The idiot engineers for the RZR 2018 XP1000 sure designed the oil filter setup to be a guaranteed mess when you change the oil and filter. Anyone come up with a way to change the filter without the mess? The filter is on the front "top half" of the engine pointed at a down angle.

Same engineers as mercury marine? My factory remote filter setup puts the filter up-side-down

Upside down filters drain OK when you punch a hole in 'em.

Cut a used one open some time and see where you need to punch the hole and how long of a tool you need to unseat the anti-drainback valve (rubber or silicone thing that seals against the holes in the tapping plate)...do this and the filter will be dry in a couple minutes and no mess when you unscrew it.

My daughters Subaru Crosstrek has an upside down filter.

I used to think Japanese engineering was the best until I saw that.

My F 150 has it horizontal, but there's a built in drip tray.

Maybe just an elbow fitting and correct specialty parts and it could mounted in a better spot??

It is. Punch it before you drain the oil and usually no more than a couple drips when you’re ready to unscrew it…or just use a Fram or Pentius filter with shitty rubber anti-drain back valves that don’t seal for shit.

Probably the sames as my 2015.
It's stupid. I just stuff some rags under the filter the best I can.

Can also break it loose and put a plastic back around it and then drop it into the bag.

Simple operation, no need to punch a hole.

Back the filter off just slightly until the seal just barely backs off the mating flange. I’m talking a crack just to get air in there. You’ll just be able to jiggle the filter. If it is quiet you might even hear the air rush in. Go do something else for 5 mins and come back and remove the filter. It will be dry and not spill a drop.

Cram an old T shirt in there under the filter first for insurance.

the filter on a rzr sits in a recess in the block......almost impossible to get anything in there to absorb the oil as you spin it off

I have the same car. A T shirt or piece of shirt fits in under the filter between it and the cast in oil collector on the block. Might be easier to do from the side than the access hatch in the back seat.

Let it sit over night
Remove filter
No oil mess
I also change all my oils cold.
Get's more oil and sediment out while it's thinner

So I guess I’m old school or not thinking this through all the way?

I was taught to put oil in the filter before installing it.
How does one do that on a horizontal or upside down filter?
