Had a client reach out with a request to build her some raised planter boxes specifics for. Her needs, low working height (she’s short) sized to fit next to her house, and large enough to actually grow enough stuff for her to consume. I knocked out three so far, she ordered four and a work bench. Once I get the fourth box built I will design and build a roubust lattice and attach it to the boxes.

these things are built to last and will provide her years of service. Nothing crazy on the lumber, just construction grade redwood, but I went through a lift and cherry picked the best pieces. There is often a bit of FAS that slips through the grading process on these lifts the big box retailers get, you just have to dig through and they get pissy about opening new bundles LOL

material on this type of project are $350-$400 a box including soil, close to $100. In dirt if you get the commercially available good stuff the weed guys use😂

kinda cool deal, nothing crazy.

Is she lining the inside with plastic to protect the wood?

Those are sweet looking, I hope she gets a lot of good use out of them.

I made these for my brother, like 6/7 years ago. 4x12’s resawn set on 4x6’s we placed a SS fine wire mesh between 4x6 and 4x12
ask what she plans to grow, lets say she grows tomatoes the stalk might be to tall for her to reach if the tomatoes plants grow 2-3 feet tall.
she might need a one low for taller veggies when fully grown.

Stupid question here....I have nothing but concrete and a pool in my backyard, so planter boxes would be ideal. Do they require drainage or do you line the box with plastic and some gravel? I’d rather not have dirty water draining on the ground if possible.

I tried that once then I ended up shoveling. I'm sure yours are much better.

These will have 2” of gravel in the bottom and 3/8” drain holes spread around. You need drainage.

Worked out a trellis design I like that will support some heavy vegetation for years. Decided on some basic joinery where the vertical and horizontal pieces intersect and then milled a radius edge on everything to soften it up. Should look very nice once it’s sanded out and has some finish applied.

quoted pricing on two other boxes today, apparently it’s popular to be a Pinterest gardner these days and you need to look the part 🤦‍♂️

What's the floor made out of, looks like a sheet in the picture.
What supports structure did you do under the floor. ( Can you show a picture)

Looks Great!

Wanted to build it now, but may want to move it after harvest as it is right on the street. That seemed like the best placement for protection from a typical so Cal summer. It is supposed to be essentially self-watering and good for healthy plants.
Perforated irrigation pipes across the bottom after lining it with pond liner. You can see the overflow pipe stategically placed to maintain a layer of air between roots and standing water . 16-18" is the perfect depth for adult plants and they will naturally wick up the water as needed. Never get over watered.
Squirrels and rabbits ate the herbs first night so the wire cage was an afterthought. Held on by a few zip ties so I can remove it easily for maintenance.
Ugly but it will grow some awesome salsa and squash. Lattice for tomatoes is next week's project.

Had some time to mess around in the shop today and build the 5th piece of the redwood garden set. This potting station turned out pretty cool, has a tools storage area, a grid to shake out the dirt from root bound plants while transplanting and a soil catch bucket under it, little upper work shelf and a storage shelf below. Simple and robust design with a clean esthetic, I think I might make some more of this stuff 😂

Here is a photo of the interior, it’s has cleats around the perimeter that are glued, screwed , and stapled. Wood glue is amazingly strong, with a proper wood glue joint, the wood around it will fail before glue does. You could park a truck in these LOL

I put a few photos of this stuff up on some local community social media pages, got lit up hard, quoted pricing to 20 people in a matter of hours. Same old shit, everyone wants cool shit but doesn’t want to pay for it LOL.

I quoted $1000.00 a box, finished, deliverd and filled with soil to anyone that asked. There is about $300.00 in materials into these and about 15 hours a piece when you keep track of all the time, picking up material, processing material, applying finish, picking up soil, delivering boxes, setting everything up. It all adds up, Moral of the story all that cool Pinterest shit chicks dig costs money and right now there are a bunch of dudes in my town who are gonna wish they just wrote the check when their wives hit them up for a grand tonight instead of being cheap and saying I can build that LOL

I know of three for sure whos wives are gonna make them build them some shit now😂😂😂

Delivered and installed everything today, leveled the planters, 2” of rock in the bottom then topped off with soil. Client was super stoked and it made my day to see her so excited.
