So my sons 5th birthday is coming up, and we are doing the usual bounce house and shit like that.. With anything though I'm concerned about potential winds so we might have to take his get together inside. So I started thinking what would be fun for a bunch of 4-8 year olds? Slot cars!

So I was thinking about setting up a couple of tracks and a white board on an easel and letting them "race" it out with tournament of champions kinda deal..

So I want to buy two large slot car tracks so 4 kids can race at a time.

When I was a kid TYCO pretty much made the slot car tracks.. I do'nt even think they make them anymore.

Which ones are the good ones? 5th birthday is a milestone in life so I want it to be nice.. That said this isn't going to be a permanent fixture in my house hold so I don't need the 3,000.00 track best of the best shit.. I'd expect they are going to get pretty thrashed during the party.

Any suggestions?

I'd just fleabay a few full tracks then assemble together. I might be wrong but I kind of remember a tyco 4 lane track as well?

I used to break out the track at parties sometimes, it's funny as shit...the girls always end up taking it over haha! :thumbsup :D

All sorts on fleabay : https://www.ebay.com/itm/Tyco-HO-Ra...602450?hash=item4b2aeb2bd2:g:HfAAAOSwLJ9Z7TUR

Yep they made a 4 lane one: https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_fr...+tracks.TRS0&_nkw=tyco+4+lane+tracks&_sacat=0

I have an off brand track, 2 crappy cars and one good car. I don't set it up very often but it is a blast when I do.

Man that brings back some memories. :thumbsup We also had a couple of the TCR slotless race tracks, was pretty cool being able to switch lanes. :p I think that racetrack stuff is still boxed up at my parents old place, doubt it's any good anymore. Makes me wanna go check though, lol. :D

I have been looking for these for awhile now and I finally found one in a store. I went to Toys R Us last weekend and picked up the new hotwheels version. It's not nice by any means but it works and he thinks its cool.

https://www.toysrus.com/product?pro...ZsBn1k6oVwhP0e2lidIcnmVZcPGHqs9hoCtp8QAvD_BwE

This is the one that I want as soon as the hotwheels one breaks its $$$ though and requires a smart phone.

Sometimes I miss the simple toys we had growing up.

Man those were great. Used to buy more cars and "tune" them. Got more into drag racing and stretched track across the living room running them flat out into a pillow. We had hours of fun.:skull

When a couple shops opened up tracks with the bigger cars, we upgraded and raced there as often as possible. Fun times indeed.

I have a vintage revelle monte carlo track. There are some cheapo sets that take batteries and are 1(32 scale.
There is a commercial tra k in SCV with 3 tracks. ( I know that doesnt help you though) and they do parties.

My only problem is I'm short on time, and I'm concerned I"ll buy some old one and it won't work...

What is the modern day tyco track? 80-120 bucks? Throttle control only and no fucking phone apps!! LOL

Not trying to start a debate old school vs. new school - I personally Love Slot Cars!!

Just wondering if anyone has had a chance to checkout the Anki Overdrive Set?
https://www.anki.com/en-us/overdrive

I just watched their video.. I'm not even sure you drive that? I think it's more of a you push go kinda deal?

You need a damn phone to make it work?

Plus the price.. holy shit balls!

I actually know a guy who takes portable, large scale tracks to the fair and such. He also builds custom tracks. I will get you his number if you think you might want to talk to him, not sure if he would be affordable or what.

There is a nice one in a guy's garage in Havasu that I visited one time, but between the lack of power on his track, and rules about tires and no traction compound, I didn't go back. I was pretty heavily into 1/24 scale slots in CA a number of years back.

There is a "pro style track" in Havasu, near Daytona and McCulloch . (El toro)

Alan built the track in his garage and has plenty of controllers and cars for many young and old racers to use .

At one time he offered to sell it to me. Just think of the RDP club meetings Dave could hold. He did increase power after the time I was there, and the track is really very nicely built, fits in his standard double car garage, 8 lanes.

Perfect for little ones learning, and then flip the switch for the adults after the kids pass out! :thumbsup

It is bad ass. I bought one for my brother and when he came to visit with his kids. We were up until 3:30 in the morning, just him and I.

Oh, it appreciating in value. I bought it for $113.00 new 4 yrs. ago.

I was standing in Toys R Us one time looking at RC Cars. This dad walks up next to me and says "You know the best part about being a dad?" I laughingly respond with a "no what?" "You can buy all the toys that you always wanted as a kid." He then grabs a giant remote control monster truck and puts it in his cart and walks off. Truer words have never been spoken. Buy the kid the 4 laner.

This is the way to go!!!! Rent the track time and the cars the kids will have a ball. The kids faces will be priceless!!!! Friend of mine was really into this when he was a kid and had a trick controller with a capacitor in it. :D When someone would whip out they would shut the track off to put the car back in the groove his would go about 10 feet further than everybody else's.:D:D He had a couple of other tricks too!!!:tbi

We just purchased one. :) And I agree, I'm going to have a ton of fun racing with my kids.. It will probably be permanently setup in my garage. :D

Sounds like fun. What time is the party Dave? I'll bring ice cream and root beer.

Daniel's birthday is tomorrow.. but party is Sunday. So far like 16-20 kids coming plus parents.. Bring real deal ice cream and A&W and I'll race you for the bill.. [emoji6]

I spent the last four or five hours setting this god damn thing up.. "Buy the kid the four lane" he says.. I never wanted knee pads in my life before tonight. (it was your closing line is why I purchased this god forsaken thing that is now holding court in my garage.)

God damn thing is huge. 11' one way and a good five or six the other..

I was adding them.. check again

I left the guard rails off (mostly because my knees couldn't take anymore) because they are for pussies and give the outside lane an advantage. ;)

This four lanes is a lot bigger than any of the shit we ever had..

For scale

IMG_0002.jpg

That flip flop is about 12 inches..

It just looks smaller because I put it in an empty portion of the garage.

Sounds good.. this thing is taking up way to much room in my garage so it will go inside.. which means it won't be the drunk gambling machine for long. Lol. But a beer is always welcome

Mount it in a couple sheet of plywood, you'd have to make a frame of some sort also. Then hang it off the wall on hinges so all you need to.do is fold it down for druken revelry... :thumbsup

That's what I did, but it lowered from the ceiling via a winch. I just cut it up a few weeks ago on the band saw and chucked in the dumpster because nobody wanted it.

Ready for when they wake up in the morning though

HAHAHA I f-ing love it. I have spent countless hours in the garage building stuff for my younger siblings with my Dad (I am 7 years older than the next one) and now with my own kids. First time I ever had a beer with my Dad was one such Christmas Eve. First time I ever heard my grandfather drop an F bomb was in that garage "F this f-ing thing". By far some of my favorite memories. It's all about the kids reactions when they get to play with it that makes it all worth it even though we all know what a pain in the ass it is. Awesome set up and awesome job Dad. Now kick the kids off and start laying down money because we buy this shit for us more than we do for them.
