I was looking at these. There were 2 plans, an unlimited use, and 50gb(?) per month with the option to pay for more. I couldn't find the cost for extra data, and also had no clue how much we use. Our service sucks here, but it's cheap. I also thought it would be great to take back and forth to the river pad if we start going again.

Spectrum is the only hardline solution in my area. It’s just cable modem, no fiber available. They absolutely suck ass, and act like they’re the only game in town.

I really need a reliable and fast upgrade. We have like 50 connected devices, and Mrs Pronstar and I both WFH and are often on video calls all day.

Believe it or now, this causes problems for our GIGABIT internet because our upload speeds are just 40mbps, and I often don’t even see that.

Is latency and uplod speeds good with Starkink? How about large file uploads and/or multiple video conferencing?

extra data (at least for my mini 50gb plan) is rated at a $1 a GB.

So its $50 for the first 50gb, and $1 per extra after that. Being able to turn the plan off is what drew me in.

Question for the folks that are in the know about starlink, would we be able to get a good signal through a plate glass window or do these have to be set up outside? we were up in Tahoe for a week and our room was top floor clear sight line of the sky through giant plate glass windows and on the way home last night I was thinking if this would work vs using my hotspot on my phone for a few hours every morning for the market when needed on trips basically when the phone service may not be there or spotty? I read the setup paperwork but it did not say anything about glass only obstructions like trees, buildings etc..

My understanding of Starlink is the antenna has to be outside with a clear view of the sky.

It’s not like HughesNet which points in a single direction. With the Starlink constellation the dish is moving around adjusting to satellites as they move around and come into range and then transferring to new satellites as the other ones leave its field of view.

50 GB per month?
I have days that I use over 50GB.
My avg use for the last 3 months is shown below.
we have COX and pay 125.00 per month for 1280 GB
And we try to conserve. Is this normal?

The gigabyte usage or whatever the hell it is is what scares me, have no idea what my usage is.

I am tempted to try it because I’m getting pretty fed up with Suddenloss/Optimum.
Patiently waiting for Allo for now.

I don’t understand why I use so much data.
1 streaming tv about 8 hrs per day.
2 iPhones. 1 iPad. And some ring cameras.

I am a relatively heavy user, I have been using 500 to 900 a month the last few months.

"streaming" HD video will use a lot of data.

The alternative internet services (cellular, satellite, etc.) aren't designed to be used as your main source (yet anyway, in my opinion. Not affordable anyway)

They are great for places that don't have "high speed wired" service. But you have to "pay to play"...

Phone apps are notorious for running in the background and consuming data.

Check out some of the vids on how to reduce data useage, Here’s one vid

Latency is typically 40ms. But Starlink is more for rural areas. Lately with residential plans we typically see 200-300Meg down 14-20 up. These speeds vary by area.

Starlink will work through most glass or plastic, but will reduce signal. And still needs a clear view, generally northwest on the west coast.
The older dish only moved to align during setup, not constantly. The current dish does not move. Line it up for best coverage and tighten it up. Starlink dishes are phased array antennas “they have 1200+ little antennas in the dish aimed and controlled by microchips. You can hear them constantly when near the dish. Probably why they use a bit of power….

I’m hesitant about poking a hole in my stucco or roof.
will the Starlink still work good if I put the router on my covered patio right outside my family room?

I think it would. I know ours in the house will get out of the house with ease.

After your post I went and looked at what our usage is.
Two iPhones
One iPad
One TV very occasional use though.

This was our highest use in the last twelve months.

Son of a bitch. I think there is something wrong with my system.
So I ripped out my linksys router this morning and started using my Cox.
But I also learned my fire sticks in the unused rooms still draw Wi-Fi.
I also found 4 smart switches that are used for patio lights and waterfall. And my sleep number beds. And my remote weather station.
but still, that stuff shouldn’t be using much.
I’m hoping it’s the 19 year old linksy. I’ll know for sure tomorrow.
