I want to add "runway lighting on my boat trailer. What is the law on color for this? The lights will be on all the time while towing like underlighting. Can they all be red or amber or should they be all white?

Are you going to do 2 rows or one down the middle?

I’m not sure what I want….

I'm sure red is a no-go, like blue, but I'll be using red lighting anyways on my trailer when I get to that point. 👍

Ca law requires all solid state lights to the rear be red (sans backup white lights when reversible or amber lights for signals) and all light facing forward to be white or amber. So technically if you had white running lights that could be seen from the rear it’s a fix it ticket. But I doubt you’d ever get stopped if it’s tastefully done. Colored lights aren’t allowed at all. Like green or blue etc.

I’d say do your thing. I would. Lol

I want to do two rows, lights on the rails facing inward. Since there are marker lights on the fenders I would drill a hole on the inside of the rail and add a light.

I do not want to deal with a switch (I'm a lazy inmate)....

I love mine and helps a ton at night getting on trailer. We have a cat and the bunks are super tight to sponsons.

Word of advice, launch the boat and drill holes in the parking lot. You can wire anytime after.

Do you have the lights picked out yet?

surface mount type or drill a 3/4 hole round button type something like this

ours are all white and we love it...there is one problem though....we have a 28 cat and as you get closer to the trailer you cant see the ffing lights anymore from the driver seats lol....we need to add more and possibly add them to our ladder which sits in the middle of the sponsons......think this out before you start drilling holes....also will admit that pops and I are horrible boat captains. great drivers on land horrible on water.

Here is what i did on my bass boat.

Take those fugly grommets that look like they belong on a freight liner off and drill a 5/8 hole not a 3/4. You barely notice them during the day. At night lit up with out the grommets they light the inside also.

I did what you are thinking. I tapped into the 4 side marker lights on the trailer, and put little white LEDs on the inside rail. It works good. I wish I had some more (triple axle trailer) but I'm too lazy to run wires for more.

I'm doing this on my trailer now. Extreme Trailers wires clear (white) lights with the running lights so they are on any time the running lights are on. I decided that I wanted them on my trailer too late when ordering it, so now I'm drilling holes and adding them. I said F it and got green LED's so we will see how it plays out with LEOs. I don't tow at night often, but it will look cool when we do LOL!

How is it driving at night?
perfectly normal. I will say that we only have to drive i think 2 miles from ramp to garage tho. But truthfully do not see much difference. Will be in havasu next weekend and will take pics for you.

Red on the left bunk and blue on right bunk with 2 different strobes
green on the curb side... red on the street side. :)

you know... just incase some one drove the trailer in rather than backing in. it will keep you from prop dinging that f-one-fiddy hood.

may also come in handy after a few cold ones. match up the colors and let er rip.

I always thought a hi pressure bilge pump and a couple nozzles at the fenders would be the trick. Two mini fountains to drive between. Then the next guy will figure out the colored lights in the fountains. vegas style.

I added white ones to our trailer build when we built our boat. They are nice at night but useless in the day. Definitely a must at night with a black trailer. I don’t don’t think mine are nearly as bright as yours, but it was also only a $100 add on to the trailer build I think. I would like much brighter lights with a switch.
