Long story short...bought a used boat and trailer recently and the former owner did not have trailer title. Was a able to get boat xferred and registered in AZ. Thought I would try it for the trailer with a bill of sale but AZ said you need title.

Long story longer the boat/trailer was owned by late father of the seller. So the seller had xfer paperwork from DMV with death cert but nothing about the trailer. Asked seller to go to DMV to get title on trailer and then xfer it from his father to him and then sign off to me. He went to DMV and found the trailer had never been titled and the license plate that is on there is assigned to another vin. DMV is telling him to take trailer to CHP to have them do a Vin verification to see if and who is attached to try and get it transferred.

Anybody with experience on getting a trailer without title registered at this point I don't care which state it is registered in but I just want to follow the steps to get registered to me...

Should have known better even with the hurdles the seller is more than standup...just has not gotten through cleaning up his late father's affairs but is trying to help. It sounds like his father bought the boat from someone else and never took title or registered the trailer...the vin for the trailer has never registered in CA.

I did a car with a similar situation and had to get a bond in order for them to register/title it. Wasn't too bad

I had a similar deal with our Cheetah from a member here who never got it taken care of. It ended up having a lean on the trailer title, but not on the boat itself when it was originally paid off. It took me over a year back and forth with him, with no help, ended up having to get a bonded title from the state of AZ. That worked

Spent an hour at needles CA DMV this morning trying to get title for my Miller trailer that I’ve owned for 13 years.
Boat was no problem. I had the title and reg for it.
All I had for the trailer was the PTI plate that came on it.
I SWEAR I had the title and reg for the trailer, but could not find it anywhere.
So AZ dmv told me go to Needles and get the replacement title. Ok, no problem.
I took that old plate there and they did a search and guess what? She says “that’s not your trailer”...
Well I beg to differ and my boats been sitting on it for 13 years.
I couldn’t find the vin number anywhere on the trailer, and I’ve had a bunch of boats and trailers in the mean time so I wasn’t 100% sure the plate was the right one off the Miller trailer because it hasn’t actually been attached since I bought it. (It got tore off at the ramp first day)

So I ask her if the vin number she’s looking at on her computer says “MIL” anywhere in it. She says yes it does, so I know it’s the right plate and trailer vin.
I sign an affidavit stating that I never got title when I bought it in ‘06.
She looked at all the boat paperwork I had with me and was satisfied that the trailer “matched” the boat I guess.
So I stated the value at $200, used the purchase date on the boat paperwork as the trailer purchase date, and paid back fees of $55 and title will be mailed in 2-6 weeks.
Then I’ll take that to AZ MVD and get it plated.

I’ve been through this whole PTI paperless title BS more than once with boats in CA.
Lesson here is ALWAYS GET PAPER TITLE for your trailer in CA.
They say you can transfer to new owners and other states without it, but I’ve NEVER been able to do it and boats I’ve sold to people in other States have ALWAYS been a god damn nightmare concerning the trailer.

Years ago and 4 boats ago I had to have original owner complete duplicate title form from CA as he had misplaced original. I want to say I was able to take that to AZ DMV and register trailer in my name as he signed off the duplicate title as sold....Sometimes I fee like Parker MVD just takes your money and gives you what you need!!!

Option 2...…..I have heard grinding off vin, paint trailer, add some diamondplate and call it homemade!!!

I would forewarn anyone thinking of grinding removing a Vin number from the trailer.

if a sharp Police detective sees that they will seize that trailer it will be taken to a court hearing and crushed you will never see it again.

I just go to AZ MVD and do an abandoned vehicle. Takes about 4-5 months and cost about $25.
Not a lot of hoops to jump through.

Appreciate all the feedback....what I was worried about...out of all the responses seems like every different one had a different way they went about it...so will likely not be straight forward...

Just reviving an old thread.

I have a chance to pick up a 1972 Ford Ranchero. The storage yard owner just got the lien paperwork from CA DMV. it's got about $900 in back fee's. Reading through this thread, it doesn't sound the same, but wondering if anyone has taken a CA liened vehicle to AZ to reg it?

Thanks, NT

Did you get a title with from the lein? Az doesn't care about the back fees.

What you need is a '73 Gran Torino to go with your Ranchero! and I just happen to have one. :)

No, CA Lien comes with the paperwork from CA DMV to start the title process. I called AZ MVD, they won't accept the CA Lien paperwork. That was the route I am trying to take to lose the back fees.

Does getting a title require you to register the vehicle for road use at that time? It shouldn't be required.

Can you register it as a home built?

Long time ago I acquired a dirt bike trailer.

No plates or vin.

I painted it put new lights and used those receipts to show I put money into the thing.

They did an inspection at the DMV and gave me plates and paperwork.

I don't think I can claim it as homebuilt. DMV isn't that dumb.

It was not required when I filed for title on a Pantera I had purchased that did not have a title. I used a registration service. Each car could be different but not necessarily so, Anytime I had issues with the dmv or aaa I would go to a different window or go to a different location.

I have done that before, but the vehicle wasn't in the system. This one just cleared the Lien with DMV. It's going to be in their system. to be sure; I went to my favorite registration service, They checked, and its in the DMV system & Gruesome Newsom wants his cash.

Jumping in here, my trailer title is Arizona. The previous owner did not get it notarized, but signed.

Am I screwed to register it in AZ without Notary? They are california residents also.
