So who’s the solar go to? I used Palomar about 10 yrs ago. They did a kit for me and I did the install but I believe that was a 1 off deal. Any recommendations? And yes I called Palomar and the lady said we don’t do that.

They did 2 kits. I would call them and see what is the good stuff to buy and just search for it in the internet.

Northern Arizona Wind and Sun https://www.solar-electric.com

I can give you a couple names to call if they don't have what you are after.

Supply chain is extremely tight in the industry right now, not a lot of companies are going to be letting go of materials to make DIY kits for that reason.

Sorry, I just dont have the time available to manage the DIY deals anymore. I didnt make any money but I figured it didnt really cost me either. I used to do it for RDP members who were 1 - out of our area, and 2 - capable contractor types. But even then they required oversight and multiple calls clarifying install issues. In addition, Enphase is making it harder and harder for DIY commissioning.

As Ace said, all quality components are commited to installers like us, ie its tough for you to find a source of quality materials. That said non chinese panels like Panasonic or Qcell and Enphase is my only recommendation. Wish I had better news.

surprised there are not more diy solar suppliers out there. The installations are pretty simple.

A competent contractor type can certainly do the install, but its the plans, permitting and utility agreements that take expertise and frankly none of the DIY people have paid for that service even though I did it for them. I have a team of people who smoothly move the projects through the various bureaucracies, an individual would have one hell of a time doing it on their own. I'm sorry that we cant help you with your project.

So what’s the go to panel and micro inverter? Definitely want an all black panel. I have room for 2 rows of 7 panels 24’x15’ useable space. South/west exposure. Is enphase still the go to?

It appears finding panels will be difficult. Go solar has bluesun panels. I’m guessing China

It's very difficult getting enphase right now unless you are already a buyer. You may find micro inverters but combiners are a needle in a haystack right now.

Panels it’s take whatever you can get right now unless you buy from an end installer. There is a reason that install companies are advertising using terms like tier1 panels, or just wattage ranges. In many cases they don’t know what they will have month to month unless they are a major player/buyer.

Passage of the IRA is increasing demand in a severely supply constrained industry. I could go a lot more into this but it essentially means the little guy or one off self installer isn’t getting product needed for primary buyers right now through traditional channels.

If everything is on the same pitch, in one big array with no shading issues there is no reason to install enphase…a simple string type inverter is all you need. Those are much easier to get for a one off install, vs a product like enphase.

I can get you the product, I just am not able to do the plans for you. My guess is Ace can source you product as well. Where do you want to pick it up, Escondido or Phoenix?
I will sell you Panasonic and Enphase, your issue will be plans and commissioning.

Wow, that’s awesome of you. Thanks for the offer. I’m about 500miles from Escondido. I’ll need to look into the drawing part of it. I have a complete set of drawings including survey from my addition I did a few yrs ago. My issue is the engineering (electrical/structural) requirements for the installation. I pre wired 2 circuits in the panel with the wiring to the roof. Last time I did solar PG&E was the biggest hurdle. Are the Panasonic 400 panels all black( no silver) the recommended panel? Which enphase microinverter would you recommend?

I’m trying to remember but what’s the combiner? Is that the wire harness that the inverters plug into?

The 400w Panasonics have a white backsheet. Panasonic Panels typically use the Panasonic Branded Enphase model tied to it. It will be in the Iq8 line. If Andy can help you on material that likely would be your best route. I can give you some direction (rep to contact) otherwise, but couldn't arrange it directly (I do finance not materials for our company).

I don’t remember that in my existing system. I remembered there being 2 cables (1 from each set of panels)that ran into a j box in my attic where I ran 2 10/2 Romex back to 2 2 pole breakers
in a ten year old system you likely wouldn't have had one. They aren't an absolute requirement but will cut your tie in time and headache down a lot.

No that's Q cable.

I had an envoy but it shit the bed.
There are alternative options but you would need to source an envoy. You will need some other parts as well for an enphase system.

See and down the rabbit hole we go, you need someone to design it, permit it, and advise how to process. But if you keep asking maybe I will do it for free. 1 - I dont sell the 400's I have 360s today, all black, no they dont use special enphase inverters but here I go designing it for you. 2 - 10 years ago and today the systems are entirely different. You wont think so because anyone can do this, but you will need our support to do the project and its just not what we do. We can do the install in less time than it takes to explain to you how to do it. Not trying to be a jerk, but can you try to see from my side. In the time Im writing this I have 10 contracts on my desk to review for people that respect our expertise to the point that they want to pay us to do their job.

You’re a business. I don’t expect anything for free. I was simply asking questions and I appreciate the fact that you took the time out of your day to answer a few of them. I like to understand how things work. One of my favorite things about this forum is the wealth of knowledge amongst everyone.

That's why they do walk up door to door sales. 😉
Your jaw would drop if you knew what some of those D2D solar guys make a year…

In a different part of my career I knocked thousands of doors, it’s a lot of why I have zero fear of public speaking etc. that experience makes me very effective in my day job…which is still in the solar industry.

I just got quoted 61k with a 18k tax credit for 45 panels. It didn't pencil out. I'll most likely build my own system at a later date. I've been in the new house since May so far my biggest bill was $390. But I do want solar, it just has to pencil out.

sounds like a crazy high quote, they either were trying to hit a home run or using financing with a 20+% fee.

Building it it pretty easy other than the inverter companies make it very difficult to commission a new install.

It's the permitting process and paperwork thats tough to get sign off on your own.

Its just one of those things where you decide whether to overpay up front,
- or pay and re-do as you go while you struggle to get it legitimized.

I decided to pay up front.

Going to PM you who to call locally, make sure you tell him you know me...hes one of my distribution clients...and will be a much much better deal than that.

There is a d2d sales only company hitting Havasu hard right now throwing out stupid numbers. They went as far as sending cease and desist letters to local installers about "talking about them"
