Any of you have any tips for removing this old paper gasket on my dad's motorcycle? It is coming off in chunks like this. Want to avoid a razor blade because of aluminum cases.

Drill mounted nylon wheel. Like a wire wheel just less abrasive due to it being nylon strands

If you do the scotchbrite route, be careful - that green (or red) fiber dust is very abrasive and if it makes its way into your crank case / crank case oil that is no bueno! Id stuff some rags into the cavity, damp to attract that dust and keep it out of the engine. There are some TSB's about this happening with dealers doing warranty work and using scotchbrite to clean block surfaces

Brand new razor blades are your best bet. Use lots of them and keep them at a shallow angle to the case.

Soaking with carb cleaner, as posted above, works better than brake clean. BC evaporates too quickly to soak in. The other thing is dab with paint stripper, and let it sit for a few minutes. Nylon or teflon decal scrapers work good.

Personally I would not use anything sharp or abrasive as that is soft aluminum on those covers and cases.

You mainly want to break down the gasket sealer, or more simply the glue, and then the paper will come right off.

All the chemicals mentioned have merit but I have never had much luck with Gasket Remover on stuff that has been on for a long time and I use xylene or toluene which are better chemicals for melting glues and melting epoxies. You can buy it at the hardware store.

If you want to use a scraper, use a plastic scraper.

Plastic razor blade could work too- and be less likely to damage the surface
