RVs vs Hotels

We don't use an rv enough to buy one buy when the girls get older we may change that, I'll just rent one until then.

My story of rv vs hotel is as follows:

A couple if years ago we went to the street outlaw races a few hours away. We got 2 hotel rooms for weekend and it was 800 ish bucks. We ate waffle house, McDonald's 24 hour menu, and expensive ass fried track food. We drank 10 dollar beers and had a cocktail or two.

Last year I got a track spot and rented a 42 foot 5th wheel I had delivered on site. All in it was 1100 bucks. We ate steaks and shrimp all weekend, drank crown and fine wine. And when they had a wreck and shut down for a 2 hours went and took a nap. The last morning we got up and left.

All that to say in the modern era I'm very pro just renting an rv. With the internet it's basically an on site hotel room for a bit more cost.

We have owned class A motorhomes since 1979. There is seldom a month we are not using somewhere; be that motorcycling, boating, towing our 4x4s or just camping. Our boys learned so much about this country from our travels and each has a trailer. We have been in all 49 states we can drive to, plus Mexico and Canada. We much prefer the motorhome to moteling.

We plan to go to Alaska again next year and the following year visiting our California friends who have left the state.

We go once a year bring our bikes and usually bar hop and take kids to balboa fun zone. That’s it. Newport dunes is just an excuse to go local as I’m 45 mins away. So we shouldn’t anticipate a RDP rv trip to there?

We did the Dunes once, it was nice. Obviously I'm not gonna swim in that bay. But we walked around the park, took our bikes for rides and did some day trips here and there. A day trip from the high desert doesn't leave much time to do anything and we were wiped out by the time we got home. We ate at some cool places that were too far from home to do on a whim and not good enough to make a special trip for. Are there other places on the coast that are nicer? Hell yeah. It was a different trip. And for us, that's what the whole deal is about, variety.

My brother and a friend thought it was the shit. I’m with you on that though.

But one trip we met my brother down there he had a little rubber boat with a trolling motor we we took off with a full cooler and fishing poles

We definitely had a good time on the water lol we booze cruised lights out somehow made it back. Evaded by going under a bridge and all.

Only time I ever been there to camp. Besides that not much rather rent a house on the island. But then again my day there was the warehouse and woodys

Something to remember for the hotel stays is most hotels have washers and dryers. I pack 3 days worth of clothes and will wash them at the hotel on long trips.

I built out my hippy van about 5 years ago, water, power, heat, queen size bed up top and a twin on the bottom for the kiddo. There is no better platform that will cover ground quickly and give you the freedom to stay wherever you want. That being said my girls are like fuck you and fuck your hippy van bullshit after two nights, we better end up some place nice with a spa tub in the room

I usually take off in the fall and head up the coast to go surfing with the dog, I’m good to go in that thing for a few weeks before I tap out.

It is an expensive, boring place. Boat trailer parking extremely limited. For anyones info there is a spit to the left out of the picture where you can park your boat trailer free. Never had any issues. No one wants to steal a salt water trailer.

The bar/restaurant is next to the launch ramp.
The campground is for people that just plain RV camp. Ride bikes go on walks. Decorate the golf cart for a parade.
Not for Boon Dockers desert and forest kinda people. Concrete campers mostly.

We had a slip I never mentioned for privacy about 200 yards away. The dealer we bought the boat from really hook us up deluxe.

Excellent, full hookups, secluded and very private and secure. I got it really cheap as long as the owner lady could rent it out when we weren't there. Our boat had full ducted central air conditioning & dehumidification for summers like this when its gets really hot and humid in the back bay. Used it all the time.

Alice has a cancer patient owned one of the gas docks and we got a HUGE discount.

The marina are the most fantastic people we've ever socialized with. Not really practical for RV boaters. the Launch ramps are great,, but ya pretty much have to pull the boat off the water every day and in a Newport's dunes RV situation it can be a hassle especially with the limited parking. People do it though.

Jeff and Angie did a thread a couple of years ago on their trip through Colorado, I'd recommend that itinerary. Plus Jeff knows where all the good hot springs are located where you can see old naked hippies... That story still cracks me up.

So I've had buses, and if you're looking at it from a financial point, hotels, dining out beats it every time, don't care where you're staying. Also tons more work and worry, but the experience is what you pay for. Up to you its value

Best friend has one of those, they go everywhere in that thing. His Wife loves to gamble and they are pretty well off, they do a lot of casinos in it, get lit sleep it off and drive home the next day, tons of weekend trips.

You saw some beautiful country on that route.

Our friends have 34 Tiffin and we met up with them in a few spots. I quickly realized my vision of adventure just ends up at night in an RV parking lot on top of other RVers and their black tank hoses.

The scene wasn't for me.

Last night I was finishing up the stucco patch. And this thread got me thinking and i pulled

out my tape measure. Tore out the Chimney. If I tear out the planter on the left. I can park a 30' toyhauler or travel trailer and still have 3' to walk around one side. Or a 32' motorhome.

