SuperATV Electric Steering
2) Good enough stereo pods, chase light and front lights
3) Rugged Comms
4) KMS Clutch
5) Shock Therapy Springs

First order of business is picking up a 1k seat base, allowing for some seat adjustments for the kid and wife.
So what else could I invest in.

And with this now in my hands, I will be listing a Kawasaki 90 quad in the next week or so (need to move it from the side garage into the main one to take pics, etc).

Thanks @DesertFam (Jeremy) for making it a super easy transaction. FYI, I left your house at 104 and it was 70 when I got home yesterday evening :). My daughter woke me up via FaceTime at 530 so she could have a walk around. She is super stoked!

I didn't see wrist restraints or nets.

Nice car!

From a 90 quad to a 900rzr 😳
She has been driving my FIL‘s Mule around his ranch all summer and is the only grandkid out of 3 (including her 14yo cousin) that is allowed to drive with grandma. All other kids can only drive with grandpa.

So the options were a 200, 570, 800 or 900. The 900 had the best upside and its a SXS she can use for years. Plus, now the wife thinks I need one as well :)

On the seats for a 900 -

My friend just got the same car for his wife last season.

My friend is normal sized and has a short wife. He ended up setting up one seat for tall people and one for short, and just switches them side to side depending on who is driving. He tried to do the slider thing and it messed up the seat height. I am not 100% sure of what config he tried with the slider.

You may even want a 3rd seat to swap in specifically set up for your daughter.

Heading the direction your friend did.
If the 1k base does not work for the kid, a third seat on a true slider that raises the seat might be purchased.

I envy that coastal weather. I am very glad to hear she is excited! Thanks for making it easy for me too!

This is the route I’ll go with my son when he gets older. I’m not going to do a smaller rzr as they grow out of it very quickly and they don’t do really well compared to the full size ones. 900 will keep up no problem and not beat you to death while doing it. Plus they are damn near bullet proof

How old is the kid?

900 2 seater is still legit fast. Unless we are talking a 13 y/o with some serious seat time or a kid with a bunch of restraint i would be thinking throttle stop.

cool car.

On the list. Looking into electronic solutions that will limit her mph.
She has great throttle control (got that feedback from a buddy who took her out last year in his can am) for an 11, soon to be 12yo. But I want to limit what she can do until she has more seat time.

Throttle stops are great learning tools.

Honestly most of my friends in Havasu are going this same route. We all did the RZR 170 (or in my case ranger 150) route.. then some got the 570 deals… but the kids progress right out of that into a 8-900.. easier to just skip ahead and teach them how to drive and be responsible and respectful of the machine.

I disagree, when you need all the power it’s not there

When they are learning the throttle stop is all the power.. lol. They shouldn’t be learning in conditions where some 10 year old is needing all the hp a 900 offers.. unless the kid has serious offroad time under his belt.

I think it makes sense the 200 is small and pricey and the 570 is probably more costly than a nice used 900.

900 are fast i just don't think a bunch of 11 y/o need 100hp and a machine that does 80 mph.

This.... @Singleton my step daughter who was 12 this past Christmas got intro'd to sleds... I throttle blocked (using rubber shims and a hose clamp) the Indy 500 ( https://snowmobiles.polaris.com/en-us/indy/indy-evo/ ) to let her hit about 15-20mph at most for the first 10 days or so 2-3 hrs a day riding...I pulled the stop after she got used to the track at the cabin and some time on the road to it. Took her to the trails and she was fine at that point...but only because we limited her from the beginning to figure out how it would react. It will run 50mph...and knowing her she would have pinned it and got hurt quick.

Yes. It’s very easy to mechanically limit the throttle pedal on the 900.. or limit clutch travel if you want to limit top end.

A 570, 800 or 900 will cruise around with a modern car no problem. A 170 or 200 can’t.

never really understood the 170. they have zero suspension and are slow. more a over priced novelty.

800's were ok and would be a good medium car. 900's were the game changer and smoked 800's.

