How many of you still have and use old school stereo equipment? When did you get it?
I have had my Marantz 2245 receiver, BSR McDonald 810X turntable and Marantz Imperial 6 speakers since 1974. Saved up my money from extra jobs to buy it. It was the first big purchase I ever made. It was about $650 and also included a Sony color tv that I used for 20 + years (guy saw me put it out for trash and asked if he could have it. I said sure. Saw him months later and he said he fixed it for $20. I really felt like an idiot). Had the turntable and receiver re-conditioned last year for the first time ever. Now playing like never before and I still love this old relic.

Since I live in Texas, I know of places here. Texas Sound in Austin refurbs speakers, but I don't know if it's worth your time and money to ship them.

I think these qualify: Phase Linear 300 amp and 3000 preamp I bought new in about 1980. Used pretty much daily ever since and still work and sound great. Haven't setup my turntable since I moved last

, but it's a Linn from the mid-80's. Had a pair of Speakerlab K's (Klipsch cornerhorn copies) from same era, but got rid of because no suitable corners in my new place.

My first system, which I do not own but it is still functional at a mechanic shop in Alaska, was a Kenwood 800 watt system with turntable and dual cassette. Two towers with 10” subs, dual mids and teeets.

Now car stereo stuff I have some classic gear.

You probably know more about this than I do, but how about a speaker short or too low of impedance?
amp is rated for 4 ohm. Speakers are 10" cerwin vegas rated at 4 ohms. I haven't psychically tested the ohms, but the speakers work fine on my other 2 recievers.

No pix we’re riding out in the desert but at home we still play a 30+ year old Sony.
Still excellent has a 12 disc CD changer.

Sounds every bit as good as a new Yamaha dual subs surround sound system hooked to the TV next to it.
But the Bluetooth with the Yamaha is way better.

Someone posted here awhile back......there's a site that has speaker/woofer refurb kits... seem cheap and easy too. Just never followed up on it.

I've cleaned all the knobs and switches. The amp is clicking on and off.
Mine was doing the same thing. Would have to turn it on and off several times to finally get it to work. Then it wouldn't do anything but click. They replaced all the old capacitors with new, better ones and it was good to go. Also, should add that they
re-tuned everything for better station reception, new antenna and made me new 20ft speaker wires.

Have a Sony theater system with Celestion spekers in the game room with big screen. In the living room, have my Kenwood KR 6600 receiver and JVC cassette player. Kenwood is a 1974, JVC is 1978. Have the original brochure and instructional manual. Kenwood has gold plated contacts, everything works. Also have Teac and Revox RR players. Hitachi Quartz direct drive record player with over 500 LP's. Enough material to play for weeks, never hear the same song as on stations.:)

My Technics SL1200 MKIIs. Flawless condition and get played on a few times a week. Best DJ turntable EVER!!!! I can't remember but I think the production date but they are 20 years old give or take. Crazy they are worth more now than they were new which is so rare for electronics!!! I think I paid 350.00 each new but these particular ones are probably worth 1200-1300.00 each in the condition they are in and being they are the MK2. New in box versions are going for 3000 to 10000. each.

I've had this for ever. I think I acquired the preamp and amp in '85ish. Turntable was updated a few years ago. I have another road case with SAE tuner and tape deck and 2 more Yamaha amps tucked away.
When I got divorced and moved into my new crappy digs this was the one and only thing I had. Still use it daily. I'm a vinyl whore to this day.

just got rid of an old technics reciever and a pair of RSL 3600's. they always sounded great, just too damn big. glad to see that RSL made a comeback recently. my dad has purchased them from the original store in torrance and there was an original receipt inside the cabinet when I had to repair one of the crossovers.

Still only a 2ch system since our move...

LivingRoom.jpg

Klipsch Epic CF-4's on the outside, Klipsch KLF-30's on the inside. Sub is an old Yamaha YST-150. Each pair of speakers is driven from a Yamaha MX-800u amp (170w/ch @ 8Ohms), with a Yamaha RX-A2050 for control.

Just picked up a clean pair of Klipsch Klipschorns for another room. One owner, all original 1978 models. Looking forward to playing with those.

Woot woot. Like an idiot I sold my 1200's and replaced them with a dual Denon deck.

I still have the system, Crown Power Tech 400W amp, Denon dual CD/Denon dual audio cassette (w/pitch control, kind of neat), Furman mixer and Panasonic loud speakers, all in the original coffin from 1993.

