The fire pit thread started this

I have been wanting to do a real killer fire pit area, so we had a designer create a sketch for the yard on the East side of the house. It will be 3 feet deep, 16 feet in diameter. In the center will be a 2 foot tall by 4 foot wide fire pit. It'll have accent lighting around the perimeter of the area and the steps. The walkpaths will be outlined in medium sized river rock with quarter minus filling that in. The extra dirt will be placed in irregular shaped mounds around the pit and on that side of the yard. Various desert plants and bushes will be planted to give it a walk in the desert type feel.

Lots of work and time but it'll be worth it when it's time to relax.

we were talking doing something similar, only we were gonna put the Jacuzzi and fire pit up on the mounds so we would get more lake view and water run off when it rains,,,,never thought of draining it to sewer..... wouldn't it smell all the time with the p trap dry???

There has to be something, trick to it, because in CA any outdoor shower etc that does not have an overhang has to be tied into sewer to be in code. Doing it this way would make it way less risky of having a koi pond in your backyard.

Not going to sewer for sure. I'm doing research right now on what I would need to do if anything. Arizona is a different animal when dealing with rain water. Since there is so little of rainfall they simply don't account for it much.

You could install a p trap primer to keep it full:thumbsup

We use a wet seal on all the drains at work, zero smell or emmisions.

I kinda delt with this on our last house, we sank the Jacuzzi 24''... but it was on a hill so one side could drain...

Your going to need a sump pump or a drain for the monsoons unless you put a weather tight roof over the pit. Looks like a bad ass project. Can't wait for the progress pics.

If you are running gas to the pit for the flame I assume you will need a permit. When the inspector comes out, I'm sure he will provide guidance on what type of drainage will be needed.

You did pull a permit didn't you?

Actually I'm a regulatory guy so I did check on a permit. :thumbup: No gas, electric or water going to this so I was told not one needed. Now when I decide on the drainage type , that might change things.

Funny you mention this. Just last night the wife and I were talking about adding an outdoor shower head on the side of the house by the pool. Not sure what you mean by "overhang"? The eave? It will drain into the planter so was not planning on hooking up to the sewer.

Sorry about the jack. The fire pit thread also got me thinking about one, which has now turned into fire pit, an outdoor kitchen, covered patio and a shower.:eek Looking forward to the build pics of yours.

So a little update on this project. A huge shout out to Lunatic Fringe.. Not only did he take care of me on the block but he also gave me the name of a good contractor who has taken the reins on this project. Block was delivered yesterday and they started to set the base. It will get a french drain with a secondary means of draining installed as well. I am running a small pvc from the drain, under the floor and up the outside of the wall. If the rains are heavy enough I can hook up an external DC pump and pump out the pit into another area of the yard near the fence.

wow,.. thanks for the thread:thumbup::thumbup:... some of your ideas are similar to mine.... ours is going in the natural drainage so it won't be dug down, but we raised the lot 2' ..

Looks like they figured it out on the last page finally.. but I'm still unsure how this french drain works, and the other pipe with a temp pump when needed?

French drain uses a perferated pipe wrapped in a permeable fabric and then trench is back filled with stone. as water seaps down thru ground into drain water is moved away from structure.
I think the pump idea is if the whole seating area winds up filling with water he can just hook up a pump to a pipe outside the pit and pump water out.

So I have a few more pics. The drain system, and the dirt has been leveled out into mounds. The only thing left now is to add some desert type plants and trees.
