Spark arrestor vs k&n

Saw this question on FB and wondered what everyone runs! Pros and cons. I run a spark arrestor that came with the motor. Any benefits if changing? Or benefits of a different spark arrestor?

502. Rebuilt it last year. Roller motor has about 515hp.

Looks is the only thing really both will flow similarly but...... just saying.

What I’ve read since there’s much less dust etc on the water that you do oil but very very lightly.

No matter where you are there is always dust in the air !!!!!!

Call K&N and get a filter that flows the correct CFM for your carb and engine.
The last time I looked on their site CFM flow rates were not listed.
Call K&N and ask to speak to one of their engineers for the CFM flow ratings of their filters.
For instance, if you have an 850 CFM carburetor you want a filter that flows at least 850 CFM.
I have an 850 double pumper feeding my 750HP stroked 492 BBC and my K&N filter flows more than 1,000 CFM.
Remember,
No matter if you are towing or boating on the water there is always dust in the air.

Any filter can flow whatever CFM you want. As long as you have enough power pulling the air and the filter is made to withstand that pressure. ;-)

Yep, kinda dangerous in a boat, especially in a closed engine compartment. But a spark arrester is hardly going to filter anything.

Mine looks like one of those on the link you posted. Seems like it sucks plenty of cfm through it. Being under the hatch I’m not as concerned about dirt. So far not seeing a benefit for the k&n

What about in a closed hatch? The spark arrestor on my boat sounds like it could suck a golf ball through a garden hose.

It isn't dangerous, that is what it was designed for, to somewhat contain an underhatch fire/backfire from the intake that would likely catch a filter on fire. Problem is they don't filter for shit, maybe some good size rocks. :)

Now imagine a couple towels/flip flops/anchors/bouys with some sand on them, all dried off in the desert heat and a nice WOT blast across the lake.....

That may well be, however, dust will find it's way inside the engine. Dust is silica but mutch finer than sand which is silica and very abrasive.
Do what you want and I hope your engine lasts.
I'm just a dumb old retired air traffic controller but have learned to pay attention over the years.

Even in a closed hatch set up the air going through the carburetor and into your engine has to come from outside the closed engine compartment.
Golf balls don't destroy engines. Dirty oil and unfiltered air shorten the lives of engines.;)

If it's US Coast Guard approved I'd say run the K&N. I find all kinds of gunk in my flame arrestor. My guess it's dust gathered in the engine compartment mostly from towing and storage. But it would be great to have an actual filter over the arrestor.

There were a bunch of back to back flame arrestor tests done on OSO and believe it or not the bone stock Merc 454/502 Mag EFI/MP flame arrestor made the most power. Most others were significantly worse.

Well, I would say that flame arrestor is not providing filtered air into your carburetor and engine.
Remember, a lot of boat manufacturers were putting stuff on engines just to make them Coast Guard compliant.
What the fuck does the Coast Guard know about engine efficiency, they are just another bureaucracy.
Make sure your engine is tuned properly, timing is set correctly, carburetor is tuned, and fuel lines are in good condition.
And let your engine breath clean air.
Sorry if I ruffled your feathers Boat Cop.
Lack of maintenance and negligence is normally the cause of boat fires.
HD out.