Seeing some of these RVs for sub 40k has my wheels turning. Obviously there’s maintenance and storage costs associated with an RV.

But do those of you who own RVs find yourself traveling more often? And are you traveling to more places since your house is on wheels?

Perfect scenario is that it’s my wife’s birthday this coming week and we were discussing weekend getaway ideas. I’d love to do Havasu (already have a house and pool waiting) but my wife wants to do Mammoth or Rincon. That’s $3-500 a night in a hotel plus eating out. I won’t mention fuel since the RV will blow that out of the water lol.

Seems like you could do the same trip in an RV for $1,000?

Obviously you can plan every vacation a year in advance and save thousands on hotel costs. This more about deciding to go somewhere inside of 2 weeks.

The cost trade off could be close depending on your set up. If you have room to store it for free at home and can pay cash and you only monthly cost is insurance then an RV does not cost you anything if you dont use it. If you finance it and have to pay storage then it cost you monthly weather you use it or not.

A lot of cons staying at hotels, there nasty, even the nice ones. All smell like bleach and your hoping the sheets are clean. Eating out every meal. Coffee is a disaster. $4 for a bottle of water. Hopefully they have a good restaurant in it to grab food. Hopefully the mattress is comfortable. Some check ins late afternoon. Check out is early and you usually to expensive to pay for an extra night so you can enjoy the day. If you wake up earlier then your wife you would need to go down to the lobby. Besides a deck of cards and a tv any entertainment has to be outside of your room. Someone has definitely used the towel as a wipe off rag.

There are some cons with an rv. Loading the RV for a good trip can be a big chore, especially if you don’t have room to store the rv at your house. Unloading is a chore and it needs to be cleaned. If your in havasu during the summer hopefully your ac can keep up. You have maintenance. It takes you a lot longer to get there and home. If you always go to the same area you can find a local storage but that has some cons as well. Youll spend a great deal at the store making sure you have all that you think youll want. If your in a motorhome its a pain to launch a boat and once you get the motorhome set up you have no transportation. If you have a truck and trailer then you must store the boat where you plan to boat. Youll need a 3/4 ton truck if you want to get an rv of any decent size.

Some of it depends on how much extra time and freedom you have. Do you have enough free time to load up for s trip and clean out the rv when you get home? Fix the little things that break on the rv? If you do then I say its worth it.

A lot of pros for an rv, you can take it anywhere and be confident you have your own stuff, a clean and comfortable place to stay. Convenience of having all the stuff you like in your own kitchen. Check in is earlier and cheaper to pay an extra night to leave when you want. You can have a nice set up of tools. Plenty of options to bring outside games, bikes ect. You can lock all your stuff in the rv bens vs hoping its not stolen out if the back of the truck. You can get rv parking at events and have a great tailgating experience.

All depends if the convenience is worth the work for you.

I travel for business every week staying in hotels. Living out of a suitcase sucks donkey dicks and not my idea of a vacation.

When I get home I want to go & camp. The smell when I’m cooking bacon on the BlackStone in camp with a bad ass view is amazing. I’m not calling room service for extra towels or extra pillows. My clothes aren’t suitcase wrinkled and I’m not tipping the guy that brings my car around from Valet.

To each is own but camping, to me, is always an adventure. I’ll never not have an RV.

Hotels and RVs are not even remotely close to the same type of trips for us. We enjoy both and have made fond memories with each. One of our favorite hotel trips was at the Riverside Casino when the kids where young. We had what now seems like a dozen families on an extended weekend trip to Lake Mojave. We seemed to have taken over a whole floor. It was so much fun wheeling 30 packs of beer in on a dolly and kids running down the hallway between rooms.

In contrast the same group with RVs circled in the desert and the kids are running around like banshees in the desert, group cooking and campfires also brings equally great memories.

Now that the kids are grown and it is just the two of us, we split between RVs and Hotels, each offers a unique experience.

We are planning our next build, it will be a truck based camper.

I live out of hotels for work, for me travelling in the RV feels like I am at home, I have my clothes, I have whatever I want to eat or drink. I have patio chairs or a bike to explore. Hotels I have to go find food, pack the least amount possible and just doesnt feel like home.

We have always had RVs of every type. The Early 2000's Diesel Pushers are a bargain. This year we bought a 2004 Holiday Rambler (Monaco) from a retiree in Havasu. It spent its whole life parked inside a garage and had every tank of fuel and every maintenance documented. He was asking $35K and also threw in about $5K worth of flat towing equipment- Tow bar, brake unit, wiring, car covers. I didnt even try to haggle him. That being said I have room for everything inside and underneath to feel like home.

I agree with this. I don't care for RV resorts. That is not camping, I would rather stay at a nice resort and leave the RV at home.

We love that area. It was on our short list of places to move to. We stayed across the street from the Durango hot springs for a month. Cortez for 3 weeks. We had spent 1 night in Telluride, 1 night in Ouray, and 1 night in Durango for a long weekend about 7-8 years ago and wanted to go back and explore. Summer of '22 we had 7 weeks in the area and really had an exceptional time. The people are great (aside from Telluride), great live music in a lot of bars, took the train from Durango to Silverton, did some epic off-roading up Imogene Pass area, just a great, great trip.

