I’m the first to back construction union labor because overall it provides a higher quality product. That being said, the longshoreman have been their own mafia for a long time.

What’s sad is that they are all led by their mob bosses who make millions.

I can get behind protecting those who are working today, but moving forward automation is the future. Longshoreman want to act like anyone could get their job. You pretty much have to give your left nut to even be considered. It’s not a secret that they hand down their memberships.

They are digging their own graves, maybe not this generation, but probably the next.
And they are blindly following an idiot.

What’s sad to me is that the average guy cannot see that the top dogs are only looking out for themselves.

They can get the people fired up but their intentions are less than pure.

Most all ocean freight shipping companies don’t blink an eye to wages or wage increases. They make a killing every year. Especially during covid. They hiked the cost of container shipment from about $4k to over $20k in less than 12 months. However, the shipping industry would love nothing more than to automate every aspect of our ports. View attachment 1435179
They didn't "hike" the fees. The laws of supply and demand did, and now the charges are cratering for the same reason. Ocean shipping companies don't set those prices, the entities that put their goods in the containers do.

things change, life changes, 40 years ago my local only represented the in house company guys. So when we went into negation's they only had our interests on the table. Now my local has grown, they rep outside construction, I 100% believe its a conflict, they are fighting for hours both inside and outside. The union makes money no matter what.

Prior to my retirement I was a thorn, being very critical and outspoken knowing full well I was bulletproof both from the company and the union.

The longshoremen are looking at a shortsighted windfall.

Being involved in over seas shipping as a car guy hobbyist I went from paying about 3k a container to 6.5k, it made selling JDM parts a bitch. when your listing the same stuff in a niche market for very specelized 90's stuff it was a kick in the nut's. I miss it, but glad I got out when I did.

Damn we made money though.

Years ago I went to a shop with a friend that specialized in modifying Skylines. The owner tossed out some numbers on what he was charging for customisations using JDM stuff and I was floored. That being said it was top notch work, and the cars were pretty badass.

I just did a search on Skyline GT-Rs and this ad popped up. They're asking $195K. Daaaang!

Back in the day 1506 where board donkeys and local 42L where lathers and framers and certified welders before you became a journeyman
Lathers are extinct because the didn’t want to evolve. They thought walls would always be plaster. Well, they aren’t. Drywall took over. It’s faster and it looks better. Interior systems carpenters are supposed to be certified welders before journeying out. With the pussification of America we’ve made it so if they take the class twice and can’t pass that’s good enough.

This... automation is coming for everyone's job. The pay increases aren't the issue here it's a way of life in a lucrative industry. The pay increases are included so they have something to bargain with. At least the union is trying to protect the jobs. Reality is it's not gonna matter and when automation comes for your job your probably not gonna have a union to fight for you. Only so many programmer jobs available and AI is gonna take those too.

When robot repair is done by robots and pogramming is done by AI. What jobs will be left?

All the Union Bosses will be "Flush" in CASH and sure ain't going to give-a-shit about the "Grunts" and never have!! They are just "Pieces" to the Goal.

Ironically plaster has made a big comeback in high end custom homes.

Got a question, not specific to the strike. We headed to the River on Monday. All the trains we saw from before Ludlow to where they are no longer visible along the 40 were stopped. This was at least 10 trains. Yesterday, going down River there was a train stopped at Topoc and also on return. Is there any correlation to the strike and the train operators protesting......or is this just an interesting coincidence.

Like Venetian plaster? That’s a finish on top of the drywall.

No like legit plaster lol.

It’s big in Ojai and picking up in the hills of Malibu etc. Not the entire house but fireplaces, accent walls etc.

Edit. There’s not enough work to bring back an entire trade lol. But it’s funny how things come back in style.

Well, I don’t know Harold Daggett must be in hard times because he had to sell his 76 foot yacht. I’m sure the union will provide a Learjet to fly him around to the different ports. Tough times for sure.🤣

I like it. I could see certain areas it being very popular. In Tronconnes Mexico it makes sense because of all the moisture.

Our economy is not as fine shape as portrayed in the Fake News, and to have a Union Leader come out and threaten to Cripple and Bring It To Its Knees, IMO is not the way to gain support or Sympathy.

The Poor Souls, still suffering from the Hurricane and receiving little to no help from "Brandon", for this Union Boss and others to Promise & Provide the people needing simple essentials such as fresh water, basic food, etc. would do "Wonders" to their Image with the American People. 🤔

Completely agree. They are trying to protect the machine not the gears that make it run.

The guy has one job, and is doing it exceptionally well, like him or not.

If you asked him, protecting the machine is protecting the gears that make it run.

It is not Dagget’s fault the market sat on its hands, and offshored and outsourced everything in this country and made him more powerful. It is his job to leverage that climate, even if it hurts society. He is doing his 1 singular job.

The whole port system is ripe for disruption.

Last evening on FOX, a reporter was speaking about an interview with a man who knew the Union Boss and his family. He said that there were Mob ties at some time or another and this "BOSS' is the perfect candidate to come up missing when found "IF" it could be in the Trunk of A Car in an abandoned parking lot somewhere.

