Trailer took a bit of a beating this year in a few spots. All fresh water use but there is some surface rust.

Ive used duplicator lacquer in the past but it wasn't on rust spots. How do I prep this? I imagine wire off the rust then use a metal/rust primer?

What say ye?

With other stuff, I sand out to clean metal, then use POR15 or the like, then prime, wet sand, color and wet sand (or not if the surrounding has "orange peel") Never done a boat trailer though.

Duplicolor sucks. I touch mine up with rust oleum. I found a color that’s a little bit lighter blue. Then I got some black. Color matched it and made up a container for trailer. If you know where the touchups are, you can find them. Otherwise, you can’t tell.
Edit, I’ve been told that you can get rust oleum color matched.

What’s the prep like?

I’m a big fan of Rustoleum paints. Prep depends on how rusty the area you’re touching up is. If you sand to clean metal then just use there regular primer. If the area is just lightly rusted use there rusty metal primer.
One more little tip. Adding a small amount of PPG polyurethane hardener to the finish coat will give you a super smooth and tough as nails finish.

I use both Duplicolor and Rustoleum

Duplicolor of the outer exposed areas. Got to prep sand smooth and get the rust off first.

Duplicolor matches the Extreme white really well. Their sandable primer fills small imperfections. Lays down nicely, quick drying time and very easy to work with. Topped of with their clear.

Rustoleum white on the axles and springs. I no longer have the drive or energy to get down there and sand to perfection. Always a bunch of rust dust on the springs and minor rock chips on the axles. Requires a very basic and crude yearly touchup.

That's why I used the duplicolor lacquer, it matched the extreme white almost perfectly.
