I am thinking about getting swim step kit for my Lavey 21 xtski and was thinking about getting a couple of pieces cut for the top of my fenders. Anyone have experience with that or Good/bad/WTF are you thinking?

Barrett had SC Wake install ours. They did a great job (swim step, cockpit, dash, bow, cabin, everywhere!) I know people complain about it getting dirty and hard to clean and it’s true, it shows dirt after a day of boating. But we’ve had ours installed for 2 seasons now and at the end of the weekend I pressure wash it and it takes out all stains and looks as good as new after. Food for thought. I like how seadeck and the like flooring looks. Always have.

I don’t think you’d have too much problem installing on fenders and a swim step yourself. I did a couple steps a while back. Pretty easy stuff to work with. Make a template out of paper and, match it to the back of the seadeck and cut. Easy peasy.

I did gator step on my swim step and swim platform and it really helped. The gator step seems pretty soft however, so don’t want shoes on it for the most part. I noticed the boat cover can even rub it so watch for that.

We had seadek on a different boat, that stuff was slicker than snot when wet. Slipped off the swim platform once. Taking it off and trying gator step there as well. Hope it makes a difference but just need to train that crowd to take shoes off.

Gator step and others seem to be the ticket for interiors these days so many manufacturers no longer doing carpet. I personally am not a fan of carpet anymore.

I have grip tape on my fenders. Shoes always there, probably tear the gator step up pretty good so I wouldn’t recommend it for trailer fenders.

Detail specialties in LHC supposedly does it. You can contact them directly and they do all the work. I tried them initially and then wound up doing it myself (templating and measurements) but having them do the final install.

If you’re in so cal you can call the SoCal location. They are reasonably easy to deal with.

For me I think they sent me like 4 or 5 templates I kept sending back with changes. I think they lost money on my deal. This was specifically for my extended swim platform which was splashed from a Malibu boat and modified so template was pure custom measurements.

Gatorstep is down the street. Kinda why I wanted them to do it. I have the cad file for the template so it’s easy for them.

Have had Seadek on last 2 boats swim platforms. Never experienced the slippery issue you describe. Dunno.

The sea dek material we have is like hard rubber. It’s not even remotely spongy, and doesn’t look like gator step (it looks like the teak floor that comes in Hallets but it’s grey with white stripes). Maybe it’s an early version of it, the boat is a 2017.

My first installation was on a Rinker we owned for many years. If I had to guess I probably installed it around '07 or '08. I remember it was reasonably new to the national market. It was a different pattern but same soft material as on the Formula.

That sounds like something other than sea deck?

DekX is a local company, cut on-site and their edging is better.

Why the preference? Material?

I have seadek in my boat and I Fucking hate it…on 4+ warrantied out sections. Once it’s completely trashed I’m having it all taken out and at most I’ll put in a swim pad from DekX.

My gripe on seadek is well documented here…

My swim step is REAL slippery and I do not want anyone to take a dig off it . What are my other options?

Id recommend a textured gelcoat in that application. They make additives for the gel and then its simple as taping off the pad/patern/design.

of course Im saying this as somebody whos only watched it being done 😅. but cost is comparable vs seadek and it will take much more abuse and last way longer

My .02

Gator Step was less than responsive when I emailed them. They eventually got back to me after another email and phone call but I passed on considering them based on that experience.

I was looking at doing my fender tops and fender steps. Not a big money make for anyone I’m sure.

I called Detail Specialties and they picked up the phone and gave me a ballpark quote right away. Much better customer service experience.

Here is a rec for Twisted Traction - Mark picked our boat up from Pedro, sent me color choices, a mock up and a price within a day. The boat was then done the next day . You can get any logo design etc- One of the easiest transactions I've had done.
Just text Mark to start -

( don't mind the eye bleed inducing snaps, they are coming off when we re- upholster this winter )

that looks like somebody used a texture template.

the additive used puts grit into the gel. i would describe it almost like built in grip tape but larger grit. you can also decide how much grip you want by how mich additive you mix into the gel

It was tooled that way, they used a plastic of some sort to get the pattern, no sand like some have used.
It’s not overly aggressive and I think the sea deck etc would bond ok👍

I’ve had mine on my Lavey for a while now and it’s exactly what you are describing on the swim step no issues 👍🏼

My eliminator swim platform has the texture swim step in gel like a lot of other boats. We did a half inch extra distance around each edge to get to the smooth fiberglass and that helps hold it down. Also clean the texture really well and then wipe it down with alcohol and let it dry and then apply the material. So far so good.

Bladescustomdecking, check out on IG. He did my conquest this year, love it. He’s in Parker and custom cuts in house, also will come to you. Blade was awesome, way fewer seams than a gator or seadeck kit, and does custom. Check out on IG

There’s different brands, my boat has Gator Step, but Chris Griner’s new stuff is super nice. Mines a few years old and still looks amazing, think it comes down to cleanliness of application, and taking care of your stuff.
