5150 Whips invited us to their Idaho Sand Dune run.

We bust up the travel up here with a night at the roadside rest in Scipio.
Neat, nicely run petting Zoo next to it that the girls love. Gets better every year the girls say.

Lite traffic through Vegas but towing a TH through the greater Salt Lake metro area on the I-15 is like driving on a floating pinball machine.
Sux.

Heading into Idaho falls we passed a convoy of flatbed trucks hauling portable refrigerated morgues.
Bad sign our truck went into limp mode.

Lots more fueling stations avail along this long stretch that there were 12 years ago.
Only a 36 gal tank on the GMC we have to refuel often.

Got my fake RD ID:

I-15 Northbound thru the Virgin Gorge back to two Lanes.
For a spell it was one narrow lane with the concrete barriers giving you less than 12 inches margin on both sides in a few spots.

Add the bouncy road and winds sheer hard to not scrape the barriers. Used to see rigs ahead of us hitting it. Glad to see the single lane gone.

Is this your first trip up there?

I've been twice. Its most unbelievable. If you have a quad or dirt bike, make sure to go to the top of the stair steps.

Totally worth the drive...

I know the exact stretch you are talking about on the 15 where towing is terrible in that construction zone we call it the "gauntlet". I avoid it when I can.

Suddenly barriers appear and split lanes.
Trucks towing doubles rolling 80 in all lanes.
Ya gotta be on your game.

Oh ya people are nuts! I drove that everyday for a year going to my folks house while mine was being built. Add some snow and ice in the winter and it gets great.

Third trip.
We were here for the total eclipse.
Good group of people with the 5150.
Nice campground folk too.
Like DUMONT used to be.

When you tell people about it, they all say it's too far. But once you've been...

I sure wouldn't mind going again.

It took 2 forced regens to clean it out. It’s a brutal process.

Service manager said they are seeing it in vehicles that travel from Mostly lower elevation to higher.
But that’s probably mostly who travel here.

Huge duning population in the Southwest desert areas.

We’ll see.
Mostly newer trucks. Ford and GM.

Covered by warranty or 70.000 miles which ever is longer.

Im wondering if driving the truck more often not towing a heavy load might help. Maybe less stress on the particulate system.

Started the truck up this morning,,,, check engine light.
We’re back in the shop.

St Anthony GMC one of those cool old wood frame dealers.
Kinda like Ojai Ford used to be.
Really cool.

Nice people, took us in same day both days.
I have a suspicion this truck issue is going to be a repeating problem for some time to come.
Important to keep a paper trail.

Didn’t get pix yet. But I will. Must get a video too.

Magic Mike leading the pack shooting some thrilling lines,,, on the sand that is.

The Nurses in this group have brass tits,, fearless on the dunes.
GMC truck in the shop for may be quite some time. Not looking good.

Have a Pontiac loaner car.

So I've towed to St Anthony's, and then to Couer D'Alene, from Phoenix, in one shot. Lol

I've towed for 20-24 hours a few times. It's rough.

All the talk in camp is how poorly the I-15 is to travel through SLC. It is brutal.

Yes it is actually about 30 miles south of SLC, been going on for years. It is actually slightly better than it was last summer. We go down redwood road to go around and avoid it.
I’ll pass the word and check that out.
It’s insane.

Yes it is! Get off at Bangerter highway. Head west about 2.5 miles and hang a left at Redwood Road. Head south on that about 9-10 miles and then head back East on Pioneer Crossing. That will bypass it all.
Much appreciated.
thanks.

I would now and will if this truck is a buyback.
Fords are having the same issues.

Ford fixes it by cutting and baking the filter in an oven, GM replaces the system with updated new and does an updated flash.

I knew I was in for a ride when they didn’t want to give me a work ticket/receipt the first attempt.

That trick is a red flag that it’s a common problem and they are preventing you from collecting the paper trail you need for a lemon law claim.

Our Predator 3500 committed Hari Kari this trip too.
Harbor Freights are in short supply of replacement-under-warranty 3500s.

I did every cure on YouTube. So did all the commenters and they had no success either.

im headed to st anthonys on friday for a week. will be my second trip to the dunes there. ive been all over that area and the pnw when i was transporting rv's in 2018. the construction in salt lake has always sucked. the tow thru utah seems to be uphill in both directions with a headwind everytime, lol i always had to stop for fuel 3 times when ever traveling thru the state on the 15. st george, santaquinn, then logan.

It got so hot on the dunes everyone was running hot we just took short trips to a shady beach on the lake.
Everyone packed up and left today for Montana.
Im stuck in Idaho waiting for the truck to get fixed, then home.

I'm pretty sure we saw you guys, we let the dogs play in the creek for a bit Sunday afternoon.

That's a long stay up there, that really sucks the truck is still down. Hopefully they get you rolling soon.

Headed home on the I 15 the truck threw a code again, went into 40 mph walk mode and we limped into the Rollin’ Home RV park in Nephi.
Dumb luck 1 mile from where we broke down.

Nice new RV park run by a really super couple.
Almost finished construction but the WiFi and 50 amp service and full hook ups works.

No loaner car available, no rent a car either so we’re using the Can Am for transportation.
GMC was only willing to tow the truck to The Ephraim GMC dealer for further repairs.

After the truck arrived at the dealer we received a disturbing phone call from the service advisor that they have more “important projects and they won’t be able to get to it until September.” Exact words and in other words get it outta here.

Kinda strange The GMC dealer in St Anthony just let half their employees go and was happy to help us. Their was a GMC dealer here in Nephi too.

Nice little market in town just a couple miles from the RV park.
Markets like this have locally grown produce and baked goods.
Haven’t tasted sweet watermelon in years and theirs didn’t disappoint.

The laundromat was a shit hole with one working washer and one working dryer.
Fuel is 25 cents a gallon cheaper a mile into town from the I 15.

Some interesting OHV trails near the RV park we’ll explore and report back.
I see a good future for the Rollin’ Home RV park.

I remember reading you were excited to get that truck, that sux. I think at this point I'd park that truck on fire in front of the dealership.
On a positive, nice camp spot.

Damn, I hate to read this thread. What did the last dealership say when they give it back to you? I don't wanna jinx myself, but no issues with mine yet at 3800 miles.

That’s it’s a common problem amongst people towing their toyhaulers up there from the Southwest. That’s a lot.

Dunno if I mentioned it but as you have sacrificial anodes to protect your boats metal our Predator 3500 defaulted to a sacrificial generator.

You can’t be more conscientious about maintaining it as I was. It puked and it ain’t getting better.
Did all the recommended fixes and bootlegs - none cured it.

So it gets exchanged under warranty and the replacement unit will simply be kept on hand at the house for power out episodes.

The HF Predator 3500, like the Chevy Vega is $50 away from being a good product.

Why I payed more for a used Honda vs another off brand generator in 2009 and vocal about them. I have a 3000eu
