Schools on lockdown today

So the District is worried kids are going to look at the solar eclipse today so they are putting our schools on lockdown. No recess and outside lunch. My son’s elementary school bought all these glasses so the students could view the eclipse and ended up selling them because the District said no to the eclipse viewing activities. We are getting dumber as a society and apparently need to be protected from ourselves.

College and public schools are the biggest scams ever pulled on its citizens. The highest levels of these organizations are downright crooks. It’s a shame because there are lots of good people on the frontline within these orgs.

I would’ve been way farther ahead without my college debt to start my life and it was a fraction of what todays college costs.

I’m a bit on my soapbox here but it’s absolutely ridiculous mismanagement of our children like what the OP posted. Might as well bubble wrap everyone and let the government protect people from themselves.

I can imagine in todays schools they wouldn’t even bring up an event like that, let alone watch it, for fear of traumatising the kids and then having to get shrinks for all of them.

We had to sign a paper letting them do the eclipse. Making a bunch of kids stare into the sun is a pretty big liability. That’s all the world is these days, trying to avoid lawsuits.

Wife is an elementary school Principal. She is encouraging her kids and teachers to go outside and look at it. Meanwhile, some of the other Principals at other schools in her district are doing the "eat in/play in" schedule where the kids will not be able to go outside. What a shame to restrict the kids from being able to see that and you have to question what those Principals are thinking. Pretty sure I know who they voted for, at least.

She had parents messaging her last night asking if school was going to be canceled. WTF? This was not even a question when I was a kid. Canceling school because of a solar eclipse? We are truly getting dumber as a society.

Thats terrible. We used to make gadgets in school and learn about an eclipse when teachers were teachers.

My son is an English teacher at Valley Junior High here in Carlsbad.
The entire school has been issued glasses and will all go out to the football field at 11 am to watch the eclipse.
That’s definitely old school.

We did it with a shoe box if I recall correctly. It was a cool project that we did in arts and crafts and them put it to use. None of that practical common sense stuff these days.

You're a professional! Jackholes like me get "Arc-Eyes". If you have the darkest shade in your mask, you'll be good. If you have a 9 or 10, eyes will be tearing up the rest of the day...like sunning with a sun burn. Be careful, your eyes are still young.

That is a bunch of b.s.! I remember in 2017, we had our state testing going on. These weren't the big end-of-year tests, just our tests to gauge growth at the district level. MY kids were the ones scheduled to test during the same time as the eclipse. So the whole school was going to get to go outside and watch it with special glasses (if I recall, Reno had 90-95% totality), but my 7th graders were going to miss this amazing evidence of science in action. I pitched a very loud fit that the test was nowhere near as important to the education of these kids as witnessing the event was. I won. I always asked the question, "What's best for the kids?" and used it in this argument. They always hated when I brought that up. The test was (is) best for administrators, not the kids.

My kids school has them outside all afternoon watching the eclipse, did a whole unit in science on it. They did a pretty good job of it all.

Would have done it sooner.

Oldest will be going to public high school this year as a freshman. It was her choice and she made her own reasons known so we are cool with it.

She is the most shy of the 3 kids and the least involved in sports so I’m happy she wanted to.
She is also taking college credits and plans to have her AA her senior year.

My younger kids love it because they get to do sports mid day during the week so they get more 1-1 time with coaches. They are both very chatty and make friends easy so their social skills are good to go. The curriculum is easy to follow and they get a days worth of work done in just a couple hours.

I would not recommend unless you have an exceptional wife that has much patience.

Every kid has a cell phone now. I had forgot about it, was over in Redlands at university doing some pool work. Suddenly felt cooler and like I put sunglasses on. Oh shit. Broke out my phone, reversed camera like taking a selfie. Pointed at sun, I’m facing phone, sun is at back of my head. Sure as shit can see. Easier then hole in paper deal, plus can snap pics.

I talked to my mom today after seeing this thread. She loves science and I know she has been teaching this to her kids. I asked her how was the eclipse and she said they weren’t allowed to view it per district rules. The principal tried to make a plan in the morning. But, it was a hard no. A few parents didn’t want the viewing to happen to protect kids eyes and they were worried about potential lawsuits and phone calls. Well, some parents got upset when they found out that their kids didn’t get to see it. My mom was pretty sad to tell the kids that brought glasses that it wasn’t happening. She said 10 years ago she would have just done it, but these days- everything is a “lawsuit.” It is a reflection on how society is now. I didn’t ask, but I’m sure if a few kids decided they had to go to the “restroom” she would have said yes.

The way parents act these days becomes a huge issue. A few months ago, a parent that wasn’t allowed to pick up their child tried to. It become a little heated and the office had a police officer come to mediate. Protocal is to have a school in a “lockdown.” Just so the child isn’t taken by whoever is trying to get the child. Well within 10 minutes, parents were calling the school and even showing up. They demanded to know why they weren’t informed of this lockdown and why was there a police car. A student texted their parents they were in a lockdown. It became a huge ordeal. The parent did calm down and leave. The chain reaction is fast.

My mom has been teaching for 30+ years and cannot wait to retire. She absolutely still loves teaching, but these days- she finds it exhausting.
