It's not a homeless problem it's a mental health and DRUG epidemic! Garceti's an idiot. Adding 2,000 more beds for homeless or adding 200,000 more beds for homeless aint gonna do SHIT to address the vagrancy issues. Whens the last time in any documentary, news article or any sort of coverage on "homelessness" have you heard someone being interviewed say, "there's just no programs to help us out"??? Think about it. You don't hear it because it's not those that desire help to get back on their feet you see in tent cities and shitting on the streets and shooting up throwing their needles all over. There's beds and assistance to those that seek it. Ample amount of help to get people that want it, back on their feet.

I'll start having faith that something may actually be done about this problem when I start hearing politicians refer to the problem for what it is - a drug and mental illness crisis!

This is the truth, housing crisis my ass, it’s a mental heath and dope issue all day everyday. Most of the residentially challenged that want help can get it. The ones doing stupid shit are wasted and don’t want anything but their next fix... Zombies, no consequences and nothing to loose.

Saw that on the local news last night. One business owner went as fare as putting a fence up.
Then Gridlock Garcetti tells the reporter that putting out obstacles is unlawful and there are other ways to deal with the homeless. Said there building shelter and homes for them, what a fukin idiot he is.

Look across the street to see why there's a fence.

Eric garcetti basically said go for it. Raised 1.5 billion to "help" them. California just stepped in and.gsvw 120 million to help.

And these homeless people don't want help. They want to live in a lawless society for free and do drugs as they please

And when that shit falls apart on top of somebody, somebody will get sued by some advocate for the homeless.

I don't know. The snowball affect of "enough is enough" is building. You see more and more documentaries like "Seattle is dying", articles and press coverage on the crisis and now you even have a large group of Angelinos that want to oust Garcetti specifically because of this issue. And then you even have Trump weighing in on the problem. The real issue is growing as more and more flood to the streets due to horrendous politics and decisions on laws - what should be enforced, what shouldn't...What case law says can be enforced and what can't...decriminalizing crime and drugs and theft...Calling addicts that steal, harass and promote a lack of quality of life for normal people, victims!! Democratic politics just throw money at it (you know, tax payer money...Our money) thinking it'll get resolved. "Build more housing"...For fucks sakes, this isn't a housing issue. People shooting up, shitting in the street, drinking until their clothes are falling off and they're lying in a pool of piss and shit and throw up on the sidewalk, stealing anything that isn't bolted down, harassing and disturbing aren't there because there's no homes to buy! They're not there because there's not a bed in some shelter. They're there because they're addicted to substances. They're there because they have pre-existing mental illnesses or drug induced mental illnesses. Just like that article @pronstar posted. You can't just throw money at it and "house" these people. Politicians are out of touch with reality.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. Easy fix to this but the politicians, and really many that aren't directly affected by it, don't have the stomach for it.

1) Accountability! - Hold thieves, addicts, criminals in general accountable for their actions! This could include diversion, counseling, treatment and then if they don't want to play, well then guess what? housing in way of steel bar hotel. This would also include repealing AB109 and making HUGE changes to prop 47 and 57. It would also include updating prop 36. Let me tell you, when criminals have "prop 36" tattoo'd on their knuckles, you know that shit aint working!

Like the program in "seattle is dying" outlined - assistance, intervention and treatment need to start inside jail and continue to the streets. I also believe that those that are given diversion, counseling, treatment instead of jail or are identified as narcotic addicts or frequent habitual offenders need case workers that will ensure they're following the guidelines. and again, if they don't? Back to jail.

2) More state hospitals and mental illness housing. Shed the 50's negative image of horrific mental hospitals and house people that can't care for themselves in facilities that will treat them decent and address their issues.

This is just a start. There are absolutely ways to address these issues but until those in charge identify this crisis for what it is and not sugar coat it as "homelessness", this issue is just going to grow rapidly and exponentially.

LOL, totally.

