I turn that 110lbs of billet plate into 19lbs of backflippinstraighthurtyourselfinthesurf, ifyouarentcareful, billet case to house a 16mm (84mm total)stroker crankshaft.

I designed this myself in 2007 or 08.

Took me three months of banging on it 12 hours a day 6-7 days a week, I ruined two of the 5 sets of material I originally started with. :)

Been doing nothing but watching machining videos in my spare time the last few weeks.. LOL I think I'm addicted and want to learn this shit. I know the CAD part will be the easiest for me since I used to be pretty damn good at 3dsmax, the CAM part seems tougher, and actually learning to machine precisely seems the toughest. Might enroll in a local college to get the basics.

Cerritos College has a machine shop program. My friend has hired a few from there.

BipolarMilfy, I have offered you a job, you decline and tell me the commute would be tough and the bovines would miss you.

IMA teach you how to be a machinist and you can teach me how to raise cows and horses. :)

Starting the second operation on all the parts today, this is where the majority of material gets cut off, so they will start to take shape .

From memory, I believe each part runs for about three hours.

Nice!

As a young man I took a one year, 900 hour machine shop class at a vocational school.
Then worked for 9 years at a performance engine machine shop. (under Bob Hayes for about 5 of those years)
That experience is beneficial in almost all aspects of what I do as a Directional Driller and when working on boats or anything else.

Even if one has no intention of being "a machinist", the schooling is invaluable in so many other ways.

Beautiful works of art. Are your cases used in Dasa's 1200's?

Okay, I asked because we have a Dasa 1000 (Yamaha case) in our ski now, but are thinking of steeping up to a 1200 in our next ski. Who uses your cases and builds engines?

Eric from TPE does. I believe he builds a superior cylinder with loop transfers and nicasil cylinders, and it is lighter than the billets.

http://www.true-performance.net/

I would call him a friend as well.

If you want, send me your name and I can see if I can help out if you go for it.

Depending on what you are looking for, we are working on a project now with a different style of cylinder. :)

Did you ever pick up a bar-feeder?

No not yet.

Don't have room in the shop just yet with the Dart here.

Been shopping for work to need one though. :) At the current time the bar feeder deal was more of nice to have rather than need to have.

Thoughts on throwing something like this in the garage to learn on? Weak and slow for sure, but seems to be able to do everything the fancier machines can do.. https://orangecounty.craigslist.org/tls/d/tormach-pcnc-series-cnc/6230182393.html

I have some thoughts on that....

A couple off the top of my head....

Id rather stay away from a PC based machine. I am sure I will get dogpiled on though.

My main concern would be who works on that machine when something happens to it?

One service call could eat up some jing.

Thanks, makes sense. OK sorry I don't want to derail the thread, I will ask my questions separately. Awesome parts BTW. I love seeing them

No sweat doooood. Ask away. I am happy to help in this thread or anywhere.

Do you have a budget? What are your long term goals for the machine? I would be happy to put eyes on anything you are interested in and even help you out getting it hooked up and some instructions if you need it to learn some basics.

I really think if you are ready to spend 15k you could find a decent used Haas mini or vf1 you would have a modern, common mill. I'll look tomorrow and see what is out there.

Thanks you da man! I'm not 100% ready yet, just seeing what I'd be looking at. I'm thinking it may be best to learn how to crash a haas here than on my own dime lol http://cms.cerritos.edu/mtt/

Also, the goal would be to have an engaging hobby that would turn profitable once I learn how to make precise parts that can be sold.

I sit in front of a computer all day and NEED some hands-on and fulfilling stuff to do.

Enjoy what you do, and you never work a day in your life. :)

I see 12-14 hour 7 days a week in your future. :)
