I've never known any Pits till 2 years ago when this guy moved in across street. Now he's a welcomed guest and is here keeping me company maybe 5 times a week. Its a great arrangement for both parties involved; owners get to take nights out together knowing their mutt is in good hands. But there are rules; I don't walk him and I don't pick up his shit in my yard. [I mark it with a brick for owners when they come get him. I've never known if it was enviornment or breed but some mutts are just sketchy & opt to be violent. I grew up and have had nothing but Danes... they're dumb as fuck, adore kids and none violent by nature. But I've enjoyed this thread about Pits. There was a gal friend over last week and I was babystting the mutt. He was curled over in his couch corner sleeping.... he's adorable looking so the chicks always love on him and it works but he has a tell. He growled at me a year ago after we'd been sitting next to each other watching sports... I got close to his head and he growled and then took a swing at me butting the side of my head and it swoll up from head butt. I figure he coulda taken my face off but was just sending me a message that we aint that tight. My bad. So last week this gal who's known the Pitt a year is stroking him as he sleeps in a ball... theres a growl that I didn't hear... and he goes for her face cause she was at his level on hands/ knees on floor while he was on couch. It was loud, fast and violent as fuck. It seemed to take forever till he let her go.... she's got 4 punctures and lots of swelling a week later. Emergency stitched her cheek up and she'll have plastic surgery soon to heal up 'Her moneymaker".... Tell ya what and say what ya want... till you've lived through one its hard to know what to think....I like this mutt but we aint that tight!

So let me get this straight, the dog bit your lady friend in the face for petting him? And the dog is still alive? You continue to babysit the dog? Perhaps I'm weird, but there is no way I would have had that dog back in my house after it growled and headbutted me the first time. Especially after it bit a guest of mine, causing her to need plastic surgery! Who is paying for the surgery? Her? You? Your insurance? Dog owner's insurance?

"the dogs are just doing what dogs do" No. This is not what dogs do. If that dog were mine it would have gone straight to the vet to be put down. There is no "corrective behavior" to fix a dog that bites a woman who is petting him while resting. That goes for any breed.

Wife said something along the lines of people fuck up when they punish their dogs for growling. You take away their ability to communicate with a person.

After that their first reaction is going to be to bite, because if they growl they know that they are going to be punished.

Rescued a squirrell a few days ago. 100lb pit vs 3oz squirrel. Squirrel won. My 100lb pitbull was terrified of the lil guy.

There’s no squirrels in these pics, but there’s some other stuff.
Mr Wilson is a big ol teddy bear, but most of his buddies are not.

Warning, the more you scroll the worse it gets.

I’m out, it’s up to you guys to decide.

I get what you are saying. No need to get upset over posts on the internet.

The amount you have owned is a small number to how many are out there. One thing most do not realize when you look at statistics is how many pits there are compared to other dogs. In most neighborhoods they are 90% of the dogs except small breeds. If you look at the overall numbers of attacks to amount of each breed out there it would change the numbers.

I have been neighbors to, had friends with and family that have owned hundreds of pits. 10X more than any other breed. 98% have been great dogs no issues. But the few that have caused major damage are out there.

I just asked one neighbor last week where his dog was. It had attacked my Male shepherd previously. He attacked the neighbor down the way and was in hiding. Now this dog is far from raised correctly. But it now a statistic against pits being recorded.

The possibility is there like any large breed. It's best to be educated and spend money with a professional trainer. I can list a bunch of first hand knowledge of them attacking but like I mentioned it is 2% of the hundreds of pits I have been around. One friend switched from pits to a Presa canario. Talk about a intimidating dog I would not go near. Few Rottweilers I have known the same. Much worse than your average pit.
Oh agree... I've seen a Presa Canario. I don't go near that thing.

And someday we will all agree on one thing! -- These are fooking animals, can be unpredictable at ANY time, Can turn at ANY point in time, And none of them are all sugar and spice and everything nice! -- Even though some let their dogs control their lives!

So! Go Ahead! -- Make My Day!

Dog is DOG.

