I have a hankering all of a sudden for a BMW touring bike for the wife and I. I haven't been on a bike in 30 years when I had a 1990 CBR 1000 for a few years.Am I crazy?

I'm not looking to spend anything close to a fortune as we have the boat and a convertible for the Summer'ish season here as well, but it seems like it would be a good way to get my wife in some skin tight BMW leathers for my enjoyment. 🙂

Any good recommendations on particular models from the past 20'ish years to look for?

You're crazy, I would love to get on a bike. Always wanted a soft tail but I don't trust anyone out there, too many things to distract drivers now and they don't pay enough attention to the road.
I am committed to only travel on roads where no other traffic is present. 🤣

Before you get one on order, go down to a dealer and jump on one. They are nice bikes, but they have a distinct "feel". The bar/peg/seat relationship on any bike is a factor, but slightly compounded with the weight placement. To me, it felt like the difference between jumping on a GSXR, and a Katana.

Given, this was also 20 years ago. The purpose of any 2 wheeled device at the time was to see how fast it would go. Any talent I may have thought I had has since been "retired" due to a combination of funding, responsibility and common sense 🤪

My buddy has a Yamaha big DS ( not sure which model / similar to the bmw line) and they call it the Honey Moon Bike. They both really like it and they take the smaller roads gone for a weekend.

similar to the super tenere but I think it’s a 2018

Look at a used RT 1200 2015 and newer. It is a great bike for to up touring with cruise control, heated grips, heated seat, radio, power wind screen, and central locks so the side bags lock wit the key fob. Had one and it got 50 mpg, smooth, faster than you thin, and handled great.
Maybe hit the dealer they let you test ride and see if it fits.
Sold all of the bikes in 2020 when I had a near death experience.

What Kenboat said, I had a 2015 RT and loved it. Sold that and now have a 21 GS which I prefer over the RT. The 1600 is too big and the 1800 is cool loaded out but too slow for me.

I bought a K1600 and have taken it to Sturgis a couple of times. it handles way better than my Roadglide, its faster better brakes etc, i had a blast ridding it for a couple years but it just seemed that the Roadglide was my go to bike, ended up selling the BMW and keeping the Road glide
but the BMW K1600 is an awesome touring bike

R1200RT 2010 or newer, Price goes up with year. All of them will run to 100,000 miles.

be aware that they have "option" packages so make sure it has all the options you want.

Water cooling started in 2014, check out "bmwlt.com" for TONS of info and experience.

The large factory top box is an option. Heated seat is an option.... and a MUST if you ask me!