Just by chance, I was looking at our area wide classified website this morning and I see a 70's vintage Pioneer SX-1010 for sale. One of the first big boys at 100w per channel. It looks really nice, so of course now I am thinking......Should I or shouldn't I? If it sounds as nice as it looks, it would be a pretty good deal at the asking price. Would be nice to have to pass on to my grandkids someday if I could find some nice vintage speakers to go with it...

My small collection. The Marantz came from a condo that my mom bought on Palm Desert around '99

The yamaha was just bought for $20 at Goodwill this year but it needed work. It would turn it's self off repeatedly untill it wouldn't stay on. Luckily my dad found a guy to fix it, alone with his older Yamaha set. I still haven't hooked it up in the house cause I was given the Onkyo and it's currently running in the house.

I really would like to find some good speakers for the Marantz and have it all mounted on the walls in the garage. Eventually right?!?!?

Old Pioneer stuff. I have the 9800 amp/tuner to replace that receiver on the bottom.

Anyone know a good stereo repair shop in SoCal?

Remember when the Sunday LA Times had pages and pages of old school stereo equipment Ads. Use to drool over that stuff..... I bought a few old school tuners at garage sales, always something wrong with them. I miss the simplicity. I still keep my eye out in case one pops up that works........

We used a couple of Soundcraftsman amps during that time frame (I started DJ'ing in 85'). I see your piece is a pre-amp, but I know Soundscraftsman equipment is solid.

I also have an Alesis reverb in my rack, similar to yours.

I bet that setup is LOUD!

I love that preamp. They have the reputation of being transparent. What goes on comes out exactly the same. That's not a reverb. It's a crossover. Originally there was a tape deck and tuner where the amp and x over are. Those along with 2 other amps were in another rack. Still have everything but the Cerwin Vega's. Yeah, it was pretty loud. :D My ex hated it, good thing or I wouldn't still have it.

Only stereo I’ve owned. Got it
in 11 grade - 1977.

JVC pushing Cerwin Vega’s. Never stopped for second.

Couldn't bring myself to buy the Pioneer. It was nice, but I couldn't pull the trigger. However, I did find a nice Marantz 2270 and bought it. Spent some $$$'s having it recapped and brought up to A-1 condition. I also found a really nice Kenwood KD-500 turntable, known as The Rock, and two nice pairs of Advent New Large Speakers. Got it all hooked up and running. Granted, I am an old guy, but this new, old system sounds pretty dang good to me. Now I listen to both systems, sometimes together and they both sound great to me.

By the way, if anyone here has, or knows someone who has a set of Marantz Imperial 6 (not 6g) speakers they want to get rid of, please let me know as I would like to add another set to my original system.

We always had music in our house growing up. Waaay back in the day my Dad built what I think was a Heath Kit stereo with 2 big ass speakers. Every night when he got home the elevator music went on till about 8pm when the tv could be turned on. MY cousin had that system for a while. Not sure what happened to it. Sure brings back memories:)

Finally found another set of Marantz Imperial 6 speakers (circa 1970's) that are fairly close to my original set. They were in decent shape, but once I got them home, I couldn't stand the scratches and water spot on the speakers. What kind of idiot would set a glass on any wood and not expect a water ring. Here are a couple of pics of them before and after sanded, ready for stain/finish. I sure hope they come out ok. First time to try and refinish speakers.

Bottom of one speaker. Previous owner must have had them on the garage floor. They are beat up as hell on the bottom. The one I have sanded was not quite as bad as this one, but it came out very nice. Pictures of the finished product to follow (if they turn out ok).

Going to stain/finish them this week with Watco Danish Oil (Dark Walnut) and hopefully, they will come out fine in the end. Can't wait to fire them up and match them with my current Imperial 6 speakers. It should be awesome!!!!

Reviving this old thread. I’ve had this unit for about 10 years now give or take. It was my dads before he gave it to me. In the 10 years I’ve had it, I’ve never used it. To be honest, I don’t even know if it works as I have no speakers to hook up to it. I know when I plug it in, I hear it click on and when I move between settings I can here the internal parts click or make noise so I assume it works (but the indicator light does not light up).

I have absolutely no use for this. Is there a market for this stuff and if so, where do I post it?

Always a market man! Thats actually a very nice old school unit. If you wanted to keep it, you could get it fixed.

If you wanted to part ways with it, id try to list it on HiFishark or AudioKarma, those are 2 of the biggest vintage audio sites.
