Mead, Powell, etc having major water level issues, so why not Havasu? What has Havasu figured out that the other haven't?

I have been told that the design of the Parker dam is such that if the water level drops more than a certain amount (plus or minus 8-9 feet I think) and they are unable to generate electricity......I think this was part of the original design thinking that the upriver water supplies (Powell, Mead and Mohave) could compensate to ensure that Havasu would be able to support this requirement.....at least that's what I've been told though I can't swear to it ;)

I was told something along those same lines by some havasu old timers. Those pumps run 24/7 and love water.

The first "to" is used as a preposition, the second "to" is replacing "also". Carry on.

So if I am describing the water level of Mohave and I think that the water level is higher than it should be, I use the sentence, "Lake Mohave is too full" and that is correct. That is the point I was making.......I would not substitute "also" with "too"...that is incorrect.

Carry on.

Sorry to get all "Froggystyle", but, "too" can be used to describe something in excess or replace also. So, why is Havasu full too?

I just returned from Powell and it is not very low. It is only 88' down from the top of the dam.

Because Havasu is a source for CA drinking water and agriculture.

http://www.havasunews.com/news/because-you-asked-why-is-the-level-of-lake-havasu/article_76bedec0-05d0-11e5-b15c-3f81dd6feaa4.html

It?s one thing when tourists take note of the high level of water on the lake but you know it?s unusual when locals are taking note. Or maybe not.

If you?ve been playing on the water for years, then you would know the water is always highest in May and low during the winter.

But with that said, if you pay attention to detail well, the water is in fact a little higher this May than the average May. So whether you know Lake Havasu or not, you?d be right to say the tide is high.

Several readers have asked about the water being unusually high and want to know what?s going on.

Well it?s only six inches higher than the average 449 feet above sea level during May, but according to Lake Havasu City?s Water Resources Coordinator Doyle Wilson, just half a foot can look high on the shoreline.

When it?s cooler in Havasu, half a foot can expose a lot more beach, Wilson said.

So we?ve established that the lake is in fact high right now but let?s talk about why.

Wilson said during the summer farmers in southern California require more water down river and the demand affects Lake Havasu.

More water is released from Lake Mead to supply the demand as California has the largest entitlements to these lakes, and Lake Havasu, along with Lake Mohave, serves as a balancing pond.

But while we?re high, Lake Mead continues to get lower, Wilson said, moving toward historic territory.

He said if Lake Mead is predicted to reach below 1,075 feet above sea level, it?s likely the Bureau of Reclamation will declare a water shortage for 2016.

What I've always understood is that the maintenance of Havasu water levels is not so much to accommodate the dam and power gen but more an issue with the MWD (California Aqueduct Pump House) and Central Arizona Project (Phoenix Aqueduct Pump Station) Specifically how it pertains to Aqueduct pump lift abilities. I think the feeding of those pumps is why we get to enjoy stable water levels. We're very fortunate.

Lake Havasu is where both Az. and Ca. draw water for their aqueducts. The level needs to be pretty constant because of the design of the intake pumping plant at the south end of the lake.

I always thought that because Powell and Mead were reservoirs they would go up and down according to rain fall. But Mohave and Havasu aren't.

Power generation and down river agriculture ... once water leaves Parker Dam, it's doesn't stop till the border ...

Question, why does Havasu have water?

Because air boats don't work like their name implies they do.

Powell and Mead are the major reservoirs for water storage, Havasu and Mojave are more about supplying water/electricity than storing it. They are much shallower and smaller lakes.

On September 18th I am anticipating getting a notice to proceed for design and build of a very custom test pump. If the test is successful we will manufacture and install 33 more units.

These pumping units will work in conjunction with the tunnel that was posted about earlier here in August. IPS3 will have the ability to lower Mead to a small river.

It would appear that way, but the media will never tell us that...........it is drought related.

Powell is down ~90 feet. You have to hike your ass off to get to Rainbow Bridge right now. When the lake is up you can boat right up to where you can see it.

We have had shitty snow pack for the last 7-8 years on this side of the rockies.

It's storage for CAP and the water you drink in LA. AZ has rights to that water.

I've read that when Mead gets below 1075' for a certain length of time then all the water rights go out the window.

The Good news, with all the Monsoon flow it appears that Havasu isnt in a drought. :)

In a nut shell the Colorado River levels are regulated based On the Colorado River Compact of 1922. The Compact has been modified over the years and in fact was not ratified by many of the states until years later. Both Powell and Mead are considered storage basins which can be lowered or raised and Mohave and Havasu are feeder lakes and must be maintained within a certain range.
If your are really interested here are some interesting links:

I just returned from Powell and it is not very low. It is only 88' down from the top of the dam.

Been going to powell for almost 30 years and have seen it full. Also seen it lower than current actually down to 3585 for our summer trips.Head to cathedral in the desert when the water level is at the 3695 and lower if you really want to see the beauty of it lower the better for there.

I can say that there are far more beaches when its lower too but most seem to just think its too low to bother going which is fine also :D Next year if the water comes up with all the rain expected finding a weed free beach is gonna be a real pain in the ass since it has been low for awhile. Our 2011 trip was the highest i seen it in years and lone rock had very little sand spots most was already in the weeds we got lucky we had 4wd.Next summer may be higher.
