wifes 4 runner needs new rubber. considering trying the toyo open country AT vs the timeless bfg AT.

been happy with BFG but seems like the mileage out of them isnt what it used t be. hearing good things about the toyo's. anyone run them?

You should also consider the Falken Wildpeaks…

I love those tires. Aggressive enough, last a very long time, and no road noise. Toyo & BFG’s start out fairly quiet, but as they wear, they get louder and louder…. Which is why I got rid of the Toyos about a 2 months ago…

Falkens are my first choice. I get about 50k-55k miles on a set…

You are going to get many opinions and there are many variables to everyones mileage claim like weight of vehicle, load range of tire, size of tire, use like street vs offroad, and roation.

Ill give my experiences with the toyos.

2008 chevy diesel 2500
35x12.5-20 load E
1 set of toyo at 1st generation. 75k miles
2 sets of toyo at2s each changed at 80k miles

Every oil change was cross rotation and proper air pressure. Mostly freeway mixed with towing boat, small trailers and dirtbikes. Tires we not at wear bars when i changed them.

Hummer h3 alpha v8 full time awd,
had stock size toyo at2s put 65k on them until sold probably had 20k miles left on them.

Bfg ats in 2005
2000 f250 v10
37x12.5-18s best we got was 40k miles for some reason. On 2 sets, first set my dad was able to get a prorated warranty on them with his connections and second set made it 50k ish miles until wear bars.

Wild peaks from falken are a good choice as well.

Also look at ironman all country at. Not as aggressive looking but They are a division of Hercules tires which makes amazing trailer tires.

A buddy is an affiliate with kanati tires and they have been awesome on his jeep builds he says

I run TOYO RT's on my 3500. I really like the ride. Been Using them since 16. Mileage has seemed to varied. Last set i got 45,000 miles and i have about 20-30% left when i took them off. Decided to change wheels and get new tires, and sell while i still had some life. Obviously went with another set of RT's

Toyo's are better to get a lot of mileage out of the tire...35-60k miles is not unheard of. BFG is better in off-road performance in my estimation. Wildpeaks are pretty good off-road too.

Toyo AT3's have a 50k Mileage warranty, Falkens new AT4's went to 65k and I believe most sizes even have road hazard.

I've had both and was a die-hard BFG guy for 20+ years, but they changed something along the way, and I wasn't getting consistent wear any longer, and the customer service/warranty folks were less than helpful. The last several sets of tires have been Toyo's and have been really good. It is not the quietest tire, but it is durable and long-lasting.

I even switched from Michelin to Toyos on my motorhome (22.5s) and have been really impressed.

No. Not on a 4Runner at least. The Falken Wildpeaks do exactly what you describe.. they ride rougher and get louder as whey wear. Expect no more than 40K miles out of them.

I've had 5 sets of them (past and current gen Wildpeaks) on 2 different 4 Runners. They all did exactly the same thing, like clockwork. I love the look of them, I was just disappointed and stuck with a loud, rough riding tire after 30K miles each time.

I switched to Nitto Terra Grappler G2s this last time. They are gonna last about 45K miles (a couple more months), are slightly louder than they were new but still ride well.

Great suggestion to replace the BFGs on my Raptor I've found start getting increasingly noisy with each successive rotation after about 25K. I've never made it to 30K, despite plenty of tread depth remaining simply due to the noise factor.

I see these Falken Wildpeaks A/T3W come in an OEM size and load rating for the Raptor. 👍

Wow…. You have the exact opposite experience that me…
I have been running the Wildpeaks for many many years, and have yet to find a quieter aggressive tire. I have been thru lots of sets, along with my son, all go 50,000 miles. But we tow lighter loads more frequently than heavier loads. So that may be the reason.

Bought my 2016 GMC DMax 2500 4x4 used 9 months ago ish, and it had the Toyo Open Countrys. They only had 15,000 miles on them when I bougth the truck. Those where loud as fuck…. I just swapped them out…. I had to use the General Grabbers ATX, because I couldnt get Falken Wildpeaks in a timely manner. I was installing new rim/tires, had the former wheels tires sold to a buddy who needed them asap… so I didn’t have the luxury of waiting for Falkens to get delivered.

I would say the General Grabbers are slightly quieter as the Toyos, but they are brand new… I dont know if they will get louder as they where. Its my first set. Wish I had the time to wait for the Falkens.

