Anybody used the app?

It's a way to rent privately owned cars. We are planning spring break and of course, rental cars at the destination have prices higher than giraffe nookie.

Turo shows cars in the area for a fraction of the cost but I've never done a private rental before. And these don't look like jalopies. One guy has a small fleet of lux sedans and SUVs.

If you can't find one available there, Craigslist has folks doing the same thing.

Honolulu has an app called HUI that rents only Toyotas. All app driven too, pretty slick. You never get keys. Use the phone to unlock the car and lock it again.

nice to hear, i've held back a few times since i was unsure.

My biggest concerns are just around putting all of my eggs in one basic. Reserving someones car, flying somewhere, landing, only to find out their uncle had to borrow it and now i'm shit out of luck and have to pay 3x the cost to go rent some shit box Kia. At least if Enterprise or Fox fucks up they have a fleet of potential options

All good experiences except one, which the owner made up for.

In Florida for a portion of our honeymoon and I had rented a corvette on Turo to drive to the keys. 2 days before, the guy says it's unavailable because it got flooded. Flooded? He did Turo as a business, so he offered me other available cars. I took a convertible Camaro SS. When I picked it up... it was straight piped after the cats. I was happy 👍

i always book a backup car rental everywhere I travel cause they don'[t charge you if you don't show up.. I flew into Greensboro in July got there at some god aweful hour and the car rental place was just about out of cars. I did that HUI rental on Oahu which worked out okay but I think it was about $120 when i kept the car all day, the self park at my hotel was like $50 a day so it would have been close to a grand for the week to have my own rental car.

I've always wanted to try Turo to rent some fun cars but havent done it yet

I do a considerable amount of work for Turo. I use them all of the time. If you book with and All Star Host you are ahead of the game.

I've always wanted to try them. Thought if I ever get another window tint ticket that I would rent a similar car and switch license plates to get it signed off by the popo. :)

We use it too. Most recently was in Breckinridge,CO. We rented a Porsche Panamera. We’ve also rented Jags and BMW’s. It’s been a lot more convenient than rental car companies and better priced too.

So insurance question, does your credit card rental car insurance work at these services too?

From what I can find, no, at least none of the CC I have in my wallet.

Got ya, so that’s something worth noting.

I rarely get the additional rental insurance normally, unless I know there’s a decent chance shit might happen.

Just an additional cost to consider

I've also heard some interesting things from a friend who is an owner of rental vehicles. He had rented out one of his vehicles here in L.A. and that vehicle was then listed for sale by the renter. When the uneducated purchaser laid down the cash to buy their "New" vehicle from the fraudulent owner, they later realized they got screwed out of a large sum of cash. They tried to register the vehicle the following day and that was when they realized the seller wasn't actually the owner of the vehicle.

Long story short, the owner of the Turo vehicles later got their vehicle back, the purchaser was out a large sum of cash and the POS thief made out like a bandit.

Welcome to L.A!

Backlash, these are some of the assignments that I get. I have three retired PD detectives working for me. It is not unique the rental car industry. A crook rents a nice car, in LA Lexus RX 350/450 is popular. Then sells it to someone on CL with a fake title, usually very fake. The purchaser fails to look closely, or meet the seller at DMV or AAA, and they are out ALL the $$$. In November we had a purchaser buy a Raptor on a deal too good to be true, often the case. He is out $$$. On an RX case last year, an outstanding LAPD detective ID the suspect, BF of the renter, imagine that. Scams are non-stop in LA, it never ends. Most common cars to sell are Escalade, RX Lexus, new Bronco, Wranglers/Gladators rented and driven to Mexico and returned VIN switched, sold on a real CA title. Buyer beware.

I could write a novel on this stuff.

Does the renter use a fake ID typically when renting or how do they cover up their identity as the one who committed the fraud?

At times fake ID, in other cases not. In the end we and LE solve most of them.
The incident I mentioned was an LASD caper and they solved it rather quickly. I believe it was the Norwalk Station deputies who were working that case, but I can't be positive. On a side note to these types of incidents, how does it work?

Scenario.

The vehicle is rented, then listed for sale. The unsuspecting buyer "Buys" the vehicle, but actually cant own the vehicle because the seller is simply the renter. They dont have a real title, and therefore cannot register the vehicle. The buyer is out the money, the actual owner of the vehicle recovers their vehicle and the renter/seller essentially scores the cash and walks. They are later arrested for financial crimes and hopefully prosecuted.

My question is this.

When the true owner of the vehicle realizes their vehicle is mixed up in this financial mess, they report the vehicle "Stolen." The Norwalk deputies in my example, then "Recover" the stolen vehicle. Since the vehicle has been reported as stolen and then recovered, does the title automatically become a "Salvage title?" I'm curious if this is the case with the title when a vehicle is involved in this type of incident.

@boatpi can you shed some light on this title topic??

Well, kind of going through an old thread as I was an advocate for Turo I am now on the other side of the fence! Recently rented a vehicle through Turo and then had a false claim filed against me without any documentation on my side to prove otherwise, so I am Guilty, even though I did not create the damage

My last Turo I was got charged 150 after the fact for 2-3 dog hairs, even though I clicked to pay the extra pet fee on booking. When I re-pulled the invoice, the pet fee was not on it, so I got fucked for the 150 cleaning fee. The pet surcharge was 25. Just like VRBO, they got too greedy with the fees. Now Turo is about the same as the rental agencies.

Yes this guy got me for $1500 and turo was completely on his side just because he had pictures of the inside of bent wheel several days after returning the vehicle and furthermore took down my review because it was in “retaliation” since the review was posted after he submitted a claim against me.

I was strong and learned to anyone renting a car like I have done for a number of years to take photos of the car all the way around even with major rental car copies like enterprise they usually have a sheet they give you and you do a self inspection, but taking photos is the best

This^^^^ I also make a point of getting the rental agent in the photo as well whenever possible. I detail photo on p/u & drop off, vehicle idleing, especially the dash showing mileage, fuel, etc. Helps to keep everybody honest...
I've never had a problem so far...

I love TURO. I usually search for a car with unlimited miles.

We rented a car for 9 days and put like 2800 miles on it. I think it was like 850 with all the fees

We have considered using Turo but after reading this thread we are going to stick with Enterprise.

My son rented a Turo when rental cars were in short supply on Hawaii in 2021.
I thought having a locally plated car removes some of the targeted thievery.

Since I posted this thread I've rented from Turo almost exclusively. Still save a little even with some of the fees because I don't pay the airport taxes. But it probably isn't the deal it was a couple years ago.

Sucks that some dickhead owner screwed someone over though, I can see how that would turn a guy off to using the service.

I'll still use them in the future, it's better than waiting in line at the rental counter. Better choice of cars, I've rented a Boxster and a lifted Wrangler before. Only got hosed the one time, I'll be more careful in the future.
