Seems like a thing from the past, you just don’t hear about it. Back n the 60’s 70’s it was a thing and even before that. Me and my buddies would go every weekend, it was a good place to meet chicks. It all started in our basement, dad said show me you are capable. My mom had an old pair. I strapped them on every day after school. A bit of a learning curve at first, but I had it down in no time. I was skating backwards and doing 360’s, I got this and he was impressed. Now off to the skating rink, rented my first pair. I was not use to the open space I now have, couple weekends pass and I had it down. It was a lot of fun and miss it some days.😎

Those were great days. Like summer camp away from parents and girls around to have fun with. It was a great opportunity to hone your skills at both skating and dating. LOL Couples skate was a great time to find a girl and go out skating. Then you has fast skating as well. Good times for sure!!!

It seems to be gaining some popularity lately. I have a friend who's family used to own skateland in Northridge until it was sold and closed down last year (or maybe in '22? Not too sure). She posts a lot of skate stuff and I have noticed more and more skating stuff around. It looks like the roller hockey rink in Burbank does something semi-regularly for skating also.

I remember going to California skate on Magnolia ave in riverside ca back in the mid 70's, on Sunday nights it was 18 and over, being pretty close to castle park, it was a great place to try meet girls, the after hours parties were also pretty good, great times for sure, I miss those simpler times.

… I was a devotee of The Rollercade on Hart Strest just east of Lankershim in North Hollywood …right next to the Custom Wax… car wax building… This was in the mid to late 50s …The Rollercade was a huge Quansett Hut type building… that is still there…
… In the late 80s and 90s a friend of mines father owned the building and stored aircraft parts in it… My friend said the hardwood skating floor was still there… No clue what the building is used for today🤷🏽‍♀️

My parents met while at the skating rink in Glendale I think. I grew up skating.
When Cal Skate opened in Chico I went a lot. Like alot a lot.

I started working there as a skate guard my sophomore year in high school. It was like
Ass soup! I speed skated, played a little hockey, and just had a blast. Our gang would travel to other rinks a lot and have fun.

I worked at a rink while in HS and college. Have skated since I was very young and still do occasionally. I still have the "quads" I built in college. The local rink does "adult night" on Thursday evenings, but they don't play the shuffle/jam music I grew up skating to. It's all slow R&B type crap that keeps the tempo low. I can usually get them to play "Egypt, Egypt" or "Play At Your Own Risk" once a night, but if they had a full playlist of that stuff, I'd be there more often. $10 with skates or $12 without (needing rentals) and it's not as busy as I wish it were.

My parents met at "Roller City", spring of 1963. Mexican guy from Bassett on a date with one of Mom's friends from Glendora. Pops ended up hooking up with a different white girl from Glendora, and they got married a year or so later.

I'd never heard that story till after Pops passed. One night, talking with Mom, found out that stuff.

I believe my parents met at Roller City too. Dad was from Azusa, Mom from Glendora. Had to be around the same time frame. I came along in 1966.

Fuck yeah! I was a total rink rat. Skating plus in Ventura. From the time I was in 4th grade through high school and then started up again in my early 20’s at adult night. There was a time in jr high I’d be there for Friday night skate, Saturday day skate and stay through sat night skate and then Sunday day skate every weekend.

Some Great music. Look
Out weekend, Egypt, when I hear music, were some of my “gotta get on the floor” jams to rock the flea hop. lol.

Take the kids now every now and again. They enjoy it. I’ve had a few pairs of speed skates over the years. Still have a set of quads.

😁 my 15 year old wears them when he goes now.

When we all go people trip out when I get out there fat old white dude doing a little freestyle. 😂😂 skate guard kids are like WTF?!

Sounds like we need a So Cal RDP Skate Night! 😃

I was on the Cal Skate Grand Terrace Speed Team in the mid 80s. Roller City 2001 in Riverside & Stardust in San Bernardino were our rivals. Lots of good memories! Yes, I can still hold my own. 😃

I had a pair of the metal skates! It’s amazing I survived skating the streets in those😂. Roller skated at Pickwick & pretty sure Roller City was still around in early 70’s. I remember skating there after we moved to La Verne in ‘68.

As a kid, Ya we skated.
I remember having birthday parties at Skateland in Whittier. I've been a few times as an adult, but at this point if I broke a hip they would have to shoot me.

LoL, Rink. We would skate to the beach from Hawthorne, the last hill on Rosecrans down to El Porto, if you weren't going backwards, you weren't stopping.

Lol, this is awesome. I skated from 7 thru high school. Was pretty serious with it and got into speed skating early and did it until inlines came outl . Was ranked #2 in the nation for my division at one point and #1 in mix relay. Some of the guys I skated against made the Olympic ice speed skating team even. Dressed up for Halloween one year in my old uniform from Cerritos Skate Station from when I was around 13. Won best costume at Monster Bash with it. Still have my skates to this day. lol

As a kid, my neighbor and best friend's parents owned 2 skating rinks, so we got to go for free all the time(they had owned 4 at one time). We did thanksgiving at one of their rinks every year with all their extended families. It was awesome having full run of the snack bar and the arcade. We would play hockey, and sometimes drive go karts on the rink. It was an incredible time.

I have a set of quads from 35 years ago. and still have a set of inlines. Skating plus in Ventura was where we skated. Adult skate was Thursday and Sunday nights. no little kids buzzing through your legs. Afraid to put them on now.

I learned on the metal clamp-on skates and rented the urethane ones at the rink. I was pretty good! About 10 years ago we took the kids to a skate rink. Let's just say that it is NOT like riding a bike! I was a wreck, a danger to myself and others!🤣

I've got a whole "Jam" playlist for all the good skate music. You almost never hear it these days. Shuffle skating is a non-starter here...they look at me like I'm an alien.

Looks like Labeda Proline plates and Riedell 595 speed boots. I'm in a Riedell 395 (same boot but with lace covers), WIP plates, quick flip axles and Cannibal wheels. I did add a 3/8" heel to the boots, which gives a little more drive off the corners when speed skating. ;)

We had a roller rink not too far away. Hung there a bit as a kid. My old dad impressed me one evening as he rolled backwards around the rink. I was floored. I never got very good. JB in SoCal is obvi much better. ;)

There's a crew here that rolls around the beach boardwalks in Pacific Beach. They plop down an old school ghetto blaster and put on a show. Fun to watch.

I’ve been skating by my whole life. Ahh the clamp on skates would ruin a good pair of shoes in no time. Had a pair of rubber tired skate as a kid until I took them apart and made a skateboard. Damn things hit rock and stopped on a dime.

Damn, good eye! 😂 kinda bummed because the bouts are a bit tight now. Always consider buying new bouts and re mounting but I don’t go enough now a days.

You have a nice set up! Always like a nice pair of speed skates. I always took pride in mine. Polished them each week. 😁

Don't break a hip!
Yeah man l. Shes a trip. It has definitely been a concern.

Wife would be on the phone with her, and she would be skating around her house.

I know she was still skating a couple years ago. I'll have to ask if she's still doing it.

It looks like she has a lot of fun doing it!

That’s quite a shiner on her left thigh😳
She loves it.

That bruise is from blowing a turn on a pre-fab pump track learning how to pump. More my fault than hers, oops.

The bruises she gets from derby are often finger/hand prints.