Not person. Unable to rationalize. Dog is ANIMAL. Runs on instinct. Can be trained, but result is only as good as Master/Alpha puts into it.

People humanize animals all the time, and are surprised when animal follows instinct when IT FEELS threatened/scared/challenged. Even well trained animals can be spooked or pushed into aggressive fight behavior.

People do stupid shit like "play" with a dog/cat -any animal really- aggressively, do you want to mark yourself as a chewy toy? When it growls you show fear and back away? Guess what...you are a Beta now.

Dog is boss now.

Dumb fuck.

You know why sheep dogs don't eat or attack their herds? Because they get the utter shit kicked out of them until they learn their JOB is to PROTECT the SHEEP. They see what happens to other things that attack their herds...boom boom things dead....dog is not idiot (mostly).

Train your dogs. Don't be a beta bitch.....and for god's sake if you are going to trust an infant to a dog, it better know it's dead if anything happens to that kid...that's it's primary job.

Now that I've pissed on this dumpster fire of a post, my sincere condolences to the family of the attack, so sad.

100% agree

My family and I have had a bunch of breeds. I haven't read this thread ,but I get the jist. Lock jaw is a myth. I've broken up fights with other dogs than my own. I had to put down my companion a few months ago. He was the best dog I will ever know. You weirdos shoving your fingers up dog ass? Lol that's hilarious. Break a limb they come loose fast. Shove your 2 fingers up their nose and apply equil pressure to their throat believe me, either that dogs nose is going to be peeled from its face or he is letting go. Best bet if your not an alpha don't get involved.

One incident was my neighbor. Single lady in her 50s with a Cocker spaniel. I thought she was being robbed at her fence. Turns out some transient had a pitifully terrier, it had latched on to the little spaniel by the lower jaw . Damn near pulled it out through the Pickett fence. Owner was beating it with a mag light. Once I realized the situation, I pulled his face apart and pinned him with my knee. My blue nose wanted to protect me but I would never expose him to that. The spaniel lived for another few years. I broke into tears when the same neighbor walked an older rescue pit bull by my house. She saw how ownership and training can mold a soul. Dogs have souls!

How do you establish an Alpha relationship with your dog? Without realizing, I used Caesar Milan's method on our large male Bassett and very large male Golden Retriever. Each were rescues. We had no idea of their backgrounds and each did shown aggression, only one time that I saw. When I witnessed that aggression, I immediately held each down and held them down for about 20 seconds. Years later, on his TV show I saw Caesar's recommended three fingered, hold down touch. Something very similar worked for me and our large male dogs. They were never aggressive towards us or other family and friends again. BTW - Our Newfoundland was never aggressive in any manner. She was a female and a true Nanny. Protective - without a doubt. But, never aggressive. It's been said, a Newfoundland just looks at you and passes judgement. And that's enough.

I had Mr Bradley at 7 months old. Puppy's do stupid shit, like chew on things etc. When I caught him pissing inside a room in our house. THAT WAS THE LAST TIME. Rubbed his face in it then threw him outside. That's my domain. Always taught my dogs to heel and obey on a leash. I always buy a harness not a choke collar as that will make them more aggressive toward others and yourself. Dog fights are no joke!

In a whole ...imagining one of you guys trying to finger a dog ass in a fight makes me laugh.

Like Stevie wonder trying to find a piano. .

You have to control the situation and display dominance.

Same as a fight with a human

Owners a rich dude and before this is all over she may sue his ass.... He was gonna just offer her $150K after the attack and I advised him to simply wait this out a bit. He's being very generous and supportive saying whatever she needs she gets [he's a retired atty] and they had a friendship of value prior to the attack. He and I have discussed the sensative nature of all this in that she'll have many people in her ear and may ultimately want money depending on plastic surgery results on her face. Its an interesting situation for sure and far from over .....

You know you share liability (the dog under your control), yeah?

Might want to buckle up.

I'm needy I guess.

But you placed your neediness before the safety of others...

What opinion?

You've admitted to recklessly endangering a friend. And anyone else the dog may encounter in the future.

That's not an opinion, that's illegal.

Have you shared with her that you knew the dog was dangerous?