I actually just took delivery of my new trailer. I ended having this one custom built. It's a 8.5x24 with 7.5' ceiling to fit a rock crawler if needed. Has drop queen, drop dinette and drop couch to sleep 6 if needed. I didn't like the idea of the built quality of a standard hauler. We did steel framing at 24", one piece aluminum roof, 1/4 interior walls, double insulation and .040 exterior. I get it's more of a car trailer with living quarters but I have 19'9" or cargo space and can use it as vehicle storage when not using it as a rv

Going from California to staying in Tropic, Page, Sedona, Phoenix in one trip is lugging it around. We travel in pickup trucks and most the large luggage rides in the bed... It rains every time we're in the Northeast Arizona/Southwest Utah area. Doing laundry while hoteling it isn't that bad. Grab some beers and enjoy having clean clothes and not having to lug around a bunch of luggage. I pack all my stuff in a Jansport backpack. It's simple.

I've got an 8 foot bed and sometimes I wonder if it will be enough. By the second child she had it down to a short bed. I'm not kidding when I say she requires as much planning as moving a platoon. But like you, I unload and load all that crap. Someday my son will help. Until then I just hope my back can keep up.

Nothing feels better than home after being in an RV for a few days. Solid concrete floors, wide hallways, roomy walk around beds with side tables, extra bathrooms etc…

For those reasons we have gone the AirBNB and hotels now. Especially since it’s just 2 of us.

We save money on food eating out what we need to eat instead of 4-500 dollars worth or food/booze for 3-4 days where half of it gets thrown out.

I've had my toy hauler for over 20 years now. When the kids were little, we used the living shit outta it!

Now that they are growed up? Couple times a year at best.

Some people confuse hotels that have room service, with places that don't.

This was view right out of my room last week. There were families with multiple rooms booked all around me. Kids were having a blast.

I'll take a resort/hotel every time these days.

We went there back in the late 80's camping with a jeep group. A the time I had a 9 1/2' Lance Camper on my 81 F-250. I towed my 68 Bronco all the way there for 7 days of exploring with the CA4WD association ( a few will remember them). We went all over Ouray, Durango/Silverton and Telluride. Beautiful area... Would love to get back there one day.

All this camping talk has given me the itch to take a break from working on the new house and sneak away for a trip with the roof top tent for a long weekend.

We bought a new 26' TT last year. and brought it out to Havasu this year June 1st. Were leaving it through September. Its definitely made it easier going back and forth from home for the weekend and probably have saved some money.. but not much compared to Hoteling it.

Next year were talking about leaving it in Havasu for April - June, and likely back out for September - October. I'm over the mid summer heat..

But convenience wise (once set up) it's worth it.

We've found a few places we like though. last year we went down to Sun Outdoors in Chula Vista (yeah I know). that place is amazing... its like a 5 star resort for RV's. Restaurant, Nice bar.. unreal resort sized pool. The place is only a couple years old and is beautiful. We already got a spot for next June.

Love th Moho for trips, enjoy a nice hotel every now and then also. Had this 2006 rig since new, one handed driving even in bad conditions, makes traveling very nice. Just got home from Williams, Durango, Winslow, Cottonwood, Williams then home. Great trip. Big storm rolled thru Friday afternoon.

We went there back in the late 80's camping with a jeep group. A the time I had a 9 1/2' Lance Camper on my 81 F-250. I towed my 68 Bronco all the way there for 7 days of exploring with the CA4WD association ( a few will remember them). We went all over Ouray, Durango/Silverton and Telluride. Beautiful area... Would love to get back there one day.

A very few of us were lucky enough to grow up there... Wouldn't trade that for the world. All that stuff was our backyard.

I think we can all agree that it all depends on where you are in your life. Most with younger families would get a greater expierenece out of an RV and the camping lifestyle. But the older we get and become empty nesters the more attractive other vacations become. It just all depends where you are in life.

We bought a new 26' TT last year. and brought it out to Havasu this year June 1st. Were leaving it through September. Its definitely made it easier going back and forth from home for the weekend and probably have saved some money.. but not much compared to Hoteling it.

Next year were talking about leaving it in Havasu for April - June, and likely back out for September - October. I'm over the mid summer heat..

But convenience wise (once set up) it's worth it.

We've found a few places we like though. last year we went down to Sun Outdoors in Chula Vista (yeah I know). that place is amazing... its like a 5 star resort for RV's. Restaurant, Nice bar.. unreal resort sized pool. The place is only a couple years old and is beautiful. We already got a spot for next June. The more I fly for work, the less I want to fly for vacation.
I will take an RV vacation over a flight and hotel/resort.
My wife’s cooking is worth it

I agree I fly all over for work and stay in plenty of hotels. I’m kind of over hotels at the moment
