Since I have been reading a lot of doom and gloom threads. Things are getting expensive and it’s going to keep rising. I thought I’d share my little hustle that could help anyone.

I know eBay charges a ridiculous amount of fees, but things do sell. We had a garage sale over a month ago, and no one really showed up. We donated a lot to goodwill that day. Well, I started getting these stories on my instagram about a guy reselling stuff animals. I kept watching his videos and saw he was selling old tv remotes, untested electrical devices, etc

I thought I could do this. The keys to his success was posting daily, buy it now/with best offer and taking photos in square mode with good lighting on a white background. It usually takes 3 weeks of doing this to get some sales going.

Well, I followed this guys advice and a month later, I have made over $1200. My grandma had old tv remotes, seniors don’t like to change their tvs because they know their remotes. Just simple stuff that moves. Old firesticks, Xbox 360 games, calculator, books, GoPro mounts, well basically anything. I also learned you do charge shipping. I am a bit amazed at what people buy.

Anyways, it’s not groundbreaking numbers. But, it paid for the last havasu trip and will pay for the regatta trip in a few weeks. So any little bit helps and it takes a little pressure off my husband. We are fine, but we have a lot of tires to pay for.

My mom’s friend found this out and she has given me all her Christmas villages to sell for a 50% split. I have sold 2 in a week and I have about 15-20 more to list. So now another friend of my moms might go through her garage as well. They don’t want to do the work to sell. Offer up is very hit and miss for me.

Just a little bit of a reminder that some stuff laying around could get some money.

Nice.

Are you doing these with 0 starting bid / no reserve?

My grandmother left behind what we figure is a FUCKton of value in Swarovski and Walt Disney figurines and we figured we’d just throw them up on eBay and see what happens.

I’m sure those would sell very well.

I only do buy it now with best offer. The guy didn’t recommend bidding. So I haven’t tried that. He just goes off past sales and looks at the current pricing.

To find the price point.

If you have the eBay app, type what you are selling or take a picture and it’ll find it. Then, go to the filter and hit sold/completed. It will pull up past sales of that item and you’ll be able to see a good price point of what things actually sold for and shipping costs. You can do this on the website, you just click advanced search.

Thats a good gig....

When my folks passed they had several of those clown golfers figurines.

Garage sales did nothing.....Hot items on eBay.. had a couple of bidding wars... easy sales for a reasonable price

I’ll ad to this thread………

Here is a niche that can be done from home.

There is a demand for Large Art.

If you have a large wall to decorate, the largest canvas you can generally buy at a box store is 5’ x 5’. This is way too small for a large wall. It won’t be to “scale” of the wall.

Do a search on google of art that is say 8’ x 8’. (10’ x8’ 10 x 12, etc) you will be shocked at how much they are asking. As an example, my wife and I saw a lime green 10’ x 12’ one color paining. It was just all lime green. It sold for 12k. I could make that for approx $300.

The hard part is shipping. That is why you might have to disassemble it, in order to not only ship, but to even get into the front door of the subject home. Canvas is your friend. lol

You don’t need to be an artist. But, being able to search the internet for inspiration and plagiarism should be easy. I’d start by copying a humongous Banksy. Sure it won’t look exact, but who cares. It’s large and fits the wall to scale. No shortage of buyers.

My wife sells on clothing/fashion items on Poshmark, she often picks up items that arent really right for her "posh store" so we recently just created an ebay marketplace, but are still learning the ins and outs of it and havent listed anything yet...glad to see some positive feedback in regards to Ebay, its usually all negative.

I have sold on Ebay since 2000. But always just to get rid of stuff I dont need.

I saw the same video of the Ebay seller on youtube. Problem is, I dont have time to go source things at the thrift stores and garage sales. Drive me crazy to peer thru boxes of junk. Although my girls could live shopping every day. LOL

Good luck on the new venture, it does get addicting!