Again, it absolutely boggles my mind that voters and law makers want to outlaw plastic straws but think it's perfectly ok to give out needles to drug users. You know, PLASTIC syringes with those sharp sticky things on the end usually filled with disease and god knows what else. Seriously, what the actual fuck!?

That's pretty insensitive of you. You'll never understand what they go though on a daily basis.

For example, look at this guy. Poor dude was so tired from working an honest days wage, he ended up knocking out before being able to finish his ice cream which clearly ended up melting under the blistering sun.

Shame on you for judging them

I am pretty judgy....I need to look into addressing that. Thank you for showing me the error in my ways. I will give some money to the next tweeker, addict, vagrant, idiot asking for gas money or holding a sign "will work for food" (offer one a job of pulling your weeds or washing your truck and see the reactions btw) to make penance.

Vancouver and a few other cities here now, have safe injection sites. Drug users can do their street drugs at these centers under medical supervision. Police can't arrest drug users over a certain radius around the centers. The area these centers are at, are now major tent cities. Vancouver has the highest rate of property crime in North America (we even beat Mexican cities). The city has built several nice new homeless shelters. They give an emergency check when you arrive. They have brand new clothes and shoes they give out. They allow drinking in the shelters, so more people use them. It hasn't improved our skid row area. In fact now that neighboring Surrey has a drug injection site, that city has declined even further. The mayor is blaming the police. Policing there is under RCMP contract. The mayor is canceling the contract and creating their own police force. It won't fix it. Bring back the mental institutions they closed, instead of drug injection sites, might bring the city back to somewhat safe.

Depends on each individual case.

If you can see them breathing, call ambulance and monitor. We all have narcan now, it can help in some cases.
Can't "refuse", but also aren't required to be a paramedic on every case.
Reality is most Overdoses are called in to 911 before we encounter it anyways.

You guys know that Austin is the most fucked up city in Texas, right? Now it's worse. Two weeks ago the city council changed the law so camping or sleeping on public property (including sidewalks) is no longer illegal. Before this, the homeless were being harassed by The Man, and couldn't pay the civil fines for trespassing so they went to jail.

Now the cops have to ignore them, the DA dismisses almost all property crimes, and the judges have done away with bail.

So if you find any addicts that want to move to Texas, let them know. I'm sure this will turn out good.

The city of Austin followed the 9th Circuit Court of appeals ruling from last year that is already standing. 9th circuit does not cover Austin and Austin's decision was only a City Ordinance ruling, not state or federal law. Google Martin v Boise, case law passed last year for the district of the 9th circuit court of appeals, which is notoriously ultra liberal and comes down with the most ludicrous rulings and covers nine states — Alaska, Arizona, California, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Oregon and Washington — and two territories, Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands.

Basically the ruling says it's a violations of civil rights and inhumane to not allow someone to camp on public area's if there is no shelters / beds available. Due to the fact it's difficult to show if there is or is not beds available (and most times there's not, and it doesn't matter if there is (see above) ), the vast majority of cities, fearing suite, choose to view the ruling as the inability to enforce public camping. This ruling just made this epidemic worse ten fold. Except that on the flip side it's going to push this issue into the faces of those (average people) that normally wouldn't be affected. And then, maybe we'll see something done.

Our liberal courts ruled similar on camping in public places. My town, for a small town has a pretty large tent city. Criminal law in Canada is federal jurisdiction, so our federal prisons are filled with criminals that in the US would be in state prisons. A federal prison in Alberta is testing a safe drug injection site inside the prison. Rational is the prisoners are getting drugs inside the prison, might as well make it safe. So instead of people getting clean in jail, we are keeping them addicted. Not solving our "homeless" problem.

We have seen this issue fucking explode here in Visalia(central cal). Every city park has it. Fucking ridiculous. I get a " warning" for running my sprinklers(with water I PAY FOR) from the city, yet the urban campers have free reign.

No solution in sight without solving the drug epidemic, yet local governments resist or plainly ignore it. Housing these folks will do nothing unless they have drug access and that is stupid as hell....Sooooooo
