I was there helping when he was born, and picked him out that night. I visited him 2-3 times a week until he could come home. He was 11 1/2 years old. Every dog I have ever had has been a good dog...But Jax was the best dog I have ever had by far.

I noticed a couple months ago that he a had blood coming from his mouth, so I took him to the Vet. It had a big growth on the roof of his mouth (Canine Melanoma). The vet said there is nothing that could be done due to his age. She gave me an anti inflammatory and said he will either stop eating eventually, or the cancer will spread. Enjoy your time with him.

He has been eating his meals in 90 seconds flat, like he always has. Late Saturday night, I noticed he had a hard time getting comfortable. Sunday morning, he wouldn't eat his breakfast. I gave him a treat and he spit it out. He finally ate his breakfast about 11am (he is normally jonesing for breakfast at 5:30 or 6am). That was his last meal. He laid around much of the day. I slept downstairs with him last night, and he was awake every time I checked on him.

Today, he couldn't hardly walk as he had no balance. I called the Vet when they opened, and took him in to be put down this afternoon. The whole family went, since he couldn't really walk we carried him in on his bed. He got to cross over with his whole family there, and laying on his bed.

It is so weird that he was 100% normal on Saturday, then off on Sunday, then almost comatose today.

Anyways, goodbye Jax (his A.K.A.'s were Old Foot, Country Biscuit, Gangster Dog, Ranger, and Buddy.). Thanks for being such a great dog, and easy dog to train, for being a companion to the family, and looking after the family when I was gone. You will be missed.

Sorry for your loss. You know you both gave all your love to each other unconditionally. Nothing greater than having and giving that with your dog.

Almost identical to how my Lab Passed.
You guys did it 100% right, as tough as it was, and be comforted that he didn't suffer.
He was blessed to have such a great family.
RIP Jax.

Pets, dogs especially, enrich our lives tremendously. It hurts when we lose them, but the joy they bring us cannot be measured.
Sorry you lost your dog, you were lucky to have him and he was lucky to have you.

My brother just lost his lab this last Tuesday at about 15 years old.

It’s not the first we’ve lost and won’t be the last, but their love and devotion back to us can’t be matched.

Sorry to hear about yours. It’s even tougher this time of year when you gather with family and friends and your one family member / best friend isn’t there. Raise a glass to all of them gone too soon.

What a beautiful yellow lab. Jax looked like the best boy! Yellow labs always steal my heart as my best boy, hunter, was a yellow lab. Just the best dogs.

I’m so sorry for your loss. I’m sure he was comforted with the family being there with him and he’s running around now.

Loved your story and sorry for your loss. We have a black lab, Kona who is close to the same fate. Not looking forward to it as she is the last of 3 generations my wife bred and we raised. We kept one of each litter so it will be tough. Hang in there, each day will hopefully get better.

I have shared many storys of my female black lab name Nelly on RDP.
Labs have such a high desire to please their owners, they practically train themselves.

Sorry to hear of your loss..

Suxs balls…

Have a extra bourbon tonight.

Sorry for the loss to your family.
I can't help but think that your last night he was checking on you, more than you on him.

They can have more of a bond than we give them credit for. My Mom's sharpei was blind, and mostly deaf, yet was at my Mom's side through treatments and late nights. She knew Mom was ill, but stayed at her side. Mom worried her old blind dog would cause her to trip, but always stayed clear. The day after Mom's services, "Ginger" laid down and went to sleep. She knew Mom wasn't coming home, and I think she figured her work was done. We were always so amazed at how active that dog was, even at 15 years. She was there to watch my Mom:confused:

Sorry for your loss. That was a tough read, I could imagine what you were feeling, and brings back feelings of losing a few of my pups. They just don't live long enough. As was mentioned, she, and you were both lucky to have one another.

Sad to read Scott. You can't beat the unconditional love our dogs give us & the comfort they provide. I honestly can say I shed more tears with the passing of my past two dogs than either of my parents(who I loved dearly of course). I dread the day our current pup reaches her final days.
Condolences to you and the Mrs.🥺🥺

I can completely relate, having gone through a very similar scenario with our black lab two years ago. I miss him every day, but with a smile on my face.

Enjoy your memories of him, you two were great for each other.

Sorry about your loss Scott. Having gone through this I know how much it hurts. I also know that they are in a better place with no pain and waiting for us when it is our time.

Sorry for your loss. Got a call at 10:00 last night from our vet back in California. Told us our female has malignant melanoma. She is going for surgery when we get home next week and then some treatment at the specialty vet. Sucks when they get sick.
