I've heard that some are super loud, some aren't. What set-ups are more recreational freindly (quieter), what set-ups are more "race" or louder. What kind of hp can different set-ups handle? Pros and cons?

I think I'd be comparing a boat like the Kelegians which is more of a family cruiser to a full race open floor boat.

I'm not opposed to either type, but I've been told my wife isn't going to like wearing ear plugs, lol.

Twin turbo setup = quiet. Thru transoms = quiet. Zoomies = no wife riding. Dry headers = no wife riding.

Not the exhaust, the drive train. The actual vdrive itself.

I think there all kind of loud....i have ridden in 3 schiada v drives and it was beyond noticeable. Not bad enough to stop the wife from riding. All 3 boats had full interiors and floors

I just rebuilt the one in the picture, it is like a Rolex compared to a Timex. It has heavy duty gears which are thicker than standard gears which helps. The quietest cases are the C-500's, rubber mounted and very thick, 2" or 21/2" gears but are a pain to change gears in.

I have the heavy duty gears in my 21" Howard, I don't know if its the HD gears or I just happened to hit the set up correctly, but I don't hear the v-drive at all. Its a split case and its covered by the floor, sort of.

Most older v-drive units run "straight cut gears" in them. they are known to whine, howl, and make several other noises. The v-drive units in newer wakeboard boats like mastercraft and sanger have "helical cut gears" and are much quieter if not near silent against tho engine noise.
Normally I would say call Andy Casale, But his wife just passed. Jim Wilkes at Wilkes Marine has tons of info that will more than likely help you. He may even have the parts you need in stock.

Casale V-drives are all Helical cut gears, But you get into the big 6 pitch tooth heavy race gears and i don't care what kind of case you have, it's gonna make gear noise, there's a shit load of energy being pushed through the faces of those gear teeth, they are gonna make noise.

The exhaust is usually way louder than the gears, you can dynomat the floors and put a heavy pile carpet to lessen the noise as well.

I'm a bit confused. I would think the heavy duty gears would have a lower helix angle to reduce thrust loads, and produce more noise. They are actually quieter?
