The San Diego charter sportfishing boat, the Jig Strike, reportedly hit a submerged object near the Cortez Bank (about 100 nm west of SD) and sank yesterday. All passengers and crew were saved. Reports indicate the Legend, another SD based charter boat rescued all. No easy task. Outstanding work by the captains and crews of the Jig Strike and the Legend.

That’s tough to watch. Family owned operation. Looks like the boat was well maintained. For those who may not realize, these boats must go through a rigorous USCG annual inspection, which includes periodic bottom/hull inspections. Fortunately this occurred in daylight and good sea conditions.

A lot of these are wooden boats…couple layers of plywood. No way they can deal with hitting a submerged container. The captain/crew kicked ass here, and that’s the end of it.

No injuries or casualties. Thats a win.

Dang! When I heard submerged object, I was thinking of a log or something similar. Hitting a container suspended under the surface must have been like pounding into a reef, especially if they were in transit to the fishing grounds.

That’s one reason I’m scared of the ocean…never know what’s below the surface.

I know the guy that got the port of LA 2 new pilot boats about 15 years ago…in the first week, one of ‘em hit a wood piling that was submerged and floating a few feet under, wrecking the prop shafts. That same week, the other one ran over a line which pulled the counter rotating screws together and …wrecked the prop shafts, props, and transmissions.

Both boats ran 3 knots faster after everything was fixed than they did when they were new, but that’s beside the point.

These were steel hull boats….and I can’t afford one of those.

At the river, worst thing I’ve ever hit was a refrigerator…and it was shallow enough where I can stand up and drag the fridge and the jet ski to shore.

Looks like it struck something in the water with that much damage. Good thing there were boats nearby.
