Headed down there in a few weeks...have not been to that part of Mexico before.

Just wondering for any insight on cool things to do or explore while we are there.

Much appreciated.

Hire a panga to take you around Isla Coronado. Large Sea Lion colony on back side and nice beach cove on near side. Bring a lunch/cooler.
Rent a car and drive up to Mission San Javier, it's paved. Spectacular 300 year old mission and grounds, cafes there for lunch.
Downtown Loreto is a walking only corridor with lots of neat buildings and businesses.
Hire a fishing trip. Fishing is said to be world class but I don't fish so not sure of species vs time of year.
Go to Mikes Cantina (1/4 mile up the road to San Javier). Burger and pitcher of beer hits the spot.
Snorkel off the point at Loreto Bay Resort/golf club, spring suit needed this time of year on surface, full suit to dive.

My uncle built a resort called Danzante down there, ai think it's called Danzante Bay now. Was voted # 1 destination spot for years by, I guess?, Destination magazine. Mexican mafia came in and offered him his life, and my aunts, for turning over the resort to them. My uncle who's had dual citizenship for decades went to the Mexican government for protection/help and they actually did step in and handle the mafia. Uncle and aunt were loved down there because they employed so many locals and donated heavily to their school and so on. He finally did sell, moved to an island on Washington and then recently moved back to mexico and started another business.

I saw him in Mexico for my daughters wedding in February and he said that Danzante is fucked up now, big, commercialized and so on. Not the sleepy little place he built. Probably still fun though.

I've been in Baja for a month and in Loreto right now, my girlfriend just flew down for a week.

Fishing now is bottom fish and Yellowtail, no Dorado or Tuna yet.

What do you like to do? Other than drinking, haha. Lots of great resturaunts. Cools bars, try Vics for happy hour (2-8) for great 50 pesos
Margaritas (actually headed there now) Real cool historic district and mission like has been said. If you will have a car, really cool secluded beaches close by like Juncalito, Ensenada Blanca, or Ligui. Beaches in town are some sand, some rocks/pebbles.

Theres only one small beach on Coronado, so you'll share it with anyone else that wants to go ot there for the day.

I'll post some pics in a bit.

Forgot to say if you like to golf, check out Nopolo / Loreto Bay. Beautiful course with some holes right on the Sea of Cortez.

Sounds like ditching Parker was a good move! How long could a couple survive there on a mil. ?

And the best cheesebueger and fries in Baja - Playa Buenaventura. About an hour North of Loreto. Ice frosted mug with your beer and an awesome view.

Used to go to Loreto a lot way back (15ish years ago) left there for East Cape due to bigger, nicer boats. I miss Loreto. I remember the last few trips they were building thousands of condo’s. I would assume the town has changed a lot since I’ve been there. Way more Americanized i’d guess. Was an awesome place for sure. Hopefully it still is, i’ll be following this thread.

Hope you can deal with the air port madness
Be prepared to deal with the shuttle busses and lack of transportation and a gazillion people
I actually got in trouble and they stopped me from taking pics of the mayhem
:p

Brother and I are leaving LAX at 6:25am Thursday. 1.5 hour lay over in phoenix then a 45 min flight to loreto.

We’ve got a house on the beach for the weekend. The bachelor wants to fish so we’re shooting for 2 days this weekend. Will report back with a report….. hopefully 🤣😉

$460 a person round trip on the flight.

Direct was/is $1500 in economy.

Let’s bet on it lol
Being a third generation Tucsonan I have spent alot of time in Mexico over my 56yrs . In my 20's a group of us spent a month going down the east side of baja to Cabo and then back up the west side . We camped on the beaches the whole way in My 72 bronco and my buddies 71 Scout . Now a days I am hesitant to go to Mexico anymore . The Cartel used to stay to itself in their areas but now seem to be rampant all over Mainland Mexico and Baja . To many kidnappings and killings for me . Plenty of other places to go without the danger .

Last time I went was for their 300th anniversary. Big party in town. One of my buddies owns a restaurant in town, but he is up here so restaurant is closed. I had so much fun, we plan to come back for the town's 400th anniversary party.

There wasn't much night life back then. It really was a small place. I'm sure now it is bigger. Lots of retired Americans and Canadians. My friend said lots of the retired guys are former FBI, CIA and LEOs.

The beach in front of the town isn't that nice light sand, it was mostly just alluvium washed down from surrounding hills. The water was super shallow. You could walk out a hundred yards and be barely waist deep. Crazy amounts of sting rays too. I'm sure other beaches around are nicer.

We stayed at the Hotel Oasis. At the time there were not many other options. They do an outdoor grilled/bbq fish dinner that was probably the best fish dinner I have ever had. Hanging out in the bar in the evening we watched the World Series. Suddenly the screen changed to a Telenovela. ( Mexican Soap Opera) We all yell at the bartender...WTF?? He picks up the phone and calls the owner's suite. "Change it back!" He pleads. LOL. I guess they only had one feed back then.

You went to the 300th and are planning on attending the 400th?

The Oasis has a cool old Baja vibe. We like it but the Mission on the malecon is much nicer.

All the big development is south of town in Loreto Bay/Nopolo, Loreto proper is still a really cool little laid back town.

Stopped here yesterday, it was just OK. Maybe an off day, we were the only ones there. The American guy that's owns it's Kid runs/owns the B&B we stayed at in Posada Concepcion.
