I see an rising amount of California license plates and they scratch off the reflective background around the numbers don't have a pic handy but see more and more of these plates and wondered what is the real purpose?

Obviously its harder to see or make out the numbers when dark but is it mainly for that reason or traffic cameras not quite sure why or what this is really about.

Yep that's a daily occurrence on my commute, just wondered what the deal with the plate is I thought they removed most red light cameras so whats the purpose?
On a side note the other day at the gas station I was behind a girl and her plate was all scratched up like that and I wanted to ask her about it but she was just finishing up as I was about to get out to approach her and I didn't want to freak her out.

On the front plate of my 2005 Chevy the white reflective paint just peeled off over the years. I didn't remove it myself. It looks like shit.

I wonder if anyone does it on purpose or it is just cheap material.

The reflective clear coat is deteriorating. Happening on my 2001 mustang plates. The state made a big batch of plates with the bad clear.

Before I moved out here to Az, had a Berdoo sheriff light me up in Needles. My reflective coating being flaked off made it hard for him to see my plate. After 250k on the truck it just did it on it's own...are the people you see like that old shit boxes, or do they really scrape it now? Mine was just age and abuse, truck got miles....

My guess it is due to drive thru car washes. Not that any of my vehicles have had the issue as I would never commit such an insane act but the cars I see with such plates definitely are not washed by hand.

Ahhh... I was just filled in on the blue and yellow equal sign. Those have to be illegal, I could foresee a few "profiling" claims coming from this display after a ticket is issued.

Maybe make the auto plate readers on patrol cars not be able to read the plate?

There's a bunch of worn out looking plates in Arizona, but that's because you keep your plates. You can get new plates, but for some reason, some people seem to think it's cool to have worn out plates.

I see some that are scraped and then I see some that are newer vehicles like maybe a year or so old so I wonder if its the auto readers on the cop cars or the toll road deal certainly is intentional I'll try to snap a pic when I see the next one.

In AZ people keep their license plates and their drivers license photos from 16 to 65 years old.

You're right on the money. Most shitbags think they're being slick by removing the reflective coating, making their plates harder to read. In reality it really doesn't matter.

OR, people do it to avoid fees from traffic cameras, i.e. toll roads, red light cameras, and the like. Granted, some really just wear out after time (and you can tell which ones those are), but it's the responsibility of the owner of the vehicle to "maintain" them; meaning trade them in if the coating comes off.

Citeable violations regarding license plates:

5201(a) CVC - shall be maintained in a condition so as to be clearly legible.

5201.1(b) CVC - A person shall not operate a vehicle with a product or device that obscures, or is intended to obscure, the reading or recognition of a license plate by visual means, or by an electronic device.

Laser guns emit a laser beam, which is bounced off a flat, perpendicular, metallic, reflective surface on your vehicle. This specially designed cover works to absorb and diffuse the incoming laser beam. Significantly shortens the effective distance of laser guns. Note: Buyer assumes all responsibility for using this product in compliance with local motor vehicle codes.

Besides the license plate special stealth coatings the one thing that bugs me is no license plate at all. I've seen some new temporary Ca. paper plates lately, maybe the DMV is finally trying to put an end to no license plates...

New law requires those this year.
