So awhile back I wrote an article calling out to the manufacturers that we never hear from. A few of them got in touch with us to let us know what they are up to, and what they have been doing!

The first of those manufacturers is Ultra Custom Boats, and I think when you read what I'm going to tell you at the end of the article you'll agree with my sentiment that "they won't be able to build them fast enough."

The purchase of Ultra Custom Boats from John West to Rusty was completed in October of 2013. It should be noted that John is still working with Rusty closely in many facets of the business from some sales, to gel designs, and even boat designs going forward into the future. Rusty has historically been more behind the scenes in the marine industry owning Adrenaline Boats. Adrenaline Boats was founded in 1997 and they specialized in "wholesale" rigging to the manufacturers and annual service and repairs to the public. Adrenaline handled over flow work over the years for Ultra, Eliminator, Commander, and all of Domin8tors rigging up until 2008. Adrenaline Boats is still currently an active business servicing and repairing boats out of the same facility.

After the purchase Ultra's new home is right here in Lake Havasu City Arizona at 690 London Bridge Rd, and they are already in full production! With the new location they secured a new and exclusive dealer Horizon Motorsports! This allows Rusty to concentrate on the builds, and sales will be handled by Preston, Mike, and Paul over at Horizon right down the street.

Both of these 21 Stealth's are out of the mold and will either be built as Stock boats for Horizon Motorsports or sold as Customs if someone comes in and picks Power and Options. (Included the inside shots so you can see the build quality)

This 28 Deck is being rigged with Twins!! I am extremely anxious to see the progression / build on this boat!

So here's the "Hitter" as I mentioned earlier in the article. I don't have price lists on all the different models with power packages (yet). I do know this particular 21 Stealth with a 350/Bravo was built as a stock boat and sold for low 40's. That's with everything, 350/Bravo, Tandem Extreme, Stainless Bimini, Custom Boat Cover, Electric hatch, Billet Everything, Nice Gauges, Custom Steering Wheel, Nice Stereo with a Sub, Stainless Prop, every single option I could think of off the top of my head.

I don't know how many they are going to build at that price point, but it would be exceptionally hard to argue in the custom boat world that you are going to find a bigger bang for the buck, then a 58mph custom boat in the low 40's with all the bells and whistles. This brings it back to affordable boating, and if they keep around those numbers than I would say "they won't be able to build them fast enough."

Nice! You're right...at that price point it will be hard to build them fast enough. 58mph with a 350?
I need to change my prop!

I agree. That is a lot of brand new boat at a price point that will have people really thinking.

If they can keep that price point I see them selling a lot of them.

I am working on getting a price list from Preston tomorrow for more "exact" prices on various models with Base Power and 1 upgraded power.

Again, I'm not 100% sure that they will be selling these at that price point, but I happen to know this one sold for that so it stands to reason that's about what they'll be. Great Value, and anybody with a job can finance one for a couple hundred a month.

That's a lot of boat for the pricing. Hopefully they don't price themselves out of the game and can keep it affordable.

Did Rusty also get the 21' & 23' Shadow Deck's? Or did they stay with John D?

The Stealth at that price point and that highly optioned is unbeatable. Always have been a fan of the Ultra brand.

Pricing staying reasonable. Of course mine is an 04 but I got a great price on it. Especially compared to what else was out there and what it all came with. I think the only thing not part of the standard package was the coast guard kit which makes sense as some people already have boats and keep that stuff.

I'm not sure.. I will find out. I am inclined to say he has all the models.

Who has the 18' shadow molds?

That's the old Cheyenne I believe and e ticket is laying them up for someone? I could be wrong in that, as I'm not super in the know on the small jet boat scene.

My opinion as someone fond of the Ultra brand and their products.

The good news for boat manufactures is that the used boat market is starting to dry up on inventory. A few years ago when the housing boom corrected itself used performance boats were everywhere and they were cheap. I've noticed in the last couple of years that has changed. How can I say this? Because I'm a Boattrader/Powerboatlistings/Craigslist junky and have seen a lot of Ultra boats on the west coast sell or be sold. That being said there seems to be a shortage in the used market on two boats in the Ultra lineup that I believe would sell as new boats.

1- 21' Shadow Deck boat. In the used market they are expensive, because they are rare. I can't believe how much guys ask for these boats, used. 40-50k But, you can't even find them. People like these boats in the lower river and I think it would be worthwhile building these for stock. You wouldn't be stuck with them. In fact, I don't think there is a single 21 Shadow Deck boat for sale currently. There are several 21 and 22 Stealth's.

2- 23' Shadow Deck boat. I see threads in PB and RDP about guys looking to buy a 23' Shadow, again, there just aren't that many of them. They fit a niche, a small deck boat that can run in Havasu.

The 23 Shadow mold is at the shop in Havasu. I was there last week dropping my boat at BCM and now Rusty has it to do some gel stuff.

John D's 22' (or is it a 23'?) deck that he keeps at Lost Lake is my absolute favorite boat. Beautiful. I've always loved the Ultra lineup!:thumbsup

I'd like to see a 21 stealth with a LS based turbo small block. I guess heat would be the issue.

Never been in one that's why I was asking you! Lol

:D I had a long phone conversation with John West about a 23' I wanted to buy. He said they are a blast to drive. Not so much a weekend Havasu boat, but a great river boat. I like them.. Nordic was smart by building a smaller deck boat. I feel that more people are looking for that style of boat i.e. easy front access and cat performance but not too big in length.

I have ridden and driven in a few 23's. Great river or midweek boat, but NOT a Havasu weekend boat! They accelerate hard with the 496mag and HO.

I heard the same thing...not a rough water boat because of the small tunnels or something.

I have always loved the 23' deck

John's is a 23'. I rode in it when it had big power and it's really nice. Really the ultimate cruiser/sleeper.

The real deal is the twin turbo 21' shadow deck I took a demo ride in. Unreal performance that rode like a tunnel but had seating/storage for quite a few adults. Acceleration was impressive.

A 23' with an HO/Outdrive combo is really the best of all worlds for my family and would be perfect on the strip just about any average weekend. You can wakeboard, cruise, hot lap, etc...

If Rusty has the molds to either one I might be making a phone call to the shop.

Great article RD. Keep this stuff coming.

Yes, the 23 and 21 Shadow molds are in Havasu. We just pulled a 23 and another is going in the mold this week. One of them is getting a set back jet with the LSA package.
Also, have a 21 Shadow cat (TPR) going in the mold next week.

That particular mold went to phoenix.

The mold that e ticket is using is the original Cheyenne mold from Arkansas Ervin Capps. Andy Ralls from Ralls Precision Marine owns the mold now. Great guys laying up some really nice pieces.

Pretty Cool write up...

I was heading down London Bridge Rd on to the City Operations Facility to see a friend of mine and I saw the Ultra sign. I was wondering what was going on there. Thanks for the info....

Dave, nice write up - great to see the guys building these days getting some coverage / exposure. Also great job on the follow up with pricing.

I might suggest to Preston to rethink calling that 28 deck an Ultra - I have looked at it now for over a year and it is just not growing on me as an Ultra. The lines of Ultras are all from the same gene pool - its clear that boat is not. Im not saying its a bad boat or anything like that - I just am not feeling the leverage they are trying to get with the Ultra name. I think they would be better served calling that boat something else and using it as the base for another line to grow into in the future...
