Stepson and DIL are moving from Decorah, IA to Athens, WV. I have no experience with using moving companies and they’re asking for advice. They got the following estimate that is a mess to read, but basically $2774 with $10k liability insurance included. Load and unload, no packing or unpacking done by the movers.

Suggestions? They need to move by July 17th. It’s 806 miles. One bedroom and living/dining room stuff. Estimate shows 420 cf, 3000 lbs.

Pay the $2770 for the service, if your furniture is good. New furniture sucks and is way over priced.
Pods would be the way I would go.

No PODs there but UPack gave me this quote. Moving the right direction. Thanks!

Our son is a College Football coach. They don’t make shit and they move constantly. He’s got a dream, he’s good at it, and we have helped him a lot. Thanks for the help.

They have my beater pickup (gave it to ‘em) and a Prius. I’m now thinking that they leave all but their bed and personal stuff behind. They just left UNLV in January. This school (Luther) paid to move them, but he just got a better offer. This business is the worst. Dog eat dog, very little loyalty. I just encourage him to keep pushing. Anything better on the resume is good. Look up Gruden on Wikipedia. I use that to keep him motivated .

One of my son's high school asst. coaches just took a job as head coach in an Omaha high school. I think he's kind of trying to work his way up to college. It's good to dream, I wish the best for anyone trying.

This is his 6th school. A lot of it was Graduate Assistant stuff. UNLV was his 2nd Div 1 school, and he played in the new Raiders stadium. We were all spoiled, but the whole staff got fired and he has to keep moving. He’s now O line coach at Div 3 which was actually a move up. This one is Div2 and O Line. He’s got really good references, even some NFL guys, so he has a decent head start. High School Athletic Admin is their backup plan. We want him to push, but they will also want to start a family sometime so the High School thing ( probably Texas) could be awesome as well.

My mother in law just paid $7000 for a moving company to come and pack up, move one truck worth of stuff 400 miles. I looked at the stuff she moved and it was $2-3k worth of stuff if you were to buy brand new and everything was 5-10 years old. I juist shake my head and don't say anything, haha.

I know a college basketball coach who did the same thing for about 20 years. Move almost every year. He might of stayed one place for 4 years.

It is a seriously effed up business. It kinda makes me crazy. These are all Universities that promote social safety nets for everyone, cradle to grave, but they shit all over their athletic employees that actually bring in some money.

That is a broker mover that doesn't own any trucks or have any employees. They will sub it out to the lowest bidder and even then, the actual person moving you will name their price, which will be much higher than that quote.

Any mover that asks for a deposit, turn and run. You have to dig past all their made up reviews to see the actual customer reviews.

Have them contact a national mover for an accurate free quote, some will offer guaranteed price quotes. I would recommend Allied, NorthAmerican or United.

We hired movers (labor) from local moving co's to pack/unpack our rented u- haul truck (20' box truck, 1 way, 3-4 days) when we moved my wife to Utah from So. Cal. (660 mi.) For her job. I think it cost about $2500.00 with fuel. We packed/unpacked the boxes etc. The movers dis-assembled/assembled the bulk of the furniture.
Can he get the team players to help him pack/unpack?

I'll touch base with them today with these options. Leaning towards the UPack dealio although I wonder if they should consider the ditch most of their stuff idea. You guys have been great. Thanks! I knew the RDP braintrust would get the juices flowing.

An alternative to PODS is a company called Red Rover. It’s a PODS knock off.

We used U-pack from CA to TX. They were great. $3300 in early 2020 for a full trailer (plus we spent $1000 for boxes/blankets, misc shipping materials). We loaded / unloaded. Our couch was worth more than that.

Depends on how much their items are worth, whether best to leave behind or move some or all of it.

No Red Rover there. UPack or dump everything still looks like the alternatives.

Quoted prices don't seem all that bad. I'm guessing moving prices are starting to decline. When we checked just moving from So cal to So Utah was a fortune. I think it still cost me $1500 for gas and a 2 day26' box truck rental. It was cheaper to round trip from utah as the truck prices a year ago in CA were crazy.

I would have easily paid $2500 the move almost killed me :D

The prices have come down a bit. Did a Uhaul truck for my parents last month with allllll their crap and it was $500 all in.

They are paying to have their big furniture moved by some white glove people tomorrow. I think that will be $3k. 90% of it will be liquidated when they get here. Old people don’t believe you when you tell them their 45 year old fine furniture isn’t going to look good in their brand new 2023 house. They need to see it for themselves. 🤣

Whatever you do, if you have nice stuff pack it yourself. Crate that fucker up in plywood if you need to. Because these moving company joker assholes will fuck your shit up.

Or best bet, sell anything that's nice and just buy a new one when you get there..

Any furnished apartment options where he is moving? How about a shared rental with another coach? Given his profession he should learn to live out of a duffle bag. second vote would be to sell anything bulky and get the biggest uhaul he can get and drive whats left to the new location.