This topic of job preservation reminds me of one afternoon in 1988 wandering the streets of a then a very rustic Cabo San Lucas.
Myself and a couple of fishing buddies were killing time seeing the town one afternoon, shortly after arriving to fish for a few days.
As we walked by a new building under construction, I noticed a worker with a hammer and chisel chipping a vertical slot up the face of one interior wall, with others visible he'd already completed.
After observing for several minutes I inquired it's purpose and another nearby worker in broken English explained it was for running wiring.
Naturally being an electrician, it really peeked my curiosity, so after continuing my observation, I asked "Why don't you install the box and conduit prior to placing the concrete in the wall forms" ?
The look of pure indignance he flashed in return, spoke volumes before he even opened his mouth. "Then what would the man with the chisel do ?"
Well he did have a point. 😁;)

Talk to my bud that’s a longshoreman at the port of Los Angeles this morning. He says if the East Coast ships are diverted to the West Coast they will walk honoring the strike
West coast guys still talking about walking?

I'm sure the editor urging his staff to obtain the most sensationalized story bits was massaging his boner over that one as he watched the ratings soar. 🥳

They are in a different UNION. I heard they won’t unload ships that were supposed to go to the striking ports.

The irony between politics and unions is humorous to me. I recognized it 20 years ago when I was barely 18 years old getting dispatched on my first day through a local SoCal union. To bring this topic more local, SoCal has two port terminals that are automated - APM Terminals and Long Beach Container Terminal. I took part in completing the automation infrastructure at APMT. The project was delayed for 6 months because ILWU resisted the automation movement. I watched the local meetings with the POLA Harbor Commissioners and ILWU. I also sat in meetings with the directors of APMT. What the ILWU failed to realize is that the political party they stand behind and support have forced the automation movement. The Democratics in California only care about going green. They passed the Clean Air Action Plan which pushes the ports to be net zero emissions by 2040. The tenants of POLA and POLB can lean on the CAAP all day long to automate their terminals. If the tenants are going to be forced to make the green investment you better bet their new equipment will be automated. I don't know if ILWU will ever realize the political party they support and empower are driving the policies to eliminate their jobs. The first automation phase at APMT was in 2019 and the ILWU is currently backing Harris, so obviously they are not learning.

The ILA is seeking a 77% wage increase over six years as a condition to sit down to talks with maritime employers, according to a person familiar with the negotiations.

The way I see it the unions have DESTROYED America. With the price of EVERYTHING skyrocketing, the union labor is making it where most people will not be able to afford anything made here & now won't be able to afford things as they arrive at the docks from places that can manufacture goods 20 times cheaper than our crooked unions & government allow America too. Just sayin'
According to Wall Street Journal today, the dockworkers make more than most people already pushing the average wage at $200,000 - 250,000 . Golly gee, let's preserve those jobs by asking to almost double their wages, LOL. If the union crooks pull this off, the dockworkers will surely be replaced by more inexpensive automation. Just common sense.

Oscar Mayer went on strike in the early 80's & we were all fat dumb & happy BUT after a year long strike, the union (us, I guess) got what they asked & then they had to shut the kill floor down 6 months later. It was too expensive to slaughter there. Laid off at least 75% of the workforce, yet we were all happy before but now broke & unemployed. Thank you union! You're just the best.

Unions = Downfall of America as we know it. Not an exaggeration.

So to touch on that, my union at least is aware of that. We say it all the time. We saw it in Boston and we don’t want to be the highest paid unemployed carpenters. Some very smart people negotiate our contracts.

My story about the union goes like this...

I had been working as a design engineer in my field for many years, knew how all the systems worked, knew how they installed, knew all the codes, knew all the parts and pieces, etc....never actually installed myself but also knew my way around tools, etc....I ended up leaving the company I was at to help start a new company in the same industry, at the time we didnt have enough work for me to be full time in the office...so I reached out to one of the subs we use, a union sub, and said I just need some work to get me by...he said I can't use you in the office, but if you want to throw on some bags and hit the field, I can always use good workers...I agreed, but said I could not afford to work for apprentice money, he agreed and said since I come with as much knowledge and understanding as I did, he would pay me journeyman wages....worked out fine for a while, then someone got wind of how much I was getting paid and they basically threatened the boss that if I was going to be paid more then the guys fresh out of HS with no experience then they were going to go to union to complain...then the supers topped giving me work, everytime I called in for my assignments, there was nothing for me...but yet everyone else was working...it got to the point I just quit, which I am sure is what they wanted...

Side note, All the trucks they mandated that are low emissions drive in and out of the port about a mile to huge transfer stations and the same trashy trucks that were banned from the ports still transport all that gear. But the ports are green

These guys might benefit in the short term. But they just sealed their fate in the long term. The ports will automate like crazy to avoid this type of shit.

Just curious since I haven’t seen any figures. How much has the shipping costs come down for the ports that have converted to automated in Long Beach and overseas. ?

Automation is great, until it’s my job that’s getting “automated”.

Heaven help us if automation comes around, and we have tens of millions of people sitting around with nothing to do and no paycheck.

While I can agree with what you’re saying. That’s also a short sided view on commerce as a whole.

We should absolutely do things faster and more efficiently.

I have a buddy who owns a construction biz but is always too backed up with work so I had to roll the dice with some Home Depot sidewalk guys.