I will not buy BFGs, due to past experience of be very very loud.

If you have time they are discontinuing the AT3 so I wouldn't buy those if someone happens to have them in stock, wait for the size to come out in the AT4's, it may be next month but not sure. When I look up the size none of our suppliers has either model right now.

I agree with that completely...That is a great tire and rides way better, and lasts longer than BFG/Toyo in my opinion. @RVRKID is who I get mine from.

I have plenty of time, my current BFGs are fine, just paying attention to a possible future replacement. Unlike many RDPers I don't require a higher load rating and would prefer to stay with the OEM "C" rating for ride comfort. Seems once I get into other brands I'm limited to D & E ratings.

Thanks for the head's up !!!

It might just be that tire, combined with 4runner. On something else they may be just fine. I would be willing to try them on another truck sometime.

I really liked everything about the tire for 30K miles. The last 10K, they just kind of degraded. FWIW, I run the Nittos on the 4Runner now because I had such a great experience with them on my F150. I got over 70K miles out of them, they were smooth and quiet as they wore out.
The 4runner has chewed them up in about 42K miles. I will say that even my wife noticed that they are quieter and smoother than the Falkens at the end of their life.

I have same Toyos on the truck now, and are liking them too. They are made by the same people that make the Nittos.

Hope this doesn't sound to karen or ghay or both.

I have been a bfg die hard for way over 36 years, run them dam near on everything I own.

However lately I must admit the mileage seems to be lacking, the price is outrageous, and this last part might not be of value to anyone, merely my observation.

...the newer k2's, fuck they pick up every dam pebble, gravel, little dirt clog into the treads and then either stay in the tread forever or throw them at my boat, or jet skii trailer or flat bed or travel trailer, etc. Or the person behind me, not wanting to be that gravel shooting dick. If I owned some crazy nice boat, well it would piss me off to no end to have my tow rig shooting bullets at my boat. Next round I might have to step off the bfg train and opt for an alternative tire.

End rant.

We are running Hercules tires on most of our trucks, and all of our trailers up here on the ranch. I just put the Terra Tracs A/T's on my F350 and absolutely love them. 60000 mile wear out warranty and nice and quiet on the highway. They do very well in the snow and ice as well. I have been a loyal BFG fan for thirty years.

I might give those a try. Name brand tires are getting stupidly expensive.

So I have used Toyo’s for years. My Silverado 1/2 ton is on its 4th set. I get constant even wear, little to no noise. The AT2 was a great tire, but was not the best in the rain. Then they came out with the AT3, which is much better in the rain, but is much noisier then the AT2’s. I even had a claim open with Toyo as they said they should not be noisy. Had the tires inspected and they were totally fine as I suspected. They are just noisier. Now at 30K miles I’m seeing lots of fine cracks in the rubber between the tread lugs. I guess this is common with the Toyo tires now, and especially on the AT3’s. Several friends have had this and the tire shop I use said yes this is common on the Toyo’s now. He’s talked to his supplier and Toyo and they both say there is nothing wrong with the tires. He thinks it’s the chemicals they use to keep the rubber from getting hard, must have changed?

I too have a H3 V8 Chanpionship Edition and I decided to try the Cooper Discoverer AT3 XLT. The tread is not as aggressive as the Toyo or BFG, but I got to say it rides really nice, they are quiet, and on the little bit of dirt I’ve taken them on at 40 lbs of pressure they did well. I think they have a 65K mileage warranty, which really means nothing. But I do have a friend who made the switch from Toyo to Coopers before I did, and he’s at 50ish K miles and still has more then 1/4 tread left on a Dodge 2500.

Here is what the Cooper looks like.

Wow Toyo AT3 did not last long then. Clearly Toyo realized it was not as good at the AT2? I loved the AT2, have been disappointed with the AT3, as have several I know who had or have them. Was not sure what my next tire would be on my Silverado? Put Coopers Discoverers AT3 XLT’s on my Hummer H3. But if Toyo has fixed the mistakes on the AT3, and a AT4 is coming out. I’ll give Toyo other look when the Chevy is ready to tires.

I’ve run almost all of these on the on the 1500 platform (suburban/yukon xl), except the wild peaks. I don’t run the the E range, ride is too rough. I do run the XL load range as it’s a little better than the C (passenger) tires for towing.