With that said i have a good friend that has like 3 completely raced out 170's with all the goodies to compete in a series. if someone is racing them and needs a new car or wants to race this would be cheaper than starting new. (not cheap)

Forgot to post this.
200 - new or used we’re going for 6k
570 - found a few, but those folks wanted anywhere from 5 to 8
800 - the ones I found were beat, and folks wanted 6-9

I found a very clean 900 (couple minor issues) and the price was right.
I would rather train my daughter how to drive then upgrade in a few years

1 big reason I'm buying a 900/1000 for my son is that I hate moving the seats and having to adjust belts between my kids taking turns driving 1 vehicle. I can't imagine swapping the complete seats and having to put belts through seats every time literally 10 times a day.

So he doesn't get to drive until 10+ when he can handle a 900? The little ones have been great for our son from 5-10 and my daughter is just 8 and loving her rzr

We ride with my friends 9yo girl and 11 yo boy who have graduated to a 1000cc Textron 2 seater and they each cruise around conservatively fine. Yes, they have more seat time than most but the progressive learning from the 170 to 570 is the big help.
@Singleton Your daughter will do great, just take her out to our place where it’s nice and soft and she can safely test the limits. I don’t think she needs to have it limited.

The 170's are just super beefy reliable go-carts that are worth the costs just for "smiles per mile" for kids around camp.
The 200's are hugely different on suspension and power. The 200s are 4 corner upper/lower a-arms like the original rzr 800 or 800s. You could put $5k into a 170 and still not be at the 200 capability with only an ecu tune. Our 170 went around the desert at 23-25 mph with the back end hopping and my 7 year old daughter can cruise at 35-38 through the chatter bumps in her 200.

and bought the 900 which was a "game changer"😄 Amazing how far they have come in 10 years. When I drive our old 07 Rhino around camp I REALLY appreciate the advancement in technology.

You make a valid point on letting him drive nowish. But it’s huge commitment and what not as you are aware. Maybe I’ll pick up my friends 570 when he is done with it in a year or two. We will see.

But I plan to get him into a 900 asap

Well the older 900 seats don’t have pass throughs.

If you had seats with pass throughs (way safer) I would just do clip in harnesses. You could swap seats and harnesses in 1 minute.

If I ever do another custom cage on a SXS it’s going to be set up for all clip in harnesses.

Clips in are soo nice. I have it on my current rzr and taking seats in and out is a breeze now

I had a 350cc quad when I was 12.. 250x when I was like 8’ish?
I learned to ride my dads 1977 yz400 at 13 (93’) I couldn’t stop without falling over unless I rolled up and stopped leaning against the outhouse or a trailer👍🏻 My dad thought buying a 125cc dirtbike was lame in the desert so I went straight to an old ‘81 YZ250 at 13/14 when 1 of my tippy toes could touch the ground. I didn’t even have the strength to pick that bike up when I fell and balancing to start it was a mission. Again, leaning against the outhouse was my trick👍🏻
Thanks Dad❤️

seatbelts with clips would make a lot of sense . I wasn’t thinking stock seats, that’s the first thing I change but the aftermarket seats never work as smooth on the stock sliders and are much more bulky to tetris in and out. Aces seats are 1/3 $ of PRP seats and basically the same construction. They bolted to the stock rails while PRP you would have to use their non-adjustable bases. The kids seats in our RZR were $379 for the set. We need a slightly bigger midsize version which Aces doesn’t make and they are $600+ each at PRP.

And she is off. Finally found time to get her out in the dirt.
By the end of the weekend she was doing laps on her own and understood how to use comms.

special thanks to @Deckin Around and his wife for allowing us to camp on his land.

On the safety equipment list, those will be install in the passenger seat.
I fully suggest a wrist restraint for the driver left hand and pass right hand. It takes a sec to get comfortable with but 100 worth specially with a young driver.

Great Thread!

I think it’s great to get the kids started as young as possible!
It will help them develop some skills and when they actually get a drivers lic they will be a pro! Way less chance of a serious accident on the roadways
