I am redoing a large patio awning cover. Keeping the posts , but replacing all the 2x6 and 2x4. Any suggestions on protecting the wood. I bought basic HD wood but think the rest of the project I might stick to treated wood. Painting it white, end result.

Prime and paint all the wood before you install it and then hit all the cut ends as you cut to length and install.

Looks like you are too far into this project. But for those that plan on this, and have a very tight budget, I will sell you individual 2" X 2" square tubes, 10' and 20', powder coated. Just use a bracket to attach, never paint again and NO termites. We will have an off white color, plus 5 others. Banner ad up soon, open by second week of June ,fully stocked by late June. Bets way of course is to do entire Pergola in aluminum, never paint again, NO termites, etc.

A moisture test of the wood would b best to see how absorvtive it is then coat with boiled linseed oil until it stops sucking it up, wipe off excess then let dry for a couple days. Coat/treat all raw surfaces b4 assembly. Then a good primer coat with kills 2 or zinser primer as mentioned and then a hi quality exterior grade top/finish coat. Doing it to stand the test of takes time but will last so much longer.

Ganahl sells a wood product called Windsor one. It will by far out perform any other wood providing endgrain is sealed right. It comes pre primed. A little spendy but worth it for your own shit! Boatpi offer would be a step up from that though!

Go to Amazon and look for a product called Bora-care ot will help resist fungus which turn into dry rot and helps resist termites mix according to the label spray on with a sprayer primer all 6 sides. Paint with a good quality paint it will last a long time. I tell you this as a professional pest control inspector if you have any questions PM me

I’ve used that on a man cave. Better then copper-green, it’s bleeding thru the primer.

Copper green is crap it stinks and paint won't cover that up! I have walked onto property's and can smell it even after years of being treated. Bora-care has no smell just don't get it on your grass or plants it will kill them it is a herbicide as well as a termitaside. That's why it will kill fungas as well as termites

That’s how I was taught by my dad. He was a master at building patio covers.

On my house I went with alumawood. As I didn’t want to mess with wood.

what are your expectations for performance? How long do you expect it to realistically last (in actual years 5,10,15,20?) to feel like you received an acceptable return on your time and $$$ investment? To keep it pristine you will have some maintenance along the way regardless of what you do to paint it. It's going to move from wind, expand and contract from hot/cold temps., swell from rain/moisture and shrink from heat. Nails are going to loosen, rise, rust etc. and lap joints are going to open. Screws hold longer and stronger than nails over time. Caulking is your best friend here. Some pieces are going to twist, some will rot of Poria Incrasada, an inherent wood fungus, and if you have too much moisture in the material when you paint it it will rot from that too. (talk to the termite guy here) I believe 14% moisture is preferred max moisture content to help insure material stays straight, doesn't moisture rot after painting and absorbs, seals and bonds with coatings best. If you have wet material from selection return it and find the driest, straightest material you can find to start out with for the best opportunity for a good looking, long lasting finished product. Boiled linseed oil as a pre-prime sealer is the next best thing to resin coating the wood. Talk to a retired union painter (old school) and ask him about it. (house painting forums?) Zinsser is a good product, 2 coats primer, 2 coats finish. (consult their tech line/ dept.) Paint build thickness provides protection.
