So with the 330 being completely closed, and the 18 is closed from Big Bear Dam to Skyforest, if this pushes at the 38 and causes it to close, the Big Bear community will be left with only one road out, the 18 to Lucerne.

Went to Rancho Cucamonga Costco about and hour ago. Wind was really kicking up near the foothills. Lot of smoke and ash. Not a good situation I’m sure for firefighters.

You also have the 138 and 173

Big Bear can’t get to the 138 if the 18 is closed going south. The 138 isn’t conducive to a high speed escape route.

Arrowhead and Crestline can use it currently.

The 173 was allowed to self destruct. Last I heard it’s a poorly maintained road. For a highway off a mountain I’m amazed someone made that decision.

I’d hope if we really had to get off this hill they let both up and down lanes of the 18 be downhill lanes. Best way off.

If one of these is coming at you, GTF out of the way!

That house was owned by a firefighter who I worked with at OCFA, he’s the one who took the video.
Was asked to take a look at the pool and pool equipment to see what it would take to get it back into running condition because it also took a direct hit.
He gave me a walk through the house and it was incredible the amount of damage that the one drop did, it actually moved the house off of its foundation.
The back of the house had a patio cover that was completely removed from the house and deposited into a canyon the complete opposite side of the house.
He tells a great story of how the whole thing unfolded prior to the air drop and afterwards.
A CALFIRE rig was on his side yard when it happened and they had to find a secure/safe place to to ride out the air drop.
These are a few of the pictures I took during the walk through.

So of the mountain communities, RS and Arrow Bear are the only two that are mandatory evacuation, Arrowhead, Cedar Glen, Twin Peaks, Crestline and VOE are all still Evac Warning.

The two most recent areas to go to mandatory Evacuation are Forest Falls and Mountain Home. Both are over by the 38.

I’m in Big Bear City. I figure if Big Bear has to evacuate we are headed down 2N02 instead of the 18. 2N02 has been recently graded so my stock 4x4 truck should have no problems. The plan is to tow the Jeep behind the van and tow the off road trailer with the truck.
I doubt we’ll have to evacuate but if we do and the 18’s a shit show (it will be) that’s the plan.

I’ve seen numerous fire retardant drops my entire life. This is the first time I’d seen this kind of interior damage. Is it common?

With any high clearance vehicle 3N14 out of Fawnskin to Apple Valley is a good choice.

The only containment so far is how much water they can drop on the active spots. Checking all the fire cameras, there’s smouldering everywhere.

No idea why they aren’t dropping phoscheck lines that I can see anyway. Maybe the terrain isn’t conducive for it.

Fire plane support crew buddies say the containment numbers get skewed in order to que up federal funding. Sound true?
I mean, if you said the fire was 50% contained, would you still need 100% of the support staff or 50%?

Edit: I’ve been on the same piece of dirt for 5 shifts (10 days) doing absolutely nothing before, all because they hold crews and resources “just incase”

I’d love some Santa Ana’s at this point, blow all this damn smoke out to the ocean. At least if they can get this fire out first.

Yeah I don’t know what’s going on. The fire has made little to no progress on the western flank that’s threatening Arrowhead and others on this side. So if it’s out, drop the warning.

It seems to be heading east or southeast and yet they throw an evac warning for Big Bear which is well the hell back and north east.

Anyone have a clue?

And then they essentially just closed everything to residents only for the highways that are still open. I understand they don’t want more people up here but that makes it hard for residents commuting to work.

half assed educated guess is they are worried about the wind causing spotting towards Big Bear

Been on lots of type 1 strike teams and this is the first time I’ve seen this type of interior damage throughout the house.
The CALFIRE crew pinned themselves against the house during the drop so not to be thrown into other objects.

There could be changes/potential changes coming up in the weather patterns, it's supposed to start cooling off and historically that might bring a change in wind direction that they want to get a jump on.

Yeah there was video somewhere of a bunch of Dozers heading down the ridge from Rimforest, the old oxen/wagon trail. Today. The video said there was no immediate danger, they are just trying to get resources into the area to deal with the fire line and this was one of those ways.

Not sure if they are planning fire breaks or back burns or what. But they wouldn’t be putting dozers in danger of an active fire line that would overtake them.
