So it looks like I have a buyer for my 2019 F250 and since I am selling it for what I paid for it, 3 years ago, it seems like a no brainer. We already took our section 179 deduction on it back in 2020 so I am going to get into another truck to take it again this year. I don't need a heavy duty truck, so want to go half ton. I was thinking of lowering it but will probably just do a 4" - 6" lift on 35's. I don't really tow with it and it will be mostly used to haul my boys and their gear to baseball.

There are obviously a few options so want to hear from the RDP Brain Trust.

2020 - 2023 GMC Sierra or Chevy Silverado - any opinions on the 2.7 Turbo?? Probably will end up with a 5.3 but seeing some decent deals that are outfitted with the 2.7

2021 - 2023 Ford F150 - 2.7, 3.3 or 3.5 ECOBOOST or 5.0 Coyote (I like the 5.0)

2021 - 2023 Dodge 1500 with HEMI

2022 - 2023 Toyota Tundra (haven't really done much research on these, but they look pretty good lifted so its an option)

How long are you going to keep it? If it's a long-term play, I'd go with the simple, but thirsty, Tundra.

If it's short-term, the 5.3 is a solid engine, even though I didn't get a ton of miles out of mine in my 1500. I'd do the 3.5 EcoBoost for the big gas tank, which means longer range, more HP, and flat floor for my pups.

Mark Dodge in Lake Charles LA has some
great deals on the Rams.

The Carli kit for the Rams on 35”s looks great. It only raises the truck a couple inches though.

Was also looking at 5.3 GMCs, but they seem to be 10-15% more

I have a 2020 Silverado with the 5.3. Good, peppy truck, but doesn't tow heavier loads all that great which is not a big deal to me as I don't need to tow long distances. 50K trouble free miles. Nice space inside. Couple things on the truck drive me nuts such as the auto door lock/unlock, auto-stop, and seems to be a lot of blind spots from the drives seat turning corners, etc. All in all, a pretty good truck. I had a 2017 F150 with 3.5 Ecoboost previously which I liked a lot better.

May try a Dodge next time.............

Does not qualify for Section 179… and have you seen how many kids he has?

My 2 cents -

Stick to the non-turbo gassers if your gonna keep it out of warranty.
The 5.0 F150 / 10 speed hauls ass, that would be my vote for a V8 gasser if I was buying new, now.

I actually just got a call from Jay over at Costa Mesa GMC and he told me that they are doing 5 years 100K mile warranty on the 2.7 Turbo trucks.

I like the Coyote motor a lot and I think it was you who told me that Whipple does a CA Legal 700HP kit for it.

The Tundras look pretty cool. Do they offer a crew cab standard (6ft) bed?

$9500

$8300 from Whipple, if you don’t have the dual alternator setup.

Get another F250 as drive way ornament with the tax deduction.

Buy a Honda Odyssey or whatever they are called for baseball practice.

Ram 1500 with hemi. Comfortable. Quiet. (Except when your exhaust manifold warps) Powerful. Clean styling. Pussy magnet

I don't like new GM styling.

Fords are for brokeback cowboys. Fords are uncomfortable.

Tundras are wierd looking IMO.

Cybertruck??

I really like my 2020 F150 with 2.7. Has all the bells and whistles, plenty of room for a family of 5 and is comfortable to drive. Previous F150 had the 3.5 and I was a little hesitant to go with the 2.7 but it does fine with the 10 speed.

It pulls my 25' Eliminator Eagle with no problems and has also hauled my 24' Enclosed trailer loaded with 7500 lbs of desert toys, gas and water for day trips. The older I get, the less desire I have for more power, lifting, lowering, etc. I am a fan of keeing it stock and reliable, and keeping the ride quality. It has a set of rims and tires on it with a leveling kit and it works fine for me.

I have a new F150 and opted for the Powerboost. It hauls ass and pulls my boat great. I love the truck

Joe I’ve got the 2.7 turbo in my work truck and have hauled my boat and the SXS plus quads not problem. As for day to day it gets right at 20mpg and I’ve got 85k miles on it with no issues.

My only complaint really is the seats aren’t the most comfortable and the stupid rattle in the side view mirror. Other than that it’s a fun truck and if needed a full size truck I’d definitely consider it but I really like all the features and looks of the dodge trucks and would most likely get one if I had the choice.

My 1 ton sits 90% of the time over this... I love my truck, its great for our long road trips, sleds on the deck, pulling trailers and the havasu runs....but beyond that Ill drive my BMW or van. I keep looking for a pawpaw condition s10 5spd or something similar to daily..just haven't found one that I want.

@OldSchoolBoats Derp derp buy an f150 you can pull a 42' fifth wheel no problem!!!

Tbh I'd look at the Ram's...they are freaking nice.. FWIW I drove my 6.2L F150 for nearly 180k miles doing nothing but basic maintenance. It kept me safe through being ran into 4x, and hauled everything I essentially do today just fine...

Unless you can get the GM 2.7 turbo 4 for the same price or less than the 5.3, I'd just go with the 5.3. My boss got the turbo 4 in his new 1500 trail boss and gets worse mileage than I get in my '15 with the 5.3 and a 6 speed. The engine has good power and performs well for a 4 banger, but there is zero economy savings to it.

Ive been looking for an S10 blazer to put around in.

I’ll probably do a 5.3/6l80 6 speed swap. It’s damn near a weekend bolt in job. I’m thinking it will get in the high 20 MPG on the highway for like $18k.. and could probably launch the boat.

A 6.0L will fit but you have to notch the frame for the ac compressor...;)😅

Had a buddy that did it years ago with a big single in a 2 door....thing was a nasty sleeper.

Should be a button on the center of dash. You just have to push it everytime you start the truck.

They even have accessory mounts now that fix that problem :)

It’s like legos with a little wiring 😂

Didn’t you just get a 3.0 diesel SUV? What’s holding you back from getting another baby duramax?

I had the transmission go out in my Ram and I was out of a truck for 17 weeks! In that time, I rented everything! It would take forever to explain my findings, but the Silverado was my favorite, but only with the 5.3....the 2.7 is garbage. The Ford with the eco boost is actually a fun truck, I like the big backseat and it had plenty of power. If I was able to get a coyote, it may be a favorite. The Ram is garbage and I hate the dial to change gears. The Toyota is pretty good, but I'm not the biggest fan of their v6 turbo. The Honda Ridgeline was actually higher on the list than the Nissan and the Ram. Test them all. You'll need to in order to make a decision for you.
