Changing it up this year, heading to Fort Myers.

Never gone the resort path.... Usually do an AB&B in the Keys so this will be a big change for us.

Staying at the Pink Shell Beach Resort and we'll explore the local sights and activities from there. Although I understand they offer a lot of activities there at the resort.

Any suggestions for the local scene?

The resort and immediate area survived Helene but forecast claims they may be in for more in the next few weeks...

FWIW, I just happened to be in the area a couple of weeks ago and FT. Myers is still a mess from Ian 2 years ago. Construction everywhere and most places still closed or just rubble. I bet it will be 5 years minimum before any sense of normalcy returns. This was before Helene. KW will be your best bet IMHO.

I dont think that is true. I drove through the area this past winter. It looked like a nuke was dropped on the entire place. We drove by this hotel, it was obviously still there but certainly had damage.

We stayed in some place in Ft Meyers, went all up and down the beach to bars and restaurants. That area is a shit hole. Our hotel looked great online, it was worse than the Motel 6 in Needles. Like drug infested and full of homeless. 🤷🏼‍♂️ Wisky Tango comes to mind. Naples is like Scottsdale compared to Ft Meyers. I think we stayed at a JW Marriott, or something similar down there. Day and night difference. Maybe your experience will be better? I personally wouldn’t go to FT Meyers beach ever again. My wife used to teach at a studio a couple weeks a year in Naples 4/5 years in a row so we ended up spending some time down there.

Ya, Ft Meyers is pretty much whiskey tango.

Have you stayed at this place? Are you taking kids?
no... first time. no kids... Never been this side of the gulf....Heard a lot about how nice the beaches are in this area... My great neice recently moved to Cape Coral. Says they survived Helene with no real damage ....

We've never been into the inclusive resort vibe.. we're more into exploring the area, finding local ma-pa food joints and places of interest. etc....

Looking at a map, we're in the Fort Myers Beach area....

Damn.... Right.. doesn't sound like the Keys..... Maybe we'll be spending more time at the resort than planned..:(

Got it. I thought this hotel was geared towards kids, or at least families... I had a friend who was to get married there before Hurricane Ian. I was scratching my head as to why they selected this hotel. The hurricane came along and well the plans changed. I'm not sure I'd call it a resort? A beach hotel is more what I'd call it. Maybe it's changed since it reopened.

In that area, Sanibel is the place you'd want to go. I haven't been since Ian though, so I couldn't tell you what it looks like today. Further north is Siesta Key which has the most beautiful white sand beaches anywhere in the world. You should make the drive up there just to check it out. Since Helene went through, it could have changed a bit.

Growing up, we spent most of our time either in Siesta Key or down in Chokoloskee fishing the Everglades. If you're up for an adventure, hire a guide for the day and go down and chase some snook and redfish in the mangroves. If you enjoy fishing and want to be in a place that feels like another world, check it out. You could also drive down and just check out the Seminole Indian history in that area. Hit up the old store and the Rod and Gun Club along the Barron River. There are a few restaurants and bars in Chokoloskee/Everglades City, but not much else. I like those places because that's how Florida USED to be before the concrete jungle took over.

You should go somewhere else until Ft Myers is rebuilt. My brothers are there every week and say it is a long way from being ready for tourist.

Run a little further south (45 mins) and hit Naples, mostly goto Marco Island, bunch on nice places to eat on the water and some cool stuff to check out. I always recommend The Snook Inn. There's a little gimmicky shopping place in Naples called Tin City, but there's a great restaurant/bar right on the water as well.

I go every February, stay at friends house. My accommodations are great. It's not a shit hole, yes they lost some structures but it's fine. Plenty of good resturants and things to do. They have a speed boat that takes you down to KW. The Ford Edison museum is a pretty cool place to spend a few hours. Like I said it's not that bad and Im scheduled for Feburary visit that I look forward to. You'll have a good time.😎

FWIW………. Late October is still hurricane season.

You could stay somewhere around Ft Lauderdale and attend the boat show. It is the end of October.

If you could be more specific about what you would like to do, I might be able to make some recommendations.

Fantasy Fest in KW is in late October. You will need an open mind to truly enjoy this event. Lol

If you want an upscale getaway……….. The Ocean Reef Club, Key Largo.

