anybody out there have any experience with the raylar 525 kit for a 496HO. i've looked into the procharger and don't think it's a fit for me and i found the kit which will add about 100 hp. not sure if it's worth 8k or should i just can it and cough up more money and start from scratch? decisions decisions

If it were me, I'd sell the 496, take the proceed from that and add it to the $$ you'd spend on the Raylar kit and do a from scratch build. Get solid quotes up front and in writing for x HP for x $$$ and then start talking to people who have used the services of the builder you're interested in. Right off the bat I'd recommend Dave at DNE Motorsports in Costa Mesa as I think you'd be hard pressed to find a local builder that can do a better N/A build for a jet boat. I have one of his engines and am 110% happy with it. Outside of that, you might want to check with Barry/Obnoxious here on the boards. All of his customers seem to be happy, and he might be more budget friendly than DNE (just speculation on that part though).

Regardless of who you pick, it's still going to come back to you determining how fast you want to go, and then talking to John at Ultra and other owners of your your hull(check with RandyH here on the boards) to see what kind of hp/mph ratios they are seeing to estimate the hp you'll want to build for at a specific rpm. If you don't do your homework on the amount of hp and pump setup required to meet a specific goal, it will be hard to measure the success of yor upgrade

Chris,

thanks for the input. in the back of my mind i really think that is the best option as well. i guess i'll run it how it is this summer and begin my new power search right away so i can get something started when it's not river season. thanks again

Start your search while you're running your boat now. I don't know about now, but my DNE build took a while; partially beacause I stalled on parts selection, but also because he was busy, and having custom pistons, camshafts, and cylinder head CNC work adds to the total build time. On the bright side, that also allows to "pay as you go" by buying the various custom parts as the build progresses. If you're starting from scratch, an 800+hp single carb, pimp gas deal is totally doable. Bear in mind that you should factor new headers into whatever build you select, so budget accordingly.

Good luck,
Chris