One year, I bought an old dirt bike unknowing what it was, was a pretty rare "thumper". I parted it out down to the last nuts and bolts. Made a pretty good profit!!

I did it for a while. Stuff I had laying around. Bike and car. Parted out a couple bikes. Find stuff at swap meets and resell.
Box of auto parts store clean out inventory. Anything $5. Dug through it found several parts and said $5 each? Guy said $20 for all. Nitrous carb plates ebayed for about $40 each.
Semi storage trailer next to work. Guy says anyone want this shit it’s going to dump. Guys went and looked said just a bunch of trash, toys, dolls. In my mind I flipped out. Waited till they were gone.
30 cabbage patch dolls, HO trains, movie scripts. I killed on that one. Scripts aren’t worth shit though. I kept a Smokey and the Bandit one though.
But it’s a Shit ton of work.
Might get the wife on it. We have tons of Princess House Crystal.

This is just a joke………..

After seeing how much money is flat out wasted on elections nationwide. I was thinking that I would start an LLC called Election Services. The next election cycle, I would send every campaign in America an invoice for $836.72 and see how many send me a check back. I expect that I would probably do pretty good, since it appears that donor supported campaign funds are spent like drunken sailers on leave.

There are thousands of campaigns nationwide. Even a 2% return would probably bring in 7 digits.

I like that this can be a “remote” work from home job. Lol

Again……. I am just being funny, so don’t take me seriously. However, I am sure you are reading the above and coming to the conclusion that this could easily work. If so, you owe me 10% for giving you the idea! LOL

That's even better than the idea I had to put gasoline in 8oz bottles and sell it as "fuel treatement" for $7/bottle.

My ex wife does this and makes a fuck ton but it’s her full time job. She scours every selling platform like FaceBook, Craigslist, OfferUp and then hits garage sales all over Southern California everyday. The more random the item the better it sells. Some of the shit I would never think to buy and then resell.

She’s been doing it for 5 years so nothing new to her. It takes a while to build a network but as fast as she lists stuff it’s in a box and being shipped.

Blows my mind but she doesn’t need or ask for my money so I don’t question it 😂

I do the Ebay thing sometimes. I got a wild hair up my ass and listed some stuff on ebay and market place the last couple of weeks. Just random parts laying around. Also a couple of trucks that I don't want. Sold 2 of the 3 trucks and some parts on ebay and have raised about 7500.00 in the last week and a half. I listed stuff and I get messages from friends " you selling all your stuff and moving?" There isn't enough band width to list all my crap. I am going to keep going and see how much I can sell and hold on till the recession and see what we can buy.

This is my fear with eBay vs Facebook or Craigslist or something. Taxes on my old shit laying around that someone already paid taxes on..? Thanks Uncle Sam
This might be a @shintoooo question.

From what I read, if you sell your own stuff, it’s not taxed, but resellers are taxed? I don’t know how they figure it out. eBay asked for my ssn as soon as I hit $600 sales. It’ll suck if I get taxed on my own stuff, but I figure I still made money.

You want a side hustle? I got about 8k to 10k lbs of custom acrylic light panels for interior architectural lighting. I bought all of the inventory of a company that closed and have sold some of it, but have a bunch more to go. Think of Vegas casinos and high end hotels and restaurants. That kind of stuff!!
I would sell it for pennies on the dollar. Just don't want to see it go to the dump!

Have any of you received state or fed tax statements? Yet!

My ex’s is a legit business with business accounts. It would be pretty hard to elude Uncle Sam. Maybe for a short period of time but it’ll catch up to you eventually.

Your x has business account and apparently sustainable, referring more to 1000 a month as metioned part time. My understanding anything over 600 per, not sure, year, month is now reported to I.R.S.

It’s all a matter of what you want to put into it. You spend the time to source and list and you get the sales in return. I got my wife started on listing stuff on eBay and it went pretty well.

