Got the alarm call early Saturday morning and as I pull up I notice the broken side door and that's never a good sign. We were warned about a group targeting Stihl Power Equipment and our time came up at 4:08 am and they were out the door at 4:09 am. Other locations have lost as much as 20k but they only got away with a few backpack blowers and a TS 500i, so we were lucky. We had just installed new high security locking shelves for the chainsaws and we had chained down all the other equipment which slowed them down enough to prevent them from getting away with more.

some surveillance video from the last few weeks compared with video from other victims might reveal a clue

I was getting broken into at an alarming rate. One time, we got nailed two times in two weeks. Installed "Roll-A-Shield security shutters. Now, I don't worry at all, The sales girl said I could discontinue my alarm service and it won't matter now.

I do have security cameras with video of them and the Sheriffs have a copy of it. From the looks I am sure they have been in the store before, they knew exactly where to go and how to get it. I did get some info with some photos and what to look for when I review some tapes.

Just curious why is anyone targeting one brand? Glad you got away relatively unscathed.

becuase its good stuff and easy to sell to landscapers that don't care.

I have passed on so many tools over the years that I know are hot. I just can't bring myself to buy stolen tools( its normally pretty clear they are stolen) that's some ones lively hood you took. heaven help you if I catch you stealing mine.

We had one here in Santa Rosa last year. If I remember correctly it was a Stihl store in the Rincoln Valley area. The store was not as lucky as you. They lost most of their merchandise, but they did have cameras. Have your PD contact Santa Rosa PD. Maybe they can compare notes. If I remember the footage correctly they used the vehicle to pull the gates off the doors. They had 5 to 6 guys that knew exactly what to grab and were gone in about a minute or two.

i know you know this, but make sure to check craigslist. you never know you may get lucky. I am sure you gave the serial numbers to the LEO. I would love to hear an up date that said something like "we caught the dumb asses selling it on craigslist"

I'm sure you already know that Empire Mowers in Moreno Valley had a smash and grab too but just in case you'd be interested, 'Below is the video the possible owner posted on his FB page back on 11/30/16 showing the man and women. I believe the owner to be Paul Tavenner ( https://www.facebook.com/paul.tavenner.5 ) which interesting enough looking over the comments regarding the stolen Stihl Power Equipment, someone found someone selling new Stihl Power Equipment on Letgo back on 12/4/16.
Video,

For those without Facebook, here's a news clip of the video.

here is another video of a Stihl shop in Santa Rosa.

That's why I say we got lucky, notice the 4 am on this video, which seems to be the magic time for these groups according to the police and our Stihl rep, plus we only had 2 that were in our store. In the video you can see these guys using a hand held grinder to cut the lock, the two that got into our store had one but left it next to the display. From what we have been told these items are not being sold online, it appears they are going direct to the landscapers to sell it.

There is a guy in Torrance always listing brand new tools on Craigslist. He also sets up at alpine village swap meet which is a known spot to look if your job site gets hit. They probably have a guy like him that buys it to resell. A quick search on Craigslist every day for next month or so might find something.

Houston had a rash of burglaries a number of years back involving Honda driven equipment. If a mower or pressure washer or generator had a Honda engine, it was what they'd steal.

They were even stealing landscape crews trucks and trailers when parked.

they could be taking "orders" too. a very common practice.

4 am is near the end of most leos shifts.

I may have caught them casing my place on the Wednesday before. They spent about 10 min in the store at the Stihl display checking out how things were locked down and went around to the side door which is always locked and pushed and pulled on it. Lots of rubber necking and left without buying anything. They parked out of range of my outside cameras. :(

Sonoma County Sheriff's Dept caught a group of burglars last week after they broke into a local business and stole a bunch of Stihl Power Tools. Same MO as the other jobs. The thieves they caught had fled in a white van the same as the previous jobs. Two of the thieves are from the Fresno area. Sounds like they have been working state wide. Good job Sonoma County Sheriff Department.

Just adding a link of the story for you, https://patch.com/california/rohner...suspects-nabbed-after-car-chase-through-north
