It’s orange, no rattle, I put it in the wood pile. Edit, just looked him up, a Western Ground Snake, harmless.

Yep, cool snake. Ive seen them stand up like a cobra to look over bushes before rushing a covey of baby quail. They can be lightening fast.

I've had a couple of black racers show up. Lightening fast is almost an understatement, and I can't help but think, how glad I am Rattlers don't travel that fast
I've also read that on the Friendly vs Bad Attitude scale, they're right at the top of the Bad Attitude scale.
Article seemed to imply, not if the cranky bastards will bite you, just what to expect when they do. I'm not fast enough to catch one to test the theory regardless.

You're to be commended for not panicking like a little girl and killing it. Snakes do good work, capturing rodents and insects.

Speaking of black racers, that was the first snake I caught when I was a kid. I was six years old. My Mom wasn't impressed by the capture.

She had to put up with my animal escapades in childhood. A good example was the time my family was camping on the Conejos River in southern Colorado. I was around seven years old. We stopped at a gas station, and after the car was serviced, I was nowhere to be found.

My Mom found me behind the gas station, petting a mountain lion between the bars of its cage. For some reason she caused quite a commotion, grabbing my arm and marching me back to the car.

😁

We had a 4-5 foot red racer in the back yard. It was interesting to watch it move along and then raise its head and look around. Unfortunately for him, we have quite a few mocking birds. They dive bombed him like crazy. He actually hid in a rodent poison bin and then took off like a shot as the birds kept nailing him. A pic below.

Cheers, Steve
