Stopped by Stancraft this summer while I was touring the Pacific North West. It was super shitty everywhere and no one should ever go there, save your time and money and stay away, just terrible. A couple of my buddies from highschool moved up to Idaho and have been trying to get me up there for 20 years. They got hall passes and I decided to rent a motor home so we could cruise around and check stuff out. They sat in the back and got fucked up for a week and I drove about 1500 miles through Oregon, Washington and Idaho.

Up there they don’t even know about all the cool fiberglass boats that look like disco balls, poor bastards are still making them out of wood.

This is get your checkbook out and hold on territory. Going down the wooden boat worm hole is not for the faint of heart. That being said, if you have the money, Stancraft has the time. It’s a full service company, from design and build to maintenance, storage, launch, retrieval and jet center located across the street in case you’re on that page.

Everything is done in-house, you start by sitting down with a designer and tell him what you want, then he draws up some renderings.

After you approve the rendering and finalize all the details, that drawing makes it way out to the wood shop and the boys start building the keel and bulkhead ribs.

Next phase is to flip it over and apply all the hull material and build the deck.

All the bright work and interior is done onsite, I’d guess the facility sits on 10 acres with multiple buildings

Here is a rendering of a disco boat/wood boat. Cool to look at but total exercise in futility due to weight issues. You would 6000 HP to get it to lift LOL

Paul had a badass DCB back in the day with twin Ilmors, unmistakable sound that thing made running up to foxs for breakfast one morning. Been a fan of that platform ever since.

I’ve thought about building myself a wood boat, but don’t think I would use it after a while as I lose interest in toys and then put them on the shelf. I prefer to buy used stuff that has already depreciated then send it down the road when I get bored with it and not take a bath

Whiteworks, The numerous Chris Crafts my dad owned when I was growing up sanding the damned things every winter --- all had double plank mahogany bottoms --- the inner planks running at a 45 degree angle to the longitudinal ones. The view of the stern of the Stancraft seems to show only single longitudinal bottom planks ---- did you happen to see any at that stage with the bottoms being planked ?

the ones I saw in production all had single plank and it appeared to be about 1” thick. Big lumber, big everything. It’s all the same thing I do on my surfboards but my stuff is tiny in comparison.

Beautiful boats but yeah, any wooden boat should be double diagonal planked. Old friend had a 72' WWII minesweeper that had triple diagonal mahogany planking. The deck was teak and held down by 3000 screws

Enough wood and spirit to look awesome at 60 miles an hour on the water and 85 miles an hour when getting towed down the highway on its trailer. We love how Don Don balances its just-under-30-foot length with a hefty 8’8” beam that frames and blends its classic heritage and modern dimensions. Just count the ideas designer Michel Berryer blends into this tiny package: a sense of running at blistering speed; the sweeping, art-deco flowing line; AND the luxury details in leather and stainless steel of classic cars. Where’s the wheel? Why, on the left side. Like in a car. Face it: If you’d known as a teenager you could have showed up to the prom in Don Don, you never would have bothered to learn to drive. This Don would have made all your dreams come true.

Now that’s some serious shit right there, the thing that caught my attention was that it’s all from the same log. I’m not sure how many board feet it takes to build that, but it’s heart and that was big fucking log. By doing that the builder has achieved something very cool as far as consistency of lumber goes. That’s high grade fine furniture type stuff right there, except it’s a boat LOL.

I could dive into a project like that, but the economics of it are what I’d consider to be a loser. I’d imagine there is minimum 5000 man hours into that build, most likely more by a lot. That’s a two year build if I’m by myself and have no labor costs

I built this board for Bildos mom, the design ques are from the Riva Aquarama and ChrisCrafts of the 50’s and 60’s. The lumber on this board is pretty unique, it’s old growth redwood, and yellow Alaskan cedar.

The redwood tree was about 800 years old when it came down in a windstorm on private property, that’s how is was able to be harvested. My buddy owns a mill and worked a trade to mill the lumber for some of the heart. It was 5 semi trips to bring the log up to the mill. This stuff is up to 30 grains per inch. It’s never been anything but a tree before it’s current life as a surfboard. Getting virgin old growth like this is pretty much unobtanium and a non renewable resource as far as humans go. There are over 300’ of glued seems on this board It’s one of my favorites I’ve built to date. And yes she surfs it, because Bildos mom is badass and doesn’t live in a museum

I saw that one in person, or maybe it was another and they made a few. It was cool, but it wasn’t for me. It just seemed confused in its purpose, I guess if you had cubic dollars and we’re really into wakeboarding it would be okay. I’ll bet someone could pick it up cheap all things considered. Nice boat, but not my style.

Friend here where I live has a rare wood boat built by the Dodge Brothers back in 1923. It's a 23' Dodge Watercar. It has a Chryler Hemi V-8 [ original engines were smaller ] it rips pretty good. Restoration was six figure and insured by Hagerty accordingly.
