The wife’s been wanting to go for years so we’re starting off today. Provo tomorrow, 2 days with golf in Casper, 3 days in Rapid City with golf one day then back through Colorado with a stay in Moab at some lodge on the river. Each leg is around 6 hours. This should be a good one.

I went with my grandparents when I was 12. Road trip from CA to their farm in SE South Dakota. We ate cheddar cheese and peanut butter sandwiches and drank Mountain Dew. The crazy horse monument is also worth the stop which is nearby Mount Rushmore.

The badlands are awesome.

Enjoy your trip!

Fishing in some of those cold small lakes can be exciting. Pack a fishing pole. 😉

Visit Custer State Park near Custer SD, Wind Cave NP is great if you like cave tours. The Crazy Horse center is amazing, the craving is still ongoing but the Museum is very good. Visit the towns of Custer and eat at the burger joint it is world famous.
Also visit Leeds SD and stop at the Livernois National Laboratory center. They built a large underground test center in the gold mine and very cool!
Have visited the Black Hills 4 times and it is one of my favorite areas to visit.

Negative, hotels
Sold the Havasu place and hoping to take a similar journey, in a similar manner, neither one of us has seen that part of the country.
Thanks for sharing and if there's any notable places to stay or avoid, please mention it. 👍

Go to Keystone for a few drinks after Rushmore. Its right there. The Red Garter Saloon. Make sure to grab a few coozy cups as well. Those friggin things you put on your cans. During Sturgis its great to sit on the covered patio and watch all the bikes and people

The pigtail road, needles hwy, sylvan lake, custer park, and deadwood are an absolute must.

Those two roads are some of the best scenic drives in the country. They are all within an hour or so of Rushmore.

Need tickets in advance or can you find someone day of?
No. There is side table off the main floor and very discreet. They sell trips to the top as a donation and kids under 11 or 12 were free.
There was only 6 of us in our group and 4 was our family. I would skip the tours they sell in the lines when you enter the face trip was so much better.

During covid was the best, there was absolutely no one there compared to other trips. We happened to see an implosion at Crazy Horse.

@Joker fact check me on this while you are there but I remember reading something in the literature at Crazy Horse that it will take 200 years to complete it? I just remember whatever amount of time it was it amazed me.

EDIT: Googled it. Unknown amount of time let to finish.

Found this Ayres bridge created by nature on the way to South Dakota.
You seem to be making plenty of stops at interesting sites along this journey. Did you spent time researching the route and attractions prior to your departure, then pre-book rooms, or just winging it as you go ?

We pre booked everything with regards to rooms. For the most part , everything else we just saw signs along the highway advertising monuments and we pulled in.
Everywhere we’ve gone has been spectacular and really well kept.
