This could get ugly. The higher wages is the somewhat easier battle. (Although, fighting for California wages in the South probably isn’t reasonable.). Pushing back against automation isn’t going to be easy.

The big unions that Biden has bowed down to are using his inflation to extract huge wage gains from their employers. Boeing has offered the Machinists a 30% raise, a $6K signing bonus, guaranteed annual bonuses above $2K, and expansion of health and other benefits.

They responded with a GFY.

lol proof that unions are the modern day mob. That guy sounds like he belongs in a godfather movie.

Aren’t most of the ports fairly automated by now? I wonder how difficult it would be for them to get near full automation.
Gonna get interesting because Biden isn’t going to get involved in an election year. Dems will need to play the pro union card no matter how ugly this gets.

LA/LB has some automation. Pretty crazy to see it in action. They turned down a 50% wage increase. If it was about short term money this would be over.

Jeez, they should ask the UAW how that no automation is working out.

I’d love to see cars built 100% by robots. Then they’d be built far better with far less recalls for assembly issues. And the Union can go to hell unless they want to be retrained as robot installers, programmers and maintainers.

It doesn’t end well that’s for sure. It’s a tough situation all the way around. In a world economy, the one with the lowest cost wins. Our regulations, taxes, more taxes, insurance, etc all set us up to lose. Add-in higher supply chain and inflated union wages and we’re not set up for the long game. We’ll never be a manufacturing powerhouse again..

Not under an America last administration that's for sure.

The administration can’t change what’s wrong with our manufacturing. Tariffs help short term but hurt us as much as the exporting country. We’ll need to strip out our cost and quit relying on trying to slow down others to become dominate again.

AI is going to take all those Jobs in 25 years. The money is in repairs. 😉

In 5 years, don’t be surprised to see 4 Robots from Honda pull up, and perform all your yard work, including climbing trees and trimming.

Off loading containers seems like an ez target for Those Jobs.

At what point can I afford my own robot to perform all my household repairs and cleaning?

$100k and I might buy one😂

Actually there is quite a bit the administration could do. They can cut a lot of red tape, they can fast track permits, they can help negotiate contracts (even though would like to keep the government out of that) They can give tax incentives to bring back manufacturing to America. That’s just the tip of the ice burg.

What contracts, Negotiating price? What .gov group would be involved there?
Permits are a sliver of a companies costs. Doesn’t do much to make a company successful long term.
Tax incentives like what we give to EV to artificially boost demand?
They’re all short term fixes.

It is not that easy.
Costs within the US have to come down and reduce US MFG costs. No easy answer for that

Who’s going to repair the robots? All we’re doing is creating new minimum wage jobs and then the process starts all over again.

Unions aren’t going anywhere but for the last 20 years they’ve been digging themselves into a corner. They’ll have to reinvent themselves in a way but they can’t continue to operate like they’re still living in the 60’s.

Public Relations would be one Hell Of START!! When the President Of the "UAW" spoke at President Trump's GOP Convention, I had never seen him speak before. and when he was finished, I hated the "F*****S" GUTS!!

He came off as if It's Going To Be OUR WAY OR NO WAY!!

IMO this Ain't going to work anymore and with President Trump For Sure!! He came off as Old Time's "Gangsta"o_O

I'm not a particularly pro-union person. I do have a fear though of this going way wrong for everyone. The covid shutdown showed us how dependent we are upon the global trade/economy. Now, let's factor in the communist thinking of one political party. What type of Holy hell would be unleashed if the ports and unions were "nationalized" for the sake of "National Security" and the US economy?

Currently, up is down and right is wrong. They want to push communism, they just use a different name. I'd rather work with the mobsters running the docks now, than a different set in suits from DC.

I wonder how that works if we’re at war? 😉

I'm not a union guy, to me they are a form of parasite in they just siphon money away from corporations and their members to exist.

I live in a very weak union city and it's relatively cheap to build and no buildings have fallen down.

They had a time and place but it's in the past IMO.

Good write up on it.

1947 Taft-Hartley Act

More than 170 trade groups are urging the Biden administration to intervene at the last minute to avoid a strike.

The government can invoke the 1947 Taft-Hartley Act, which allows the president to ask a court to order an 80-day cooling-off period when public health or safety is at risk.

However, President Joe Biden reportedly does not plan to invoke it – even as he urges the two sides to settle their differences.

The ILA is seeking a 77% wage increase over six years as a condition to sit down to talks with maritime employers, according to a person familiar with the negotiations.

The way I see it the unions have DESTROYED America. With the price of EVERYTHING skyrocketing, the union labor is making it where most people will not be able to afford anything made here & now won't be able to afford things as they arrive at the docks from places that can manufacture goods 20 times cheaper than our crooked unions & government allow America too. Just sayin'

Catching up on the news.
Why people dislike the unions. It is due to this type of BS.

USMX reportedly made a new offer to the ILA on Monday afternoon that would've raised wages by nearly 50% over the new contract as well as tripling employer contributions to retirement plans, better health care and kept language about automation in the deal. Sources told FOX Business that the ILA rejected the offer and didn't make a counter.

They can get rid of the epa and that would help American manufacturing. We are saving the planet by not allowing you to use those chemicals here to manufacture those parts. Just send them to Mexico or China and all will be fine. The oceans and atmosphere are kinda sorta all connected dumbasses.. And fuck unions. Just lik democrats, What do they actually contribute too besides themselves?

Going through all our vendors and seeing where they are at inventory wise today. Have a lot of items that come from Germany and Italy.

We are about to find out how difficult it is going to be.

I'm not running a port, but this will directly impact some of the things we do daily.

To me this is exactly what would push me over the top to automate anything and everything I could.

That crippling comment can absolutely back fire and I think it will over time.

Should we ban the Cotten gin? How about the electric dishwasher? Perhaps we should ban engines in ships so we can employ traditional rowers. What an asshat.

Last time this came up, the LAS wanted to ban electronic tracking of containers because it would put the guy marking containers with chalk our of a $200K/year job.

50% pay increase and 3x my retirement.

Shooting that down Is greed. They already make damn good money.