Of them, I did not like the BFG AT2, they were super squirrelly when stopping and they were horrible on icy roads. The General Grabber ATX was very good traction and noise and treadlife. The Toyo AT3 are great, better in my opinion than either of the others.

Haven’t tried the wild peaks (I would have gone with the AT3/W) or tried the copper discoverers.

Right now I’m happy with the Toyo AT3.

Had 35" Toyo AT3's on my dually, great tires. Switched out to Hankook Dynapro AT's also had good luck with them. I only towed heavy with that truck and did not have a problem with either set. No noticeable road noise.
On my Superduty I tried 37" Falcon Wildpeaks, they were a great riding tire and not noisy. Didn't end up keeping it long enough to see how long they lasted.
On my 392 I have 37" Toyo M/T's, great tires but heavy as fook!

Don't think you can go wrong with any I listed, but I have also never been a fan of BFG.

Best tires for a truck that never leaves the shop haha!

Agree though Toyo AT3's are great tires. Perfect for Dave's intended use.

Wife had the Toyos on her SUV. They work well on snow covered roads. Good wear. Her ride was AWD/4WD and they eat tires.
I have them on my Beater 97 Tacoma 4x4, and they do fine. I had the BFG's for a long time on other full size 4x4s and never had good luck with them...and once they started to wear their grip on anything but dry pavement seemed to suffer.

On the dually I run Michelin. They are expensive but wear like iron and are great for what I do with the truck.

I have had a bunch of diesel pickups (3/4 and 1 ton) and have found that the TOYO's last longer than any tire I've tried. I believe it's because they hold up better to the torque of the diesel's. I drive my trucks over 50k a year and change the tires before winter each year. It keeps me on good rubber and the TOYO's always have the most tread left when my 12 month change out comes up. My gas vehicles are much easier to buy tire for.

I recently installed 37” Toyo RTs on my 2500hd,
within a week after install I had one replaced under warranty because it became egg shaped and wobbled like crazy.

After the replacement, no complaints tires have been great I’m at 4K and did notice that they got louder as mentioned by others but not as bad as a MT

I had toyo AT3 for a bit. They wouldn't balance. Wayyyyy to much to type. 3 months of wtf. No less than 3 Big O stores tried. ORW tried. 2 were replaced. Then 2 more. Then I finally spoke to the toyo customer service rep. Great lady, over the top nice.
She basically said hand your phone to the discount tire Manager (havasu)
Few minutes later he said pick anything. She is fully refunding all 4.
They had nittos. These also took twice to balance. Finally gosch ford spent the time to get them right.

I would not buys toyos today. I will in the future. I've had numerous sets of AT2, son also. Zero issues.
If you have a 1 ton maybe the AT3 is ok. On a F150 they just weren't smooth.

Yokohama, Cooper or Michelin would be my choices if I needed them today.

So all 4 wouldn't balance? What wheels?

Toyo and Nitto are the same company. Many of the tires share the same carcass and just go into a different mold.

The Toyo RT is now a new generation. I have noticed this set is louder than my last. But if they hold up as well and last as long, I can deal with the noise.

toyos: I have 5 per truck with the matching spare on 3 vehicles, for a total of 15 at any given time. All are 35s… I have never actually worn out the tread on any of them because once they are older (5+ years) and in the 70-75k mileage range they have delaminated. Probably no less than 5 or 6 delaminated, developed a bubble etc…. Arizona heat is what I blame. I think I have bought 35 of them total over the years.

Love my KO2s, but have never tried Toyos.

I hated my Terra grapplers and Duratracs on my truck.

My BIL swore his Toyo’s were junk and didn’t balance.

Same guy has complained about ever single vehicle I have owned. ( some of you know I go through allot) his biggest complaint was my jeep was hard to turn, steering pump must be shot. Hmmm or it’s the 35’s aired down to 15psi🤦

Some people just like to bitch.

My Toyo AT3's have been awesome on my SD F350. 18X37. Wearing nice and even. They have wore out pretty quickly though. They will be done by 33k miles. I bought all the warranties through Discount so I'll get some money back when I swap them out for tread warranty.

I guess I should wait for the At4's? Hopefully they will be available soon. I have to tow to Buttonwillow 2/23-25.
