So that's where that idea/method came from, interesting. I heard a story about a small co. That did that for years (1960/70's etc.) with the oils from their equip maint program. They leased a smaller section of land with a couple smaller buildings from a large parcel owner. The owner sold the parcel to a large R.E. developer for a track of homes. When they began excavating they discovered the oil in soil situation and had 1 hell of an unexpected cleanup expense to absorb. As you can imagine they were not pleased. Fortunately for them it was during a strong appreciation run in the market and were ok in the end. I never heard if any litigations ensued after the fact.
Funny the "smart" things people used to do way back then vs now.

worked at a local gas station in the 50s, when the oil drain container filled up just took it around the side and dumped it on the ground, could also tell you some horror stories about how they disposed of oils en paint and other toxic waste at a metal stamping plant I worked at in the 60s

My ex father in law worked for property disposal at an Army base. They would open the large transformers filled with PCB oil and pour it in their yard to keep the dust down.

Growing up, we had oil seep to the surface of our street In the summer.

yep, me too. Many, many moons ago I had a 1968 chevy 1/2 ton truck w/inline 6 cyl. Burned 3 qts. of oil w/ea. tank full. I just kept a case in the truck w/me at all times it went so quick. I did a rafting trip up on the trinity river w/it. I took 3 cases to insure I'd have it covered. I ruined more white t-shirts w/ exh. soot just brushing up against that damn truck fueling it or whatever. It ran good, just burned oil. ...... good times haha

D-40 works well 4 hand clnr too. Good 4 paints removal.

There was a machine shop in El Monte, been there forever. It's last big jobs were pneumatic manifolds and stuff for nuclear subs. Really cool stuff.

When the old man was getting ready to close up for good, he was prepping the property to be sold. He had had the yard asphalted in the 80s, but he had it all pulled up. The rebar and concrete for the yard was epic, like a bunker. Well, except for one area. That area was dug out maybe 20ft deep, and clean fill put in.

When the environmental testing was done, they broke something, and had to reset. As luck would have it, they just happened to punch down in that clean fill.

That man was a genius! The beautiful new concrete, and all it's steel work, was a fraction of what the hazmat bill would have been.

Met my wife at Industry Hills...a pool and golf course built on a dump. BKK was all the news in the 90s though, "toxic runoff"...funny thing is, the money homes go for there on the hill now. I remember talking to my old boss, when his son paid a mil for a house in Anaheim Hills. Same thing, but a dump from the 50s!

The Stude used about a quart a week, and they cost 25¢. I never changed the oil, it was being replaced every month.

My Old man had a 53 Study business coupe 3 on the tree , smoked like a house on fire He bought "Speedall" ("reclaimed oil") at the super market for the same reason

The Navy used to test torpedo propulsion up in Azusa canyon. The toxic crap coming down was still pretty bad in the early 90s. Last time I was out there it surprised me to see how many new homes were in the same area.

Makes the Copenhagen taste a little different for sure though.
