Caught me a bit off guard. We don't talk a whole lot, maybe once or twice a month? Not usually in the evenings...

He was calling to fill me in on his "exciting" weekend. The story starts with a colonoscopy, on St. Patrick's day. Well, he said they knocked him out for his 10am probing, but woke up spacey, and then full panic. He was surrounded by doctors and nurses that were not there before, and was intubated!

It seems he either "aspirated fluid" while under, or had fluid in his lungs previous. His 02 dropped to 50% while under, and they played hell getting it up to anything decent.

They moved him to ER, 2 liters (?) of oxygen, steroids and some other stuff, and got it in the 70's. He spent the weekend in the hospital. He was released this morning, different inhaler (apparently he's had an inhaler the past year) and is on steroids and antibiotics.

I'm really happy he's doing good. A little pissed his wife didn't call, text or FB message my wife even. Pretty scary.

He did not find humor in the comment I made about getting something shoved in both ends😉
His throat is still a little sore, but he was happy to finally get to come home and make corned beef.
Getting older sucks!

That sucks man and a part of my job I hate. Crazy how someone is fine one minute and next I’m putting them on a vent. Glad he’s ok, hope he gets well quick. I never want to wake up intubated 🤦‍♂️

Glad your brother is OK. Not saying this is what happened but it is a great reminder of why doctors order no food or drink several hours before anesthesia.
He had mentioned that he hadn't eaten in two days. At that point, I'd be looking at the docs like cartoon hamburgers. I think on that note he was good.

When I kind of came to after my big surgery, I was on a vent. Scared the hell out of me, and not very comfortable. In my case, they put me under, and I kept going. They were so worried about my neck, nobody had noticed a few ribs piercing one lung. I guess the fluid/ collapsed lung really effects how the body deals with anesthetic. In my case, 02 dropped severely, and I flatlined before they started the surgery. They spent a while getting me up and running. The surgery ended up being 13 1/2 hours.

I'm hoping my brother didn't have fluid in his lungs before they put him under. Sounds like there was a bunch of "We believe..." but no solid answers. My brother never smoked or worked with chemicals or such, but has had covid twice.

I don't know, scary stuff...

I have my first Colonoscopy/Endoscopy scheduled in May. I am scared shitless, and this doesn't help! I have never been put under before, and am a wreck that something like this will happen.

Damn It! LOL

Sorry Pal .... but the scared shitless comment made me laugh.
I've had 5 or 6 preventative colonoscopies starting about 1990 due family cancer risk.
It's a piece of cake. The worst part by f.a.r. is the prep that makes you shitless 🤣.

I’ve had 3 colonoscopies, and had no problems from the anesthesia. After I wake up from Propofol, it feels like the nest 8 hours of sleep ever, and it’s actually been about an hour. I almost look forward to the next one. 😂

Just had mine done a few weeks ago. The prep wasn't as bad as I thought it would be but he did prescribe the Clenpiq drink which is 2 bottles of 8oz each in place of the larger jugs. Word of caution make sure to have baby wipes handy as you'll wipe your ass raw, ask me how I know. Procedure was strait forward and really the only thing that I was worried about was if they would find anything out of the ordinary (cancer) as my initial stool test back in Nov 2022 had traces of blood in it. All good in the end with some polyps removed.
You'll be fine...

That’s crazy man, most likely your issues were from the collapsed lung. I’m sure you had a chest tube until that resolved. That was your cause of the hypoxia for sure. Easy fix with the right Dr. Biggest issue with aspiration is sepsis which is another fun deal. I’m sure he will be fine, glad you are too.

Don't stress too much, Chris. It isn't as bad as it sounds, and, truly, once you do the prep and are on your way to the doc's place your work is done.
I have had 6 or 8 of them. The anesthesia will be like taking a nap.
Second one, when I was 48...they found a little deal that was cancer, but he got it all with the scope. Strong probability having that procedure saved my life. i got it a bit early due to family history.
They scoped me every 6 months for 2 years after that little deal.

nothing to fear... just gets a little weird when the male nurse shaves your balls.....
I had a male nurse catheterize me once. I made some smart-ass comment about it being the first time a man had been there. I think he was gay and was offended. 😂. He got even with me though, because when he removed it, I think he made it hurt more than necessary. 🤦‍♂️

He probably won’t be getting one of those…

You're going be fine. I just had my second one done a couple of weeks ago. Use Sprite instead of water in the bottle. It's doesn't taste so bad that way!

Monkeys bro had a preexisting condition of some sort from what he posted here.

Never heard of a dude being split roasted before. Learn something new every day. 👍🏼😁

I just did my first about a month ago. The prep sucks for sure but it wasn’t as bad as I thought it was going to be. I did the 2 8 oz bottle of magnesium citrate versus the gallon option. I mixed it with lime LaCroix, which made it taste better. Drank beef broth, jello and lots of liquids 24 hours ahead of the treatment…broth actually wasn’t too bad.

I wouldn’t want to do it again but it wasn’t the end of the world, Don’t have to worry about it for another 10 years now at least.

Enjoy the buzz and don't fall for that shit when the anesthesiologist tries to spark up a conversation. They just want to see you pass out mid sentence.

Here's my story on that subject: I'm stuck on stupid, just wheeled into the ER, been in a ditch fukerd up for 2 days. I don't think I was on meds yet, but in and out of clarity and feeling stoned...

I feel something going on down there. I open my eyes, and it's a pretty cute blonde (female). Thinking to myself "Well now, this isn't all bad. Maybe I'm dead?"

Then she goes all roto-rooter😳
I either blacked out again, or tried to suppress the remainder of that memory🤣

That happened to me when I had my wisdom teeth removed in high school.

Sodium Pentothal is the shit!!! 💞💞💞
My oral surgeon didn't but me under! Scheduled me for 4pm, to yank all 4. Novacains one corner, I tell him I'm not numb. He says "You only think you aren't numb", and proceeds to stab my gumbs with a scalpel.
I bent the armrest, cussed and spit blood everywhere...looked like a slasher film!
"Wow, I guess you weren't numb."
No shit!
Got out of there at 7:30. By the time I got home, I looked like stoned "fat Elvis", a chipmunk with sideburns.

had both several years ago both were very easy little or no discomfort, the guy told me when i was being, prepped dont worry the worst part was drinking the kool aid and he was right I was awake and was actually able to view the colonoscopy on the monitor. the downside was all showed clear but later they found I had a growth in my small intestine, they tried both again but could not get to where it was with scope did it with ct scan, that is why I say keep doing the stool samples even with the scopes, they had stopped sending them to me becuase of my age, had I been doing the stool checks the problem probably would have been found earlier and saved me a ton of grief, but as i said the scopes should be easy, and yes before I had them done I was dreading it. sorry for the long winded post but if I can help anyone out allways good with that