One day I was buying something on FB marketplace and this guy offered me a box fuel of fuel and oil filters among some random VW parts. I bought it for $30 and sold it to my wife at cost. It was a great deal for her but she was pissed….. until she made $900 in two weeks on that box alone.

You’d be surprised what people are out there trying to buy on eBay. Great side gig for your extra time or even a full time business if you want to scale it to that point.

I've done it with a couple items on Offerup, plus I list some musical items on Reverb. Still finding my way around those sites, but getting there...

I recall seeing someone who made some serious cash buying up opened package or closeout items or returns from the ends of the aisles near the walls in Walmart and selling them on ebay (if you're not a baller and shop Wally's regularly, you know the endcaps I'm talking about...!). There's also clearance racks and shelves at the clearance stores like Ross and Marshalls where you score some cheap inventory.

Not knowing all the campaign finance laws scares me a bit..

I have 1776af.com and a shit load of others that were intended as clothing companies etc

I have a couple hundred domain names with loose biz plans on every single one of them.. if you guys are interested I could start listing them out if someone wants to start a side hustle?

Everything from clothing co’s to product testing to campaign finance..

In flight entertainment all the way to telling a current product how to make millions more off something that already exists.

As with any biz though it’s 2% inspiration 98% perspiration.

The landlord I have right now for my house here in AZ got busted for that years ago and he made mullions on campaign fundraising and pissed off the clintons back then supposedly and the DOJ busted him on some obscure law.

Like you said, its a slippery slope!

I have been selling on eBay for about 20 years. It started by selling parts for Bergeron Marine and still sell some parts for Brian for now. I now buy old inventory from boat shops that are going out of business or just want to get rid of some old inventory in addition to the local marine warehouses. We sell new gaskets that we have cut at a local manufacturer in addition some other new parts. We concentrate mostly on boat and marine related parts but occasionally we get some other stuff to sell. I "retired" from my job of 25 years and now do this full time and really enjoy it.

The stuffed animal thing got me thinking. My kids have hundreds. Are people really paying $5-$10 for a stuffed animal, then probably $10-$15 for shipping too? I guess my question for any of the items, are you charging people for shipping and buying boxes to properly ship the items? With all the crap I have lying around, I always think it is going to cost more to box/ship than its worth so I just donate it or throw it away. This thread has me thinking of giving ebay a try again.
I remember when we first got married, I sold used shoes, jeans, etc. and was shocked at what people would pay for that crap.

Mostly I reuse boxes from Amazon and try to save all the protective packaging within the boxes. I did buy a large roll of bubble wrap and mailing bubble envelopes. I normally just charge the postage fee since I have most of the materials, but if I have an item that is harder to ship. I’ll charge a flat fee. You can charge a flat fee which can include your boxes, packing material and postage. The jellycat stuff animals sell really well and so do other brands.

So with Brandon’s 600$ cap before tax’s are you running a business license and all the rest associated with that?
Running a P&L ledger with shipping and related costs. Vehicle/ mileage?
Running a UPS acct for labels weight etc.?
When I stopped it got too time consuming going to shipper. Standing in line etc. last time I shipped a bike or frame I was
like “ screw this, I don’t have time”

My wife has been doing pretty well with these, the first time she came home with them, I am like you really are buying stuffed animals from the thrift store....she buys them for a few bucks, and resales them for $25-$30 on her store....she does a lot of research and knows what to look for...it all started with just selling stuff we have around the house....now she has her regular thrift stores she hits on regular days...and has expanded a bit to hitting up garage sales...she got me into it a bit, I have been doing pretty well with baseball bats...I regularly find nice bats at the thrift store for like $3, I buy a 2pack of new grip tape from Amazon for $9, clean the bat up and put a new grip, I am into the bats for right around $8, I have sold some for $30 all the way up to $120...

Somewhat similar. I have bought a few hot rod shops inventory when they retired closed down. So much shit laying around but to good to throw away. I have sold a fair amount on ebay over the years.

