The Drive learned on Tuesday morning that production of the Titan XD Diesel will officially be terminated on December 2019. There's no word on current production output or how many more units are scheduled to arrive at Nissan dealerships nationwide, but what we do know is that a gasoline-powered replacement will arrive by the end of 2019.

I've seen a few over the years. I've not heard anything good or bad about them.

I just saw one yesterday, not sure of the performance but god dam that thing is ugly!!

Maybe that will mean the resale will drop and I can pick up one used for a deal. Like others I havent heard much but I have always had great luck with Nissan vahicles in fleets with lotsa miles over the years.

900 lb anchor.
Decent numbers for the cubic inches.
Too big for a half ton, too small for a one ton.

Styling on the Nissans was a bit odd.

Nissan will look at this and say, See, no one wants a diesel 1/2 ton truck, instead of correctly saying, see, no one wants an ugly ass 1/2 ton. Lol.
The only people that want diesels in a half town are guys that "it's got a diesel" and large fleets looking to buy only one fuel type.

Look at the motor trend test I posted. They got 15.2 mpg over 31k miles using it in town, long range free way driving, hauling and towing.

The main prob with putting a diesel in a half ton is you run out of truck way before you run out of motor. Add in high purchase, mainatance and repair costs. It is a always in the red deal.

Until they change that or drasticly increase mileage ( like with a small dislplacment, low powered model) it will never sell too any one other then the die hards

They could also say no one wants a half-ton truck, because the Titan only sold about 10% of the projected numbers required for the program to be profitable...meanwhile Ford sells an F150 every 30 seconds, 24/7

Nissan lost their asses on the Titan program.

The hype with that engine development was crazy... It's too bad they couldn't pull it off.

Agreed [emoji106]

This engine was supposed to go into a Ram 1500, which they discarded when Fiat bought them and provided an in-house diesel instead.

But given the rampant reports of issues, many of which are covered in the Car and Driver test I posted above, it doesn’t appear it was quite ready for prime-time when it came out.

0-60 in 9 seconds is no better than the smaller diesel half-ton trucks, plus the mileage just isn’t there compared to what these smaller engines are capable of.

So you’re left with towing capacity that’s just 1k lbs more than a gas Titan.

Around here diesel costs more than premium. Sometimes it is a dollar a gallon more than regular 87. 15 miles per gallon has no apparent mileage advantage over a gas engine. The diesel engine costs thousands more than the gas. Maybe it can tow more, but most people don't tow all the time. And those who do tow all the time won't bother with a half ton Nissan.

So the only advantage is that the motor may last longer than a gasser. So great, you spend an extra five years in an ugly ass truck. Oooh, there's a win! LOL

A few Asian owners purchased them on accident and the babies were born with mullets so they outlawed them.
The mullet wasn't the problem it was the "rook at me I'm a badass" attitude that came with it.

When that truck came out they were claiming to be shooting for the in between 1/2 ton & 3/4 ton market...and I remember thinking "I don't think that market exists..." Turns out it doesn't! Price and size difference between an F150 & 250 isn't that much anymore.

I have the gas version XD. Keep mind they make an actual half ton then the XD model. This truck has a lot going for it. Number one is the price. Fully loaded you can buy new for 43k. I have a friend who did just that. Thats actual leather not the shit Chevy and ford uses.

It rides really nice. Better than my Tundra did. On the used market they’re are killer deals. That Cummins motor never took off and was not much of a performer. Many problems with it.

A lot of technology in the gas motor. I like many things about it but I’m still looking to sell it. Lol

I bought my Ram Cummins For 43k as well. I don’t think it’s a marketing issue as much as a price and reliability issue. I’ve only seen one in the wild. I was hoping for the diesel to succeed, but it didn’t work out. The Titan is not a bad truck, but no way I’d pay comparable money to own a lesser truck.

Isn’t that gas motor older than the yota 5.7 and the thirstiest v8 of all?

The whole “almost a 3/4 ton” slogan is advertising bullshit IMHO.
It’s based on GVWR...but the Titan is so heavy that this doesn’t translate to capability.

It seems to me that you get all the payload & towing capacity of a 1/2-ton, in a slower truck, with the fuel efficiency of a 3/4-ton.

I’m not a Titan hater...the gas trucks are decent but definitely ancient. The one to get is the gasser. Sure it’s thirsty, but it makes power and is reliable.

I agree. They failed with the payload and towing numbers. As far as MPG, I have the PRo4x XD 5.6 gas. On the freeway I can get 18.5 or so going slow. 75 mph I’m at 17. Around town around 13. I average around 15-16.
I don’t think that’s far off from others. I like it has a sturdier frame, larger brakes which have a nice feel to them, full bed, larger axles and diff etc. to me some are ugly but I like the specific model I have.

No offense to the owners here, but that Nissan Titan is equally as ugly as the new Chevrolet Silverado. Two of the least attractive trucks on the road. And I consider myself a Chevrolet fan, so it pains me to now despise the new Silverados.