If you want something a little exotic, and you have a passport, Grabbers Beach Bar and Resort, Great Guana Cay, The Abacos, Bahamas. It will take 2 planes and a boat ride to get here. Well worth the effort!

Well now you've gone and done it!! ❤️

The Abacos are my favorite!! The beaches of Treasure Cay are amazing, Grabbers on the beach, Green Turtle Cay.....

That entire area is STUNNING!

The crazy thing is it's only a 45 minute plane ride from Ft. Lauderdale! Now, with that being said, the price for airline tickets is absurd! LMAO!! It's the same price from LAX to Ft. Lauderdale as it is from Ft. Lauderdale to Treasure! 😲

FYI…….. Treasure Cay has been sold. The developer just announced the plans a few weeks ago. He finally cleared the obstacles set forth by the Bahamian Govt.

There is a very good chance that I will purchase a piece of property in the new development. My wife and I have been waiting to find out the future plans. We most likely will purchase a townhome, with docking, in Treasure Cay Marina.

That's been in the works for a few years if I remember correctly. I love Treasure Cay and would move there in a heartbeat if my wife wasn't so committed to the West Coast. Waking up and having fresh cinnamon rolls in the morning and lunch at "The Sands" would NEVER get old! ❤️

It will be nice once the area is rebuilt and infused with new money. My only fear is it will become less than affordable......

I have been following the guy below for updates. He has good info.

The video below was made a couple of weeks before the announcement, but it covers the current condition and future plans.

I can't tell you how many meals I've had at the Tipsy Seagull. Playing pool at the table that used to be there, swimming in the pool and enjoying the AMAZING sunsets with some mediocre pizza. 🤣

The Abacos is one of our favorite places……… And I’ve been to quite a few places! Lol

We spent a lot of time in Treasure Cay. Heck, we almost purchased a condo at The Bahama Beach Club, in 2019. Dorian hit, and ended that. (Plus I need docking too)

It appears that Treasure Cay is going to become a private club. I am guessing Chubb Cay and Bakers Bay would be a comparison of what Private means. We just know that when the new townhouses come up for sale, we want an end unit, overlooking the New Tipsy Seagull. Hopefully we can get 2 docks, by being an early bird buyer. I am going to need a golf cart garage too. Lol Don’t worry…….. I will rent it out when I am not using it. (Airbnb/vrbo)

For those of you that have not been to The Abacos, I highly suggest you find a way to explore this area of The Bahamas. You only need 3 things to make your 1 week stay a memorable one.

1. A place to stay. Pick the following, Green Turtle Cay, Great Guana Cay, Elbow Cay, or Marsh Harbor. Sure there are other islands, but the above mentioned will be best. Put MH at the bottom of the list.

2. Rent boat for 1 week. Hey….. this isn’t like the United States. The boat rentals are very reasonably priced. Go Explore

3. Rent Golf Cart for your entire stay. Multiple carts are even more fun.

Lastly…….. Don’t even think of going to the Abacos, without purchasing the book below. I purchase an updated current guide every time I go. This is your Abaco Bible…….. Take it with you everywhere you go. Tides, charts, reefs, snorkeling, fishing, everything!

Just as an FYI our property in Naples had a couple of feet of water in the house on Thursday. We are admittedly low lying on a canal but there was definitely hurricane damage from the storm surge.

Go to downtown Fort Myers, bunch of little bars and restaurants. Truthfully fort myers beach sucks, it is dark water and the sand is ok. Go out to Sanibel beach. Great shelling and the water is great. Nervous Nellie's, wahoo willies, Parrot key Caribbean grill good food. Can do the salty sams pirate cruise, then as said hit Tin City in Naples for a few restaurants there. McGregor Pizza & Deli is pretty good as well in fort myers. Realtor in and lived in the Cape, Fort Myers area last year.

I was there this past March and some parts still look like a war zone. Traffice on and off the island can be really bad depending on the time of day. I'm talking 45 minutes to move a mile. That being said, one of my favorite bars is right near there, Doc Fords Rum Bar. Good food, live music all the time. You are also close to another cool bar, Bimini Bait Shack next to the bridge to Sanibel. There is also Lighthouse Restaurant there also. The beach itself is beautiful and the sand is great.