I know I am constantly buying stuff animals on ebay for my kids. They will watch a show/movie on disney or some other streaming service and fall in love. Watch the movie over and over again. Well now they want the toys. But unless it's a current movie/show with in the last year or so they aren't making the toys anymore. All the once $10 toys are now $25-100. I was paying $5 for current mc donalds toys because it was easier than trying to buy 5 happy meals at different locations looking for that one toy they want from the set.

There’s certain ones that sell better than others but my Ex said a ton of the stuffed animals she sells goes overseas to Europe and Australia. She likes the stuffed animals because she buys them cheap, doubles her money on the sale and then very easy to ship.

I’m not kidding when I say she is killing it $$.

Yeah, she ships overseas and they pay for it. It’s not an easy job. To be at her level no way you could have another job. It’s a full time job and when I say full time she’s pretty much hunting for deals 7 days a week.

Our son is special needs and needs full time care so he goes everywhere with her like an assistant 😂

She puts a fuckton of miles on her SUV driving all over SoCal finding this junk.

Don’t be afraid of listing a few auctions here and there. Depending on the item they’ll go up 10x in the last 7 seconds.

I’ve sold on eBay since 2000. I would just run parts on the lathes and list the stuff. I got killer exposure and picked up many good accounts along the way.

An eBay store also collects the sales tax. Nice not being burdened with that.

You have to be smart with shipping. I don't sell used stuff or one of something....I have about 10 package sizes, and if it doesn't fit in those I don't sell it. I offer free shipping (obviously built into the item price) on everything and I know the exact shipping cost going in. Took a lot of research and figuring out which carriers offer what programs that I can take advantage of, but it works at the end of the day.

Selling one off stuff constantly has to be challenge with shipping, I'm not sure how or why people do it. I take one picture, create one listing, and sell that thing 100 times. I wouldn't bother doing it if I could only sell it once.

LOL
So funny you mention this, I was thinking yesterday on how much money is being spent on Elections and how I can get a piece without actually picking a side..............I bet your plan would work.

Been meaning to ask...

How did you end up with the fires and all that? Hope you didn't loose anything. 🙏

Figuring out shipping costs sucks. I know some have a flat rate cost per box like you mentioned. I have a scale now to make sure I don’t undercharge.

It’s challenging when you have used items since I am taking 22 pictures to make sure I have every angle possible to make sure I don’t get returns or unhappy buyers. It takes about 10 minutes per listing for me now that I know what to do. I also got a label printer for $30 that prints the labels and I don’t have to cut and tape that. It saves times. The first week was definitely frustrating figuring out shipping.

We hung tight and did ok. Just unloaded the truck and van that never left the driveway yesterday.
There was no property damage in Big Bear.
Thanks for asking!

To be clear, I have not done this, but I have thought about it, it is borderline fraud IMHO but a hustle:

I'm fairly confident based on my experience in a publicly traded company that you could run a hustle for motorsports sponsorship like this where you carpet bomb large corporations with an invoice for sponsorship that basically says when you pay the bill you agree to terms. There are tons of complacent Account Payable departments that just approved invoices without looking at them. You only need a few to fund your racing habit.

I assume the elections services would be very similar. I suspect you could do this for a lot of different things and if I had a good lawyer friend I bet they could craft your invoice to give some level of protection if you actually perform a service.

If you and I sat down an addressed the fraud issue, I think we could come up with something.

I too thought about the holes in my idea. Basically it is fraud when no service is provided. So how do you ad a service? One idea I had to overcome this……… I would buy $5 floral arrangements and ship them to every campaign in America. A few months later, I would send the $832,76 invoice for the Campaign Services floral arrangement, delivered on xyz date, in invoice.
Do you think that overcomes the fraud issue?LOL

Again, to those reading this, I am only being funny with no plans of actually doing the above. The 1st Amendment allows me to discuss it. So please, just take it with the levity of knowing that there is no real intent to actually do this. Thank you.
