I have the opportunity to pick up a 68 Sanger flat bottom, wood deck. Boat is immaculate, trailer is immaculate. V-drive with reverse, medium build 454 with dual quads, exhaust logs with over transom rewarded pipes (think vintage stule). Boat and trailer are what I would consider show quality. The entire hull inside is wood and looks excellent. Trailer has period correct torque thrusts, etc.

It’s your typical super clean boat show vintage V-drive…

what are they worth? Ballpark?

I think this is one of those "Whatever you are willing to pay deals" ......... is what it is worth. Sounds like a great find to show off and enjoy owning a piece of history.
Practical family boat......NO. Cool factor....YES.

8 to 15. Plus,it’s a Sanger. Is it really? They’re all Sangers lol. Tough market. What v drive in it? If you want to turn it be ready to hold it for a while.
Unless it’s really off the chart then could approach 20 to the right buyer.
Reverse in the v drive or velvet drive?

Is it a wood haul or a fiberglass haul with a wood deck? 68 is probably fiberglass which is good, with good rigging, show quality running condition is worth 20k easy. These old boats are becoming popular like hot rods.

Have you seen the boat and really looked hard at it? Not a lot of people willing to work / repair a wood deck or many that know how... if its an older build its more than likely done with poly glass, and these things crack over time depending on how much its used or abused, how its stored etc. A buddy of mine just picked up a Wickens wood deck, super clean but the deck had too much resin and has a crack completely across it, he can repair as he worked under Ken Meyers who did many of these decks, but he is leaving it alone and just using it.

I absolutely dig them and have had one in my family longer than I have been alive, I have toyed with the idea of cutting the deck off my 77' Sanger and building my own wood deck. Unfortunately my Dad passed last December and with that I will be the care taker of his wood decker. As far as value there is no blue book and in the flat bottom world there are so many variables... If its as clean as you say and I was selling and didn't need to sell it, I may start at 30k to 40K, and just see where it goes, we just sold a very clean 72 Sanger flat deck for 22K. Worth, value, cost are different things and sometimes miles apart.

Don't be afraid of the Velvet drive, they are just fine in a flat and we have them in at least 4 of our family flats. My Dad's Wood Decker has a Casale top loader with a reverse gear, but you need to shut the engine off to change gears. They don't like high rpm, 7k plus you will burn up the oil pump. They will handle the big block, we have them behind a Boss 9, 428 CJ, and several BBC. Make sure you have a 72C not the 71C, if it has the 71 just run it. In my opinion the weak spot is the dampner, think clutch plate, as I have broke the welds on a couple of them over the past 20 plus years, I went to a HD model years ago and have been worry free. You don't use these like an outdrive would, if you step on the gas in a flat, you will typically start pulling the transom under water, I use the velvet drive more for easy in and out of gear as you are pulling skiers no mare having to start and stop the engine, coming into a beach at idle tap it into reverse and you can can just stop the boat nice and smooth. If we go to a slip at all you can have some fun and back your boat into the spot, just pop her in R and she will twist to the left and back in, we had some fun playing at the blue water a couple times. If you want to run a fast boat and need to put a whirl a way in, you need to ditch the velvet
drive.

MFMRM?

(Marginal forward momentum reduction mode)
If you know what it will do you can use it to your advantage. Like back and turn only in one direction.
Back when these boats were built a lot of lakes required boats to have reverse and neutral. Not even a thought nowadays.

This is my 63 Rayson Craft. Still working on it. It has a 460 with a Casale FNR top loader. I bought it about 5 years ago and paid 3500 for it. I had to get it running and repair some rot. Nothing major. At some point I am going to get rid of the Evil Kneival paint job and probably going to duplicate the scheme of the Hot Rod Special that had the Allison v12 in it. It is the same hull. I am also going to ditch the red neck buckets for period correct benches.
My family really enjoys skiing and tubing behind it. It is fun to cruise around in. I also have a Tritoon DCB and a Nautique so it doesn’t have to do all duties. It is amazing how much seeing this boat brings a smile to people’s faces.

Update - I decided I needed another boat like biden needs a 2nd term....
But the boat is bitchin.....

But if anyone is interested, let me know. I'll hook you up with the seller. Immaculate boat, the owner is a long time boater / hot rodder with an open checkbook mentality when it comes to building and maintaining stuff. Located in Chatsworth, CA
